Causes of Uneven Tire Wear on a Trailer
Updated 11/02/2015 | Published 11/01/2015 >
Question:
I have a 2005 Forrest River Wildwood tandem axle travel trailer 29 + 3 long. I purchased the unit used. I replaced all four tires this past spring 2015 and had wheel bearings repacked. I have noticed uneven tire wear on the passenger rear tire only. The tire wear is on the outer tread. It has worn down so quickly that I may have to replace it by next year. The tires have less than 1000 miles on them. I maintain the air pressure at 65 psi per manufactures recommendation. The other three tires are in excellent condition. I am also very cautious about loading the camper and weight distribution. Any suggestions as to were to begin trouble shooting?

Many things can cause uneven tire wear, including a bent axle, an overloaded trailer and worn or broken suspension components.
A trailer axle should be slightly arched, with the high spot in the center of the trailer and the spindles on either end being slightly lower. When the trailer is loaded the arch will flatten, placing the trailer tire treads in full contact with the road surface. A damaged or overloaded axle may place the inside edge of the tires in greater contact with the road, rather than the whole tread. A worn or damaged suspension component might cause the trailer to track incorrectly, which would also affect the alignment of the wheels and cause uneven wear.
