Can Larger Tires Than 4.80-12 Be Installed on Lifted 2001 Viking Saga 1906 Camper Trailer

Updated 06/02/2016 | Published 05/31/2016

Question:

I am wondering what size tire should I max out on for my viking 1906 camper trailer after getting a 4inch lift on it? Currently has the 4.80-12 tires, and am wondering if I should go to a 13inch or 14inch tire once its lifted...

Lifting a vehicle or trailer suspension can provide more ground clearance, which is sometimes helpful, but it also can lead to increased sway. Since the center-of-gravity is higher and the increased height means potentially more impact from wind and passing vehicles, you'll want to carefully consider this before making the change to the suspension of your Viking camper trailer. Contacting the manufacturer with your camper's VIN is a good idea.

Also keep in mind that to allow for normal suspension travel you need at least 3-inches of clearance between the top of the tire and the wheel well when the trailer is fully-loaded. You can measure the current tire clearance (with the trailer fully-loaded) to see how much space the lift will give you to allow use of a larger tire.

If you are having tire problems (early wear, frequent blowouts) then you may just need a higher load range tire in your current size. For example, if your current tires are Load Range B, like # AM10060 from Kenda, you could upgrade to a Load Range C tire like Kenda # AM10062 (rated for 990-lbs at 90-psi pressure) or Taskmaster # TTWSF48012C (rated for 900-lbs at 90-psi).

Also note that all trailer tires should always be fully inflated to their maximum psi pressure rating that is noted on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire.
