Question:

I know nothing about this stuff. Will one ball mount suffice for a 2008 Subaru outback wagon trailer hitch or do I need 2?Thanks.

On how many ball mounts you need, if you have more than one trailer and they have different size couplers (1-7/8 inch and 2 inch) and you want a ball mount for each one, then two different ball mounts would work.

If you didn't want two ball mounts, another option would be to use the Convert-A-Ball Interchangeable Set with 1-7/8 inch, 2 inch Hitch Balls - Chrome, #901b, which would allow you to attach a post to one ball mount and then just change the hitch ball to whatever size you would need.

If you are just towing one trailer then one ball mount would work fine, you would just want to make sure you choose the right weight capacity for what you will be towing.

On your 2008 Subaru Outback Wagon, you will want to check the owners manual or the car dealer to find out the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. You will never want to exceed the manufacturers maximum towing capacity.

Ball mounts for your 2008 Subaru Outback will come in three different choices depending on what size hitch you have on your vehicle.

The first choice is for the Class I 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver opening, for that size you could use the Draw-Tite Ball Mounts, # 3593, which has a gross towing weight of 2,000 lbs.

The second choice is for the Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver opening, which you could use the Draw-Tite Ball Mounts, # 36053, it has a gross towing weight of 3,500 lbs.

The third choice is for the Class III 2 inch hitch receiver opening, and you could use the Draw-Tite Ball Mount, # 2923, and that has a gross towing weight of 6,000 lbs.

You would also need a hitch ball for the ball mount. The size of the hitch ball will depend on what size the coupler is on the trailer you will be towing.

If it is a 1-7/8 inch coupler then the hitch ball you need would be Tow Ready Hitch Ball with 1-7/8 inch Diameter and Short Shank, # 19256. If it is a 2 inch coupler then the hitch ball is the Tow Ready Hitch Ball with 2 inch Diameter and Short Shank, # 19258. Both of these hitch balls will work on either the Class I or Class II ball mount.

On the Class III ball mount you would use a Tow Ready Hitch Ball with 2 inch Diameter and Medium Shank, 6,000 lbs, # 19247.

I am sending a couple of links that will help explain ball mounts and hitch balls.
