Brake Controller Install Harness Recommendation and Location for 2000 Dodge Dakota

Updated 10/04/2016 | Published 10/03/2016

Question:

Hi on my 2000 dodge dakota I have the factory 7 way plug on the back but up under the dash I have no plug to plug in the controller. There is a blue wire zip tied around the clutch I figure this is the trailer brake controller wire. How would I hard wire a controller into my truck from this point? I would really appreciate any advice you can give me thank you for your time.

If you do have the factory 7-way on your 2000 Dodge Dakota the truck will have the correct plug under the dash for a brake controller. This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Sometimes we have seen the harness found on the right side of the steering column.

Normally this connector is blue and it is located in this area on all Dodge Dakota vehicles but is sometimes harder to see than others.

The harness to use is the part # 3020-P.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
