Lock Seized Up on Diversi-Tech Self-Locking, Adjustable, Aluminum Ball Mount

Updated 05/28/2015 | Published 05/27/2015

Question:

Ive had your trailer hitch for almost a year and a half now. Havent had to remove the hitch from my truck until recently, and it seems the locking mechanism may be defective. The key for the shank locking mechanism wont turn to activate the locking pins. My husband was able to remove the lock cylinder using an Allen wrench and then he was able to use a flathead screw driver to turn the locking mechanism thus activating the locking pins. Have you had this type of problem with this hitch? Other than this issue, I have been extremely happy with hitch!! Its very sturdy and it has weathered so well that it still looks brand new

When not in use you should remove the Self-Locking, Adjustable, Aluminum Ball Mount # DTALBM7025-3S, because the locking mechanism can seize up. This is a common issue with any lock that is exposed to the elements long enough.

It doesn't sound like anything is damaged so lubricating the mechanism and then locking and unlocking the unit several times might be all you need to do to get it back to good working order.

You could use a spray lubricant and let it soak as a first step but then I recommend flushing out any remaining spray lubricant and using white lithium grease, which is available in a spray form if you just want to skip directly to it, and then lock and unlock it several times.
