Question:
I have a 1989 Ford Country Squire LX and looking to pull a vintage travel trailer with it. The whole look thing. Anyway, it currently has the Curt class ii hitch on it. I need to go up to the class III. Also I want to add a brake controller to the car. I havent purchased a travel trailer yet, but know we want one between 16 and 24ft. So I will assume 4000 to 5500 loaded weight. Id love to add a weight distribution with anti sway also. Now I know nothing about pulling anything other than a utility trailer, so I need some help.

For a Class III trailer hitch for your 1989 Ford LTD Country Squire Wagon you can use Curt hitch # 13707. It is rated for 400 pounds tongue weight and 4,000 pounds gross trailer weight. When used with weight distribution it is rated for 600 pounds tongue weight and 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight. Towing a utility trailer is basically the same as towing a travel trailer in terms of equipment needed so I don't think you will have any problems.
However, you will be limited to the towing capacity of the vehicle if lower than what the hitch is rated for. Given the age of the vehicle I cannot look up the owner's manual online so please consult your owner's manual for the towing capacity of the vehicle. Whichever is lower, the hitch or the vehicle, is the capacity you will need to go by.
Since it sounds like you have been towing with the vehicle already you probably already have a 4-Way trailer connector. But if not you can use # 18252 to add one. Then to add a 7-Way connector and a brake controller you will need installation kit # ETBC7 and a brake controller. I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
Once you know the trailer you want to tow and the towing capacity of the vehicle I can recommend a weight distribution system with sway control for you.
