Video Transcript for Hopkins Vehicle Lights - Replacement Bulbs - HM20101VA Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM20101VA. This is the Hopkins Backup Alert, replacement 3156 Bulb with an audible alert. That's to add safety while in reverse. You can replace your tail light backup bulb with this warning light. As you put your vehicle in the reverse gear, anyone or anything who might be behind you will be alerted. This is going to send out a really consistent beeping sound.

The beeping sound can be clearly heard, again, when you move your vehicle to the reverse gear. That sound will vary depending on the vehicle that this is installed in. This is not a universal application, though it does fit in any vehicles, but if your vehicle's reversible to size 3156, then this product is going to work perfect for your application. I'm going to go ahead and hook it up to our external power source that way you can see how bright the bulb is as well as hear that audible beeping alert. Here at the housing, that's where the sound's going to come out. I'll get this connected and you'll be able to hear it.

Get all the wires on there. Okay, now turn it on. You can hear that consistent beeping as well as the bright light. It's really going to send out that consistent beeping sound alerting anybody that may be behind the vehicle when we move the vehicle into the reverse gear. That's going to do it for today's review of part number HM20101VA.

This is the Hopkins Backup Alert. .

Bulb with an audible alert installed on my 2009 Ford Ranger.

by:

Very happy with the service I received - fast shipping, and I got exactly what I ordered. The sound level of the product itself is a bit weak. On my old pickup I had an external beeper, and could always hear it from the cab whenever backing up. This one is easy to install, but I have to listen very carefully to be sure that it is working when I back up. I would recommend getting an external beeper mounted on your vehicle if you want to be sure people know that you are backing up.

Still works fine. Havent had any problems with it. Still think that it should be a little louder.

by:

Every week, I see in the news where some mom in her suv has backed over her own child. This alarm will catch the child's attention and give time to shout or get away. It should also work on dogs and cats. Is not effective on trash cans. ---Only suggestion: that the light blink.

When a backup light went out on our Coachman Motorhome I was just going to replace the bulb with the same. Looking around online I found this replacement bulb that also made an audible sound when the vehicle is in reverse. Visibility in reverse is nearly impossible, even in small motorhomes like ours ( 24'). We have a backup camera, but the viewing range is very limited to just beyond the rear bumper. With this product I have another level of safety I didn't have before, with the audible sound.
etrailer was really good about keeping me in the loop as to where my order was in the process. Turned out it was on Backorder, and would take a few days longer to make it to me in Seattle, but they sent emails on the status of the order regularly .
Cool product and great service from seller= a good buying experience!

1999 Ford F-150 and F-250 Light Duty

Definitely easy to install just like replacing regular back up bulb. Also, etrailer sent me the correct light for my model and year pickup truck. The whole installation process took about ten minutes, most of the time trying to find the correct socket size wrench! Only one minor issue is the back up alert sound is not that dramatic in volume while sitting in the truck and backing up. Maybe it is louder outside. In any case, this beats attaching brackets and splicing wires for backup alert as with other type units.

by:

Product worked as advertised. Installation was as easy as replacing a light bulb. Bulb is attached permanently. Would liked to have seen a socket so bulb could be replaced. When the bulb burns out I will replace the unit with a standard 3156 bulb and splice the alarm into the lamp wiring and leave it somewhere in the tail light cavity.

1994 Ford F-250 and F-350

Product was exactly what I was looking for at a very reasonable price. The only problem I had was figuring out how to remove the tailight lens (NOT etrailer.com's problem). I wanted a means of warning anyone behine my truck that I was backing up and this was perfect.

by:

There was one of these installed ( not from etrailer) when I purchased my van. After a year or so it stopped working. I looked for quite some time to find a replacement that wasn't $40.00+ and E trailer gave me one. I can now feel better when backing up , knowing I will be heard and well lit . Thank you.

by:

Nice idea, but it took a few bulbs to be successful. The first ones either never alarmed or didn't light up. Replacements worked beautifully and still are months later

by:

easy installation, works well. won't know about the light output until I use the backup lights in the dark. Good service and packaging from the seller.

by:

Easy to install. So far it is working fine. Most anyone close by should hear it. However someone in a car might not hear it. I have a van with some blind spots. This is a big improvement over not having the warning. I ordered just one. I may order a second to see if that would increase the sound level. Right now I would recommend.

This product is a cost effective way to provide safety warnings during construction activity. We priced other items and they were way more expensive and required a mechanic to install. In a couple of minutes we installed this item and it works perfectly. Etrailer.com has a quick and easy website and great service!

What a great design idea and quality product. A snap to install and works superbly. The brightness of the small bulb is surprisingly brighter than the larger OEM bulb.
Thanks for the this simple solution to our perplexing safety concern.

  • How to Determine Correct Backup Alert Bulb for a 2016 Ford Transit Van
To determine which Backup Alert Bulb, like the Hopkins # HM20100VA, is compatible with your 2016 Ford Transit Van you will simply need to find out what size bulb you have. The Hopkins part referenced will replace a 1156 bulb and it includes an audible alert that activates when you put your vehicle in reverse. The only other bulb that we currently have for this application it part # HM20101VA which replaces a 3156 bulb. If neither of these bulbs is the correct replacement you can always...

  • Back Up Alarm for a 2011 Ford F-250 Super Duty
It looks like the reverse light bulb type on a 2011 Ford F-250 is a 921 or 7440. We do not have a back up alarm that fits this socket type. But not to worry because you can still use surface mount back up alarm # BK97DB. Mount this alarm under the truck and wire it into a revere light circuit. At 97 decibels it will be louder than the type that fits in place of a reverse light bulb.

  • Adding LED Backup Lights to a 2006 Chevy Silverado
It sounds like you are installing additional back up lights on your 2006 Chevy Silverado. The easiest way to find the correct power wire is to locate the tail light wiring and then use a circuit tester such as # PTW2992 to probe the wires when the truck is in reverse. Take all necessary precautions when performing the test including chocking the wheels, having the emergency brake on, and the person in the cab with their foot on the brake the whole time the vehicle is in reverse. • Backup Alarm for 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan
Based on my research your 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan uses a 3157 bulb for its reverse light. The Hopkins Backup Alert # HM20101VA that you referenced is designed to replace a 3156 bulb, which will physically fit in place of your van's 3157 but may not function properly because of the difference in design. We do not have a similar replacement backup alert bulb that's designed for the 3157 type bulb so your best option will be with a separate backup alarm like the Pollak # PK41820 that can...

  • Back Up Alert Recommendation for a 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon
I do have a back up alert that you can use but the Hopkins Backup Alert, # HM20101VA, is designed to replace a 3156 bulb and will not replace the 921 bulb on your 2013 Subaru Outback Wagon. Instead, I recommend the Custer Surface Mount Back-Up Alarm, # BK97DB. This alarm can mount on the frame and wires into the reverse light circuit on the vehicle. Once it is wired in it will send a 97 decibel alert when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

  • Recommended Backup Alarm Light for 2007 Honda CRV
I show the bulb size for the 2007 Honda CR-V is 7440. In terms of a Hopkins Backup Alert with a light that plugs into the tail light socket, we only have # HM20100VA and # HM20101VA, which cover the two most common sizes (1156 and 3156). Neither size is compatible with the bulbs used in your vehicle. What I recommend for you on your 2007 Honda CR-V is the Custer Surface Mount Back-up Alarm, # BK97DB. This unit can be mounted in an out of the way place at the back of your CR-V. It will...

  • Is the Hopkins Backup Alert, # HM20100VA a Universal Application
The Hopkins Backup Alert, # HM20100VA, is not a universal application, though it does fit many vehicles. It fits into a common bulb size socket. You will need to check the bulbs on your vehicle or vehicles to determine if they take the 1156 bulb. If they do, then you can use this alert. Another common bulb size is 3156. We do not have a bulb with alarm in the 7440 type. However, we do offer a backup alarm that can be wired into your Yukon XL's reverse light circuit.
