Can Additional Ground Wire Be Used On Peterson Round Trailer Tail Light

Published 11/16/2016

Question:

Looking at Product 431800 Petersen Round Tail Light. Im putting on a Kawasaki Mule that has 3 wire lights. One of these wires Im pretty sure is a ground. Doesnt have turn signals. With the 2 wire like the 431800 the ground is to the frame via the metal bracket that it attaches to. Could I also use the existing ground wire on mule and put a wire directly to the mounting bolt as a sort of secondary/backup ground? Thanks P.S. Ive tried using the bigger rectangular lights with 3 wires, but when I open the bed on the mule sometimes it over extends and I end up breaking the lenses. These smaller two wire round ones are just the right size for what I have. thanks

You can do just exactly what you said you want to do for a ground on your Mule.

The Peterson Light, part # 431800 is grounded through the mounting posts. You can run your ground wire and attach it to one of the mounting posts to make sure you get a good ground.

The brown wire on the light is used for running lights and the red wire is used for brake and turn signal. You could just tape off the red wire if you just want the running light function, or wire the red wire to the brake light wire you have on your Mule.
