Spring came out of bulldog coupler hitch. I did get another spring but it does not stay in. What am I doing wrong?

I don't think you are doing anything wrong necessarily. There are 2 possible issues that I can think of causing the problem. First, the spring may not be the correct size. A spring that is too short and/or not the correct diameter would fall out.
Second, if the spring is not seated in the detents inside the coupler then it could work itself out.
Also you will need to make sure that the hinged part of the coupler does not come all the way out of the collar. It is not supposed to swing all the way open.
