Needing Replacement Slipper Springs for Older Cox Boat Trailer

Published 04/15/2016

Question:

Hello, I have an old COX stell boat trailer that Id like to replace the axle, hubs, springs, and mount hardware. While researching springs, I do not see anything close to what I have on the trailer. The mount points on the trailer are 35 inches measured from the center of the through bolt to the center of the slip opening on the trailer itself. I realize I need to measure to the end of the slipper when the trailer is unloaded to get the correct spec. I still have the boat on it. Meanwhile, I thought Id look to see if I find anything close. The axle on it is 1.5 inches, measures 65 inches backing plate to backing plate and has spring centers at 53 inches. Hubs are 5 on 4 /12. The boat weighs 1300 lbs and the trailer is probably 700-800 ... Thanks for reading.

None of the slipper springs we offer meet the dimensions you provided. You'll probably need to get a set of springs of the proper capacity and relocate the spring hanger and slipper. Given your axle diameter, you most likely have have a 2000 lb axle.

For spring hangers, you'll want to use a front hanger that match the height of your existing spring hanger. I'll link you to our selection of slipper spring hangers.

As far as the axles go, unfortunately none of the off-the-shelf axles we offer have the dimensions you mentioned. Your best bet would be to order a custom axle. If you'd care to reply with your city, state and zip code, I'd be happy to locate somebody close by who could order an axle for you.

The hub needed would depend on the spindles that your replacement axle would use. Typically, a 2000 lb axle would use an # L44649 Inner and outer bearing, or a # L68149 inner and an # L44649 outer bearing or an # L44643 inner and outer bearing. I've linked you to our selection of 2000 lb rated trailer hubs with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.
