An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Review of Timbren Vehicle Suspension - Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement - TDRTT3500

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Timbren rear suspension enhancement system. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2000, the 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 trucks, the 1994 to 2002 Dodge Ram 3500 trucks, and the 1994 to 1999, Dodge Ram 3500 cabin chassis models. And on a custom fit part like this, always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show if this'll work tree application. Now this will improve your suspension, your handling and the safety.

It provides additional support as needed. So you always have a nice, smooth, comfortable ride. It will allow the leaf spring ample movement while cushioning light loads, and it does not affect the empty ride of the vehicle. It will become more rigid as more weight is added. This will increase stability, provides great performance while hauling heavy loads, and helps reduce vehicle sag. These do work independently side to side, help compensate for any off-center loads.

They do reduce body roll when swerving and turning corners, and they will act as shock absorbers taking the brunt of any bumps and rough roads. Helps extend the life of your vehicle suspension. Does include everything laid out here on the table. It includes the two A-eon hollow rubber Springs right here. All the vehicle specific bracket you need to install it, all the hardware you need...

Nice set of detailed instructions that'll describe how to install it. Now it does install directly onto the frame. There's no drilling required. Few specs on this, the capacity is 7,000 pounds. Now the Timbren springs will not increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity, so you do want to make sure not to exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight limit.

And these are designed to work with a suspension system that is in good working order. But that should do it for the review on the Timbren rear suspension enhancement system..

Product is high quality, all parts fit well and I didn’t have to force anything. High strength thick steel, and the jounce bumpers are seriously heavy duty. I haven’t had a load on the truck (98 Ram 3500) since install a few days ago, so they haven’t touched the base plates yet.

One thing I’m concerned with is the jounce bumpers are touching and are right up against the lift blocks and U bolts. I’m unsure of the longevity these bumpers will have after a heavy load is on them and they are constantly rubbing on the hardware. Also, as the load gets heavier they expand outward as they flatten out so I’m also concerned with if that will push my lift blocks outward and mess with the suspension.

I’m prepping for a slide in camper and when I get it I will have to take a look and see what effects that weight has on the suspension, the bumpers, and ride quality.

I am not sure when I will be able to have a load on it to confirm, as I do not have a camper just yet. I am currently working on upgrading the suspension in preparation for one. Is there an alternative similar solution, other than airbags - as I dont want those, that can be run? With a similar weight capacity? Kind of interesting Timbren hasnt run into this issue before with the older Ram 3500s. Wonder if this is somehow unique to my truck? All the rear components are original OEM, so it seems kind of strange.

You mentioned that the jounce bumpers were touching up against the lift blocks without a load in the truck and I wondered if you could send a picture of the installation?

I do have additional questions for you. Is the top picture showing how the springs look with a loaded weight? Have you already installed your slide in camper? I wanted to see if the top bracket were touching as well? The manufacturer is trying to determine if a smaller diameter spring would help or not

Jimmy

Both pictures are right after installation with a completely unloaded bed. Since installation, I have not had weight in the bed, so I can not 100 say if the top brackets would touch the U bolts or leaf springs. But from looking at it just now, it appears the top bracket would just barely touch the U bolts with a loaded bed, and would definitely touch if there was side to side movement with a loaded bed like going over a speed bump, pot holes, or uneven terrain.

I did hear back from Timbren. Currently there is not a bracket that would be narrower that they can offer. When loaded if the brackets interfere with the smaller spring, then it may be advisable to return the kit.

This product works great. Truck rides as before without a load and fully loaded the sag in the rear went from 3.75" to less than 2" and rides and handles better under load. Only downside was that the brackets did not fit my truck, and I had to re-manufacture them to make them fit my stock truck.

Thanks for asking! I still like the way this works on my truck, empty or loaded or towing heavy.

Great product!

Quick service, with everything as advertised !

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

Pros: Cheaper and easier to install than airbags, do the job when load is enough to compress the shock, with added weight or towing, then it stiffens the rear very nicely.
Cons: Doesn't do anything until there is 2-3cm of compressed shock. It sits above the contact point, doesn't touch. Under normal driving, there is no benefit/improved stiffness/anti sway in rear or a leveling of the factory rear sag in a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra.
If had it to do over, would have put some kind of spacer in between product and upper included bracket, the supplied bolt is long enough to accommodate, to eliminate the gap, and lift the rear 1-2 cm. Should do it anyway, maybe when swapping to summer wheels next month.

by:

The order with Will at etrailer was great. He was very helpful and knowledgeable, Installation was not easy but not too bad, The hardest part was removing the factory pieces I removed them from below which was a blind nut removal operation. This is on a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter motorhome. After removal of the factory pieces I discovered that access is much easier on top between the tire and the mud flap, I turned the front wheels inward and they didn't have to be removed. The front of the motorhome had to be raised quite a bit to get the Timbren piece jnserted. Also I learned to tighten the bolt and nut in the Timbren bumper as much as possible before installation because there is no access to the bolt head when tightening the top nut to keep the bolt from turning, preventing tightening the nut.

by:

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

by:

Easy install took about 20 minutes on my 2017 Ram 3500 SRW. Had about 1/2 inch clearance as recommended. Loaded up my 5th wheel (2350 hitch weight) and about 200 lbs of gear in the bed. Just got back from a 800 mile camping trip through mountains of TN. You can really feel the difference around those sharp corners and uneven surfaces. The truck felt firm and controlled not hard and jarring as some have mentioned. Going over those overpasses with the wonderfully smooth (Not) joists was greatly improved. The truck would squat and rebound again, with a firm controlled response. Driving without a load felt the same as before without them. I would highly recommend these! Ordering from etrailer continues to be my go to option!

by:

These work great for giving you a solid towing experience when loaded heavy; however, when driving empty you definitely get the jounce bumper “into the air” experience when driving on moderate to rough roads. I have the recommended gap installed between the axle and the timbrens, but with terrible midwest roads and highways it doesn’t seem to be enough gap. Smooth roads it rides great. It’s driving 80mph on the expressway and hitting potholes or large cracks where these will hit causing uncomfortable harsh ride.

I’ve resorted to installing and then subsequently removing these anytime I use my travel trailer for longer trips (30minute removal time). I tow a 7000lb loaded travel trailer with an f150 and just needed something to make the soft half ton suspension from porpoising too much on bad-roads. Mission accomplished when towing as I said these things work great for heavy loads. It almost rides better with heavy loads…. I was going to give airbags a try but the reviews from others have scared me from those because even with airbags at the lowest setting you still get the jouncing on bumpy roads.

by:

So just got them installed today 3/27/24 haven't hooked up the 5th wheel yet but will be this weekend so we'll find out if they are good as everyone claims they are fingers crossed. Install was crazy simple took about 30min(had to find a wrench) have about 1/2in gap between the axle, really excited to test them. Will update the review after this weekend.

The Timbren rear bump stops for 2020 Suburban were great quality and fit perfectly in the replacement of the original ones with no problems. The old ones pulled right out by hand with no hassle. When I installed the new ones I put 2x4 blocks that I cut underneath the bump stops. Then hooked up the 6,400 lbs travel trailer with about 750 lbs of tongue weight on it and they pressed right into place. The Suburban was more stable because it had less swaying while towing. I also gained about 1 inche more in the fender gap which means less rearend saging.

by:

I was back and forth between Timbren SES and airbags. Everyone in forums were very biased toward air bags and very opinionated on the Timbren SES. Yet I could find one instance in which someone tried the Timbrens, were dissatisfied and then switched to air bags. I called etrailer, Jamie recommended this product to me for my application. Installation on a 20-year-old truck had me nervous, I live in the Midwest and have a lot of salt. Installation was a breeze, and I have a B&W 5th Wheel Hitch (turnover gooseneck ball). This made the install a bit more challenging simply because I had a large bolt through the frame directly above my bump stop nut. If you do this install with the B&W Hitch, get a set of gear wrenches, or borrow a buddies 15mm and 9/16 wrenches. You need the 15mm to remove the factory nut and the 9/16 to install the Timbrens. I sprayed wd40 two nights in a row prior to installation to make sure I had good penetration of oil - I didn't break a bolt or a knuckle. I recommend installing the Timbren spring to the mounting plate, then install the mounting plate with Timbren to the truck. I didn’t need to remove my wheels or my spare, I jacked up the back under the hitch, used jack stands and let the weight of the axle separate the rear end from the truck giving ample room for the installation. After installation, I checked the clearance of the TImbren from the axle and had 1 inch of clearance. I installed my 1200-pound pickup camper and the springs just started touching the axle. I have a 21-foot fiberglass boat and seen about a 1/4-inch drop after I connected it to my truck. These things work and best part is – no maintenance and no danger of shifting weight if an airbag lost pressure or was punctured/damaged. I hunt with this vehicle and drive through thick brush and timber, I feel airbags wouldn’t hold up with the abuse I put my truck through. The Timbren SES system took the squat out of my truck and made the drop from the connection of my heavy boat hardly noticeable. Thank you etrailer, great experience as usual!

by:

Installed these Timbrens on my 2016 F350 to enhance the stability of my truck for a slide in truck camper. Have loved the results of them. They have noticeably helped leveling the truck/camper combo, and sway while driving. When the camper is off the truck these are not engaged. Have had no issues and would recommend them.

by:

I don't usually write reviews but in this case I have to. I have been using these springs for about a year now and they work exactly as advertised. I carry a truck camper on my truck from March until November. Once I loaded my camper the truck sagged very noticeably. I tried the Roadmaster Active Suspension (don't waste your money) before I discovered the Timbren springs. The Timben springs installed easily, eliminated the sag and gave the truck a much more stable ride because it eliminated the side to side rocking in the back. If you are thinking about getting these, you will not be disappointed.

by:

I now have Timbren springs on 3 different trucks. They are one "solution" for tucks that are heavily loaded occasionally. Honestly, I dont like the handling characteristics of any of these trucks when the rear axle is bearing on the Timbren springs. Im not saying that theyre a bad product, and the company is reputable and easy to work with. I prefer a traditional overload spring or something similar to Stable Load overload spring blocks, which engage the overload springs sooner. I just prefer the way a loaded truck handles when it bears weight on a traditional overload leaf spring as opposed to the Timbren.

by:

Despite reading about the popularity in using Timbren’s for suspension modifications to assist in ride quality when loading up the Odyssey, I haven’t found many reviews about the Timbren’s for 4th gen Odyssey though there are a ton of positive reviews for the 5th gen Odyssey on the forums and internet.

I went with Timbren’s due to the “set it and forget it” lack of maintenance. I do notice a more stable ride even unloaded at highway speeds. There’s less sway in on/off-ramps and big sweepers. Not a huge change, but warmly noticeable. About the same quality of change one might experience from buying a brand new set of tires vs. not dangerously worn down tread. Where it really shines is under load/heavy cargo.

Before Pic (unloaded mulch); After Pic (loaded) - definitely not as much squat as with the prior OEM bump stops! Comfortable ride with less jostling/sway and haven’t bottomed out the springs over rough road. I’m impressed! Install was fairly easy, about 45 min per side taking my time, cleaning removed parts. One year later, I haven’t had any issues, and I feel very comfortable loading the minivan with all our gear/stuff.

I do not tow.

If you have room on the outside of your frame just above your axles, then I recommend moving to air bags with the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Springs,...

  • SumoSprings or Timbren, Which One Is Better for my 2022 Ram 2500 4WD
I would be happy to help you setup your 2022 Ram 2500 4WD with some helper springs. I recommend the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs item # SS27GR. These springs have a 5,000 lbs capacity when they are compressed at 50%. The best part about them is that they are a two piece system and the two pieces stay disconnected when the truck is unloaded. This allows the suspension to travel much more and provide a smoother ride. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System - Rear Axle item #...

  • Troubleshooting Timbren Springs Contacting Axle On a 2017 Ram 2500 With No Additional Load
The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR2500D that you have for your 2017 Ram 2500 4X4 with the factory air suspension is designed to fit a vehicle with good suspension and vehicle lift or lowering kits. You should have 1/2" to 1-1/2" of clearance between the Timbren springs and your axle with your Ram unloaded. Seeing as your springs are touching with no weight you either have some kind of lowering kit on the rear of your truck to level it out or your springs have worn to the...

  • Recommended Timbren Suspension Enhancement for 5th Wheel Towing with a 2015 Ram 2500 4x4
Yes, the Timbren suspension enhancement system (SES) jounce-style springs will help to level your 2015 Ram 2500 when you are under a load. The correct part you want to use is # TDR2500D as the other part for the rear suspension, part # TDRTT3500E, is designed for service vehicles that are under a constant heavy load. I have attached a review video for the Timbrens as well as a photo that a customer sent in of this same system installed on their 2014 Ram 2500 for you to reference. One...

  • Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System For a 2020 Ram 2500 With Factory Air Suspension
I reached out to Timbren who verified with their engineers and the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System # TDRTT3500E will work on your 2020 Ram 2500 with the factory air suspension. It will not work on trucks that have the leaf or coil springs with the auto level rear suspension add on. Do note that the Timbren springs are taller than the factory bump stops on your Ram so you will not be able to drop the suspension as far as you currrently can. You are also looking at their severe service...

  • Recommended Timbren Bump Stop for 2018 Dodge Ram 2500
A good fit for your 2018 Ram 2500 is the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR2500D. With the weight you are hauling/towing, this help prevent your rear from sagging and keep your truck level. There's also the Severe Service Kit # TDRTT3500E, but that is more for use with a slide-in camper or salt spreader. The Timbren # TDR2500D I recommended for you is a better fit for your RV and fuel weight as well as for good loaded and unloaded ride quality. One thing to note is that...

  • Will the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System Fit a 2015 Ram 2500 With Factory Air Suspension
Yes, the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System is one of the very few suspension enhancement options that you have that will work on a 2015 Ram 2500 with the factory air suspension. That said, I would actually recommend the part # TDR2500D for your truck instead of the part # TDRTT3500E as these are more designed for service trucks or those with an in-bed camper.

  • Is Timbren Or SumoSprings Rear Suspension Enhancement Better For A 2022 Ram 2500
Determining if the Timbren # TDRTT3500E or the SumoSprings # SS27GR is better for your needs will depend on your application. With the Timbren option having 8,000 pounds of load leveling capacity, they will of course be the more heavy duty option. They will definitely help with sag and body roll, but this is intended as a Severe Service kit. What I mean by that is it should be used with a slide-in camper, salt spreader, or something heavy in or on the bed of your truck. With these being...

  • Can I Use the Firestone RideRite Air Bags on a 2018 Ram 2500 with a Front Leveling Kit
Even with the leveling kit on the front of your 2018 Ram 2500, you'll still be able to use the Firestone Ride Rite Air Bags # F2615 on your rear axle and they're going to do a great job helping fight squat when you're towing your travel trailer. In regards to raising the rear of the truck and changing the hitch height, this shouldn't be an issue since they're being used to bring the truck back to stock height after the tongue weight of the trailer is put on; if your truck suspension is...
