Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

  • Recommended 5 on 4-1/2 Lug Nut Pattern 13" Wheels for a Boat Trailer
Yes, it will! It looks like your 2024 Triton WCII trailer wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 lug nut pattern so the Aluminum Viking Series Valhalla Trailer Wheel item # AX02350545BMFL. Not sure what size tires you currently have but we have two sizes that will fit the Taskmaster Wheel item # AX02350545BMFL. I have listed them below: ST175/80R13 and ST185/80R13. An ST175/80R13 tire, like item # AM10210 will have a 7" section width and 24.1" diameter. An ST185/80R13 tire, like item # AM10208, will...

  • Larger Trailer Tire to Replace Size 175/80 R13 Load Range C
Yes, assuming you have the clearance between the tire tread and underside of the fender. You'll want at least 3 to 4 inches to allow for the trailer to go over bumps in the road. However, if you plan to keep the 13 inch rim there isn't much taller you can go. The 185/80D13 sized tire # AM1ST79 is only about 0.3 inches larger in diameter compared to what you have now. If you increase the rim to a 14 inch the # AM32161 is a 205/75R14 that would increase the total diameter by a little...

  • Tire Recommendation for a Trailer Used on Paved and Dirt Roads Size 175/80-13
The best tire for your trailer will really depend on how much time you spend on paved roads versus dirt or gravel roads. At the 175/80-13 tire size, you can choose between a radial tire and a bias ply tire. Radial tires, like part # AM10210, have more flex, better ground contact, traction, tread wear and runs cooler than a bias ply tire. A bias ply tire, like part # AM1ST77 has a thicker sidewall and is ideal for off-road use, but if you spend more time traveling on paved roads, a radial...

  • Is it Okay to Have Different Size Tires on a Trailer
Having different size tires on your trailer can cause a couple of different issues. The first one being that they have different weight capacities. Your 4.8-12 ranges from 785 lbs at 60 psi to 990 lbs at 90 psi whereas your 5.3-12 ranges from 840 lbs at 55 psi to 1250 lbs at 105 psi. An important point of consideration is when using two different size tires, the load has to be no more than the capacity of the lowest rated tire. With this substantial difference with both weight capacities...

  • How to Determine the Right Air Pressure to Fill a Trailer Tire
I can end this debate for you real fast! Trailer tires, which will have an ST in front of the size, should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. Trailer tires usually do not have a recommended and maximum psi indication so I am curious if the tries on the camper are ST tires or regular passenger vehicle tires. On a regular trailer tire you would inflate it to the max psi indicated on the tire because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical...

  • Solution for Trailer with 13 inch Wheels that Allows for Higher Speed Ratings
Hey Andre, I have an easier solution to allow you to go faster speeds with your trailer that is pretty simple. All you need is a tire with a higher speed rating like the part # AM10210 which is the tire size ST175/80-13 and has an 81 mph speed rating. This means you get the higher speed rating and you don't have to modify the trailer at all.

  • Recommended Higher Load Capacity for Kenda K550 Trailer Tires
I looked up the Kenda K550 Trailer Tires and they are offered in many sizes from 13"-15" wheels. If you can let me know which exact size you have (listed on sidewall of tire), I would be glad to offer a replacement option for you in a higher load range. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10210 for example is a 175/8013 tire with load range d rating suited for use up to 1,650 lb rating. I have attached a full list of our replacement tires below.

  • Can Trailer Tires be put on Horse Drawn Wagon?
It is feasible to put trailer tires on your horse drawn wagon. You would need to get tires that fit the same size wheel, which is 13 inches, and also make sure that your new tires have the appropriate load range for your wagon. We have tires that will fit 13" wheels and are sized 175/80-13. Your current tires are 7.3" wide and have a diameter of 23.2"; tires that are 175/80-13 are 6.9" wide and have a diameter of 24". • Replacement Trailer Tire 175/80R13
We have a great replacement tire that is 175/80R13, part # AM10210. It is not a white wall tire though, and we don't carry any white wall tires. But this tire is a radial tire that would work great on your camper. Check out the review video I attached for this tire as well as the help article I attached on trailer tires.

  • Recommended Load Range D 175/80/R13 Tire
No, that won't cause any issues whatsoever. Especially since you are sticking with the same 175/80/R13 tire size. Unless you are wanting to change your wheels out as well, you'll want the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D item # AM10210 over the item # AM31998 you were looking at. This is the exact same Kenda tire that comes with the wheel tire combo.

Hi J.P.; I'm sorry to say we do not carry any axles that match the 54" length you have now. The best I can offer is the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR1200S02. This has a universal design so it will fit any frame width. It will also upgrade your suspension. The rating is a bit higher at 1,200 lbs but it is the lowest we have. This system is compatible with any hub that uses # L44649 inner and outer bearings. We don't have anything that is integrated or sealed but you could...

For an alternative tire/wheel combo we have the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Black Wheel with +.5 Offset # AM31241 which does come with the raised center but it has a Bias tire and a wheel with an offset. • Choosing Between Kenda Karrier and Kenda Loadstar ST175/80-13 Tire
Karrier and Loadstar are two different brand names used by Kenda. There's no difference in quality or function between the two brand names. For a ST175/80-13 Radial trailer tire in load range D, I'd recommend part # AM10210 if you're looking for a tire only. If you're needing a wheel/tire combo, we have a few different choices that would provide a ST175/80-13 Load Range D radial tire mounted on a white powder coated, galvanized or aluminum spoke wheel. • What is Difference between Karrier ST175/80R13 Tires AM10210 and KE78KV
Hey Walter, the Karrier tires part # AM10210 and # KE78KV both are really similar tires from Karrier. They both have same speed rating of 81 mph, Load Range of D, and weight capacity of 1,650 lbs. The only really noteworthy difference is the tread pattern. The part # AM10210 has more of what looks like a vehicle tread pattern and the part # KE78KV has a more basic type tread pattern. I would probably just go with the less expensive option if it were me as I don't think you'll ever end up...

  • Highest Capacity 13 inch Trailer Tire Recommendation
If the total weight of your pop up camper is 3,300 lbs then you would need a wheel/tire combo that at least has the capacity of 1,650 lbs. The closest tire we have to that capacity in your size is the part # AM10210 which has a 1,610 lbs at 65 psi capacity. Your best option would be to bump up to the slightly taller tire size of 185/80-13 like part # AM1ST79 which has a 1,725 lbs at 65 psi. This tire fits the same rim size as your current size and is not even 1/2 an inch taller in diameter.

  • Replacement Tire Recommendation for an ST185/80R13 Size Tire on a Travel Trailer
The load range D on the Loadstar ST185/80D13 # AM1ST79 actually gives you a higher weight rating than the C load range. For this size D is 1,710 lbs at 65 psi while C is 1,480 lbs at 50 psi. It doesn't hurt to have a tire that is rated for more weight and the benefit to this tire is that it has a max speed rating of 81 mph. If you need a wheel as well then I recommend part # AM3S331 as this is the same tire but it comes with a white wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. Bias tires,...

  • Can ST175/80R13 Be Used On One Axle and ST185/80D13 Be Used On Other Axle Of 2013 Jayco TT?
It is not recommend to mix tire sizes on a trailer, as it will cause the trailer to sit unevenly and put additional pressure on one axle. Now in addition your ST175/80R13 tires are radials where the ST185/80D13 are bias ply and these should not be mixed either. These tires have different ply designs and handling characteristics and mixing them on the trailer will cause a very unpleasant and unstable towing experience. • Replacement 175/80R13 Tire Recommendation for a Coleman Pop Up Camper

For your application I Recommend going with the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 because of how reliable the Kenda tires are and that this tire has a Load Range of D (1,650 lbs at 70 psi) and a speed rating of 81 mph so it will be an improvement to the older tires you currently have which likely are still rated for only 65 mph.
