Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Capacity of Trailer Axle that Measures 1-3/4 inches in Diameter
Based on the diameter of your axle you most likely have a 2,000 lb axle capacity. So 4,000 lb since it's a tandem axle trailer. Upgrading to a 13 inch wheel and tire like the part # AM3S030 would be a great option as long as you have the room for the additional height of 24.1 inches.

  • What Is The Metric Size Conversion For The A78-13 ST Trailer Tire Size
The replacement size for the A78x13ST original tire is the ST175/80-13. The overall diameter is 24.1 inches and the overall width is 7 inches. You might want to measure on your trailer to make sure you have the clearance for the ST175/80-13 size. The Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 inch White Wheel, # AM3S030, you have referenced is a bias tire on a 13 X 4-1/2 white wheel. The tire is a Load Range B, which means it is a 4-ply rated and has a maximum load of 1,100 lbs. at...

  • What Size Wheels And Tires Will Fit On a Carry On 5 X 7 Trailer With Axle Flipped?
The 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30670 has a diameter of 20.7" and a width of 4.9". As long as you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you can look at the Castle Rock ST205/75R14 Radial Tire w/ 14" Liger Aluminum Wheel # CR39ZR if you are upgrading. This tire is 26.14" in diameter which will be just under 3" taller in your fender. It is 7.99" wide which will be 1.5" closer inside your fender which still gives you plenty of clearance. The aluminum wheels are also much better at displacing heat...

  • What Is The Largest Size Wheel and Tire To Fit on a Trailer Axle With 4 on 4" Bolt Pattern?
It sounds like you have a setup like the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30000. This tire 16.1" tall and 4.6" wide. This particular wheel has a 2.5" pilot hole on the wheel. If your tires are held in place with coned lug nuts like the Lug Nut # CE11051 this means your hubs are lug centered and you can switch to a larger pilot hole diameter without issue. • Trailer Modifications and 8 inch to 12 or 13 inch Tire and Wheel Upgrade Recommendations
To upgrade to a larger tire you will have to upgrade to a larger wheel as well, and with that in mind you will want to make sure that the bolt pattern of your new wheel and tires match the existing bolt pattern on your current trailer. I have included a helpful article explaining how to determine the bolt pattern of your existing wheels. Depending on the existing bolt pattern on that your trailer is currently set up for I recommend the following: 4.80-12 - 4 on 4 bolt pattern # AM30620;...

For your bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inch the largest wheel and tire size we have is 175/80D13 like the part # AM3S030 which has an overall diameter of 24 inches. This will be right at 6 inches taller than your current tires.

The next larger tire size in overall diameter than your 5.30-12 is the tire size 175/80-13 like the # AC13R45SMQ which is on a 5 lug wheel or the part # AM3S030 which is a 4 lug. This will give you about 3 inches of additional height.

  • What Trailer Tire Size is the Right Replacement for A78-13 Tires
By definition an A78-13 tire cannot be mounted on a 14 inch wheel since it is a 13 inch tire. Wheel diameter is tricky. When measuring them you do not actually measure the total height of the wheel so you likely have 13 inch wheels. A78-13 is an old way of indicating a tire size. The metric equivalent is ST175/80-13. Since you have a 5 lug wheel it is likely a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. You can measure by following the help article I have linked for you. But if you just need tires...

  • Tire Recommendation for a Boat Trailer with 175/80R13 ST Trailer Tires
Glad you're enjoying our site! We try to have the best info/content on the products we sell. For a tire to install on the rims you currently have I would recommend going with the same size 175/80R13 that you have. For a radial tire a very good price I would recommend the Taskmaster ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWTRTM1758013C as long as it has enough capacity for your trailer. • Replacement Options for a 13 Inch Rim with a 2.5 Inch Diameter Pilot Hole
At this time we do not have a 13 inch, 4 on 4 rim with a 2.5 inch diameter pilot hole but I may have a couple of options available for you. Finding a wheel with a matching pilot diameter is only a concern if you have hubs that are hub-centric. This type of hub uses the hub bore in order to center the wheel. This is what makes matching the pilot hole diameter extremely important. Wheel bolts are typically used instead of lug nuts to attach the wheel on these style hubs. This type is more...

  • Modern Replacement for A78-13 Trailer Tire Size
The A78-13 is an old numbering system for tires that isn't used any longer. The compatible modern tire size is 175/80-13. The # AM3S030 bias tire you'd looked at would work fine, but I'd recommend going with a radial tire in that size, because you'll get better ride quality and radial tires do a better job shedding heat than bias-ply tires do. Given that the priced differential between bias ply and radial tires is just a few dollars, it makes sense for most folks to go with the better...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace a 6.50x13 on 1970 Camper
The 6.50 x 13 tire size is the old numeric sizing used in the 1970s. It means the tire is 6-1/2 inches wide and the height of the tire calculates to 23.4 inches. The closest tire size I have to the 6.50 x 13 tire will be the 175/80-13 size. It is 6.9 inches wide and 24.1 inches tall. You will need to check if you have enough space on your camper for a 1/2 inch wider and 3/4 inch taller tire. The tire will fit on a 4-1/2 inch to 5-1/2 inch wide wheel. With that being said, the 155/80R13 tire size is designed for passenger vehicles. If you're needing wheels for a vehicle then you'll want to go with wheels designed for a vehicle rather than a trailer. If you're planning on using this for a trailer then I highly recommend using trailer tires as they have a stiffer...

The 4 on 4" bolt hole pattern for the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel # AM3S030 is a little bit larger than a 4 on 100mm bolt hole pattern so they aren't interchangeable unfortunately. We typically try to avoid recommending wheels spacers simply because it means the tire/wheel won't be riding on the hub like it was meant to. What I recommend doing is looking for a wheel with an offset so that the wheel sits where it needs to, but can also provide some clearance....

  • What Tire Size Replaces an Old A78-13 Tire Size
The modern metric equivalent to tire size A78-13 is going to be a 175/80-13. You won't be able to use any of the tires we carry though because they are for trailer use only. There is a difference between the way trailer tires are manufactured versus passenger vehicle tires. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. Passenger tires are built for cornering more with lateral forces in mind.
