Where are Axle U-Bolts Measured From
Published 12/19/2016 >
Question:
How do you measure u bolts? Outside or inside the U? Also, this may not be your area of expertise but I will ask anyway. I had to buy a new axle for my 5x8 utility trailer. The spring centers are narrow so It had to be welded up for me. I told the company I wanted it underslung. Well it is overslung. When I mount it underslung the axle bow is at the bottom. Will this make any difference or hurt anything? Thank you for your help.

U-bolts like the 3 inch axle U-bolt part # SP01-060 are measured from the inside of the U. So it has 3 inches between the U.
Axles have a bow to them that has to always point down otherwise the wheels will be way out of alignment. You will need to have the spring seats of your axle removed and welded to the other side so that you can use it in the configuration you want and have the axle facing the correct direction.
