Question:

How do i know which my truck is? factory 4 or 7 way? I have a 2006 Ram 2500 and it has a Round plug for trailer connection in rear. I think it also has a flat plug underneath also. Thanks

If you look at the photo I've edited for you, you can see what a 7-way and a 4 pole trailer connector looks like. A 7-way will have a spring loaded cover that snaps down over the connector when it's not in use, to protect it from mud and crud.

I'm assuming you're wanting to know so you can install a brake controller. To determine if you can do a plug and play installation, take a look under the dash at the firewall. Look for a white plastic box bolted to the firewall behind the emergency brake pedal. If the truck is prewired for a brake controller, the blue brake controller connector will be next to or clipped to the top of the white plastic box as shown in the photo.

If the blue plug is present, you'd use the # 3020-P brake controller connector. Plug one end into the controller, the other end into the connector under the dash, fasten the controller to the underside of the dash, and the installation is complete. I'd recommend going with a proportional controller like the Tekonsha Primus # TK90160. A proportional controller can determine how quickly the tow vehicle is braking, and will send the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so the vehicle and trailer brake at the same rate. This leads to safer, more predictable braking.

From what you mentioned, it sounds like you have both plugs, which means the connector under the dash is likely present.
