With a conventional electric brake controller, hauling a fifth-wheel trailer with a semi or truck that has exhaust brakes can be a challenge. Whenever you're going down a long downgrade and you engage your exhaust brakes, the brake controller could turn on too. If that happens, all the way down that long hill, the trailer brakes will stay engaged and potentially overheat. This will wear down your brakes a lot faster. You'll have the same problem if you put your hazard lights on, with the brakes pulsing with each blink. You could really dig into your wiring and do some splicing to fix this problem. Or you could get the Hayes air-actuated brake controller and have smooth, flawless braking with a controller made for air brakes.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Hayes air-actuated brake controller gives you proportional braking for the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

This air-activated controller ties into your vehicle's air brakes to sense exactly how much pressure you are applying to the brakes. It then sends a signal to the trailer to apply the brakes with a matching amount of force. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your air-brake-equipped semi or truck. This air-actuated trailer brake controller senses the amount of pressure you apply to your vehicle's air brakes and applies the trailer brakes proportionally.

Works as intended. But this controller could use a limiting function so the user can set the maximum gain on the trailer brakes. The unit will always go to 12 volts and will lock the trailer brakes while braking firmly. The brakes on the attached trailer can skid while the air brake system is under high application, especially while the air pressure needs to build in the towing rig's brake chambers for a moment. I found myself holding back the attached lever with my hand during sudden or hard braking. Yes, I have turned the handle clockwise with no desired type of response. In fact, while the handle is turned the other way to increase braking sensitivity, it triggers the braking system to turn on without even applying any brake pressure. Is it possible the device is malfunctioning from the factory and is triggering too quickly, hence no decrease in electric braking power on the minimum setting of the knob? Maybe there is something we can do to try eliminating the ill response of the brake controller. I certainly did not like skidding the trailer behind me while in traffic!

I reached out to Hayes about the issues that you are having with the controller. They advised that the only way of adjusting the controller is by turning the handle. Otherwise, they also recommended to have the controller replaced. I can send the warranty details to you if you want.

by:

I had some technical questions about this controller, and the staff at etrailer is more helpful and diligent about answering my questions than the manufacture was. The staff at etrailer product support is very helpful.

by:

This product did what I needed it to do. The only thing I do not like about it is no one could tell me how to adjust the pressure. So I would say that the tech people need to know more about this product.

So the pressure on this brake controller isnt adjustable but the RATE the pressure is applied is adjustable. If you want to increase the rate at which the trailer brakes are applied, you will turn the knob counterclockwise, and the decrease the rate brakes are applied, you turn it clockwise. Once you find the rate that feels comfortable for your set up, the brake controller will hold to that adjustment until you change it. Does that make sense?

by:

GREAT PRODUCT, installs with less air lines and electric wiring

by:

Do not buy this controller! It is an absolute joke.

Per e-scammers product description the light is supposed to change as you adjust the power. Below is the response from Hayes:

Hi Justin,

The light is just an on/off indicator light. It does not change intensity with the output.
The nob only reduces the maximum output by about 3 to 4 volts when turned all the way in the other direction.

Hayes Tech Support

.

When you adjust the knob there is no positive feeling of adjustment, it just feels like the knob itself is threading off. When I first installed it worked well until it burned up the brakes on my big Tex trailer.

Know when you purchase this etrailer will take your hard earned money. When you have a problem they will not give you the time of day and refer you to Hayes. Hayes is no help as shown above.

This is false advertising by etrailer and is not right. I strongly advise you think twice before installing this on such a huge investment.

I really hate to hear about what happened to your brakes using this controller. I did reach out to Hayes to confirm that the light does not change in intensity when power is applied. [Even though it still states this in their updated manual]. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

INSTALL OF HAYS AIR ACTUATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER PART NUMBER 100400C
ON A 2018 FRIEGHTLINER CASCADIA WITH A 45 FOOT GOOSE NECK

Well, my first attempt to put an electric brake controller on my 2018 Frieghtliner cascadia was complete failur. I used an agility brake controller first when it was complete it kept flashing 10 when the brakes were applied, do your self a favor and waist of money don’t try to install one of the brake controller you get at advance or O’riellys they wont work on a 2018 but will work on 2006 Frieghtliner but here’s the thing i suggest going to extra mile and buying this hay’s air brake over electric and over electric over hydronic which’s is what im using with my 2018 Frieghtliner after dragging this trailer around for at 6 months not relaxing the brakes wasn’t working on the trailer.
Fast forward to Monday 10-10-22 i called and ordered this air brake over electric part number 100400c had the mechanic do install for me ooooooooooooh sweet sweet music to hear that break away brake system fire up and apply the brakes for the first time in a 6 months was bliss.
Ordered 10-10-22 received 10-14-22 package was damaged and wet BUT WAS NO FUALT OF ETRAILER’S damaged in transit by usps, all parts was still in box went to install it.

On my install we hooked all wires accordingly like the instructions says to son the air connection part we cut a corner, on the install the instruction says to use a dual check valve to install the air line we only counted to the mail supply air line tested for air when applying the brakes got the correct line put a t connecter inline connected the 1.4 inch air hose ran through body hole connected to the hays controller tested the brakes and then the music started playing.

BOTTOM LINE IS YOU CANT GO WRONG IF YOUR TOW UNIT IS AIR EQUIPPED AND YOUR TRAILER IS ELECTRIC OR ELECTRIC OVER HYDRAULIC

by:

Definitely a great product! Easy installation and great instructions! I use my semi to pull my camper occasionally and this box works great for the electric brakes on the camper from the air brakes on my truck.

by:

We have electric to hydraulic trailer brakes and struggled with the top of line proportional electric brake controllers. With Hayes air to electric the trailer brake controller application is consistent and very effective. I have the Hayes in two of my Freightliner M2-112s and love them.

Have found no issue, and recommend this product for air to electric or air to electric overhydraulic system. My power unit is heavy enough that I hardly need trailer brakes, I have them set to come on mildly on the trailer. This unit makes my tractortrailer unit legal for highway use.

the information provided with the is stall is very veg they could have told you where
to get a check valve they could have showed you in detail how and where to hook
into the air valve , what lines to hook into , or offed a video on how to install
for what it cost it is a rip off, you need to let hays know this for future sales

This is a pretty specialized piece of equipment whose install procedure will vary according to the vehicle it is installed in. At this time, we have not had the opportunity to install one, which is why we do not have a video to provide.

The P3 also offers a clearer LED display on the unit itself so it's more user-friendly during actual operation as well.
