Brake Controller and Trailer Hitch Recommendations for 2012 Volvo XC90

Published 10/03/2015

Question:

I need to install or have it installed, trailer hitch and receiver on my 2012 Volvo XC90. I have a small 5x8 cargo trailer that came with a plug in. What about brake control? is it something I can install easily or should I have a qualified shop do it. I do not have a shop.

The Curt Class III trailer hitch, part # 13559 would be an excellent choice. The hitch installation is pretty simple. If you view the attached installation instructions, you can decide if the installation is something you'd feel comfortable attempting yourself. You'll also need a ball mount like part # 2923 and a trailer ball like part # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch ball or # 63845 for a 2 inch.

If the trailer has brakes, and you want them to actuate, you'll need to install a brake controller. I'd recommend a proportional type controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. A proporational controller can sense how quickly the tow vehicle is braking, and will send the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so the trailer and the vehicle brake at the same rate. This leads to safer, more predictable braking compared to the older time-delay controllers.

To install the controller, you'll need our brake controller installation kit, part # ETBC7 and a functional 4-pole trailer connector, part # 118411. Once you have the 4-pole and the brake controller, the install kit provides everything you'll need to complete the installation. I've linked you to instructions for the install kit, as well as to install videos for the brake controller and the 4-pole connector. I've also linked some FAQ articles that you'll find helpful. Like the hitch, you can view the install video and figure out if this is something you want to do yourself, or have a mechanic handle it.
