Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2011 Ford Escape - Draw-Tite

Today in this 2011 Ford Escape, we're going to install Part Number 75751 from Draw-Tite. All right. This is what the hitch looks like when it's installed on the Escape. Next we'll give you some measurements that will help you out in selecting some accessories, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground will be about 17 inches. If we center the hitch pin hold to the edge of the bumper, it will be about 1 and 1/2 inches.

The hitch does go past the bumper probably about a 1/2 inch to 3/4 of an inch. Now I'll go ahead and show you how the hitch is installed. All right, our first step is to get our vehicle ready to install the hitch. Now we're going to have to lower our exhaust out of the way because one of our attachment points is right here. While we can get to it just fine, but we have no good way of tightening it down, so that's why we've got to move this muffler out of our way.

We'll spray down our rubber hangers with some lubricant, and we'll go ahead and push, pull or pry these hangers off. Take a pry bar to it and get our leverage on the exhaust tube and pull it apart. We've got a lot of room with just that one alone, so this would be actually optional right here to remove this. There you go. All right, now we'll go ahead and show you where the hitch mounts up.

We're going to use these two holes in the side of the frame and this one right here. Okay, now we're looking at our passenger side. We'll go ahead and take a look at our driver side, and it'll be the same thing. Before we do anything else, we'll go ahead and show you how the hitch will work with the hardware. This is our hardware.

This block and a 7/16" bolt will be ran inside the frame and out the bottom of the frame and through our hitch. We'll install a common-tooth washer, and the teeth in the washer's always stays towards the hitch and then a 7/16" nut. This is basically, in our vehicle, it's going to be the same all the way around the hitch. Okay, now to help us get our hardware in place, we're going to use this bolt leader that comes with the kit. We're going to put it through the hole we're going to use, and then we're going to work our way out the back of the frame. This will be our access hole here. We'll take our block and thread it into place. Then take our carriage bolt and thread it on, then pull our wire through and our bolt. Okay, we're done with our passenger side, let's go ahead and repeat the same thing on our driver side. Okay, now at this point, we'll get an extra set of hands and put our hitch up. When we put our hitch up, we want to make sure we go around the inside edge of the frame and that we don't push our bolt up. We'll install a common-tooth washer and then a 7/16" nut. Now we'll leave those 2 bolts loose so we can move our hitch around, up and down. That way we can line up our hitch with the holes in the side of the frame. We'll just do the same thing we did before. We'll just take our bolt leader and run it through the hitch and out our access hole. Now also, some models have a large hole in the bottom. We can also use this as our access hole, then you want to put your bolt in backwards. Then we go ahead and pull it through our hole. Then we'll go ahead and install our common-tooth washer and nut. This is the same all the way around the hitch. Okay, we're done with our passenger side, let's go ahead and repeat the same thing on the driver side. With all our hardware loosely installed, we'll go ahead and tighten down the bolts on our hitch. When we tighten these bolts down, you may see the hitch draw up against the frame and that's a good thing. Then we'll go ahead and torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. Okay, now for our hitch installed and torque down, we'll go ahead and re-install our exhaust, and then we'll be finished. Okay, with that, that will finish it for our install, Part Number 75751 from Draw-Tite on our 2011 Ford Escape. .

My husband and I purchased the Draw-Tite MaxFrame 75751 trailer hitch over a year ago. It has worked out great for us. It was easy to install and easy to use. We have pulled a U-Haul trailer with it and also use it frequently to take our two place kayak to different lakes and rivers. Two thumbs up on this product!! 674398

I've put bolt on receiver hitches on other vehicles before. This particular model had some gotchas. First, not all the right nuts came with it. See the picture. One of the nuts was missing, and it was replaced with a smaller size that isn't in parts list at all. We had to go to a hardware store to get the final nut needed. The Escape has full box tube frame members. You have to use the ingenious bolt pulling wires included to thread into an opening, pull the blocks and bolts through the frame, and then out the right holes. It takes a long time to figure out the proper route from the instructions - they are the worst exploded engineering views I've ever seen from an ease of comprehension aspect. The videos are worth watching before installing. I went through both block-n-bolt pulling wires - they give you two. I wrecked the first one with half the bolts pulled, and by the time I had the last bolt through, it had wrecked the second one. Whew! That was close. I used jackstands to hold the hitch up while I bolted it up. You need to have deep well sockets with extension to do this part well. You will have parts left over, since this comes with all the parts for all possible Escape tow package and transmission configurations. Overall, it is a very well made, precision, solid hitch. More strength than we will ever need on this vehicle. Make sure you have all the right parts before you begin installation. 184819

Installed without a hitch. lol. At 62 years old, lying on the ground in winter is not my idea of fun, but having watched the video, it was installed in 30 minutes, numb fingers and all. Ordered it on Sunday night, rec'd it on Thursday. Only problem was with customer service. I never rec'd notification that it was shipped until after I rec'd the hitch. Two days later, I picked up my new trailer and towed it 120 miles with not problem. It worked as expected Thanks 63769

A great experience from the start. Easy ordering on the website. Great video instructions. Wonderful email follow up from ordering to delivery. Actually delivered faster than the estimate. The eTrailer.com employees really care and it shows. I am not a mechanic but I am handy. I installed it myself - no help. 2009 Ford Escape. I didn't need to jack up the car. I actually hung it from some frame holes with wire and then slipped in some old bolts temporarily. Once it was at an appropriate level, I snaked in the bolts and it worked like a charm. I found that using oversized holes in the frame for snaking purposes was a lot easier than trying to snake through the entire frame. So, if you have any oversized holes near the target holes, I would try to use to get the bolts and brackets through. In my case, I was fortunate and the holes for this purpose didn't need to be made larger. Watch the videos that are provided!! I dropped the exhaust out of the way and I also dropped the spare tire to give myself enough room for installation. Once it was installed, the exhaust and the spare went back into position with no problem at all. I work slowly and probably not too efficiently. But less than two hours unassisted was a lot less than I thought it would be. I've uploaded some pictures of the finished installation. I can't say enough tood things. Price, quality and service at the top! Thanks so much. 33438

I think It might be overkill for the 4cyl., but the price difference makes a towing issue not the hitch's. Unlike the class 2, the class three did not have a spacer. I didn't even jack up the Escape and tinkered with putting the wrong 4 washers on, then changing my mind. By myself, the hitch was an easy install. A little wondering if the hitch was square and level, but once you look at it. The receiver is off center with the tubes. Not necessarily in a bad way. 363095

This hitch worked perfectly for what I was needing. While I would have preferred a square hitch, etrailer didn't have one in a Class III designation. After successfully installing it on my 2011 Ford Escape, I think it looks just fine. I have yet to tow anything, but it looks like it will definitely be able to withstand the lighter loads I throw at it. The videos on their websites are very helpful! 420131

The hitch is well built and sturdy, good instructions for installation and looks like it will hold up well. Some of the paint flaked off on the hitch around some of the corners during shipping. Also some flaked off over the welds. I don't think this is a big deal but just wanted to be honest. The hitch looks a million times better on the back of my Escape than some of the others I've seen out there. By far the best looking hitch you can get. No gaudy square rails under the truck to see, or unfinished welded edges, etc. Installation took me about an hour. I used a jack stand to hold up one end while I lifted the other. It was cumbersome but it worked. I recommend taping the bolts in place so they don't pop back into the frame rail when you lift the hitch up. The Yakima Double Down 4 is well built and requires a small amount of assembly. I think its going to be a great item, haven't carried any bikes yet but plan to this weekend. One thing, I wish e-Trailer would have suggested the Yakima Deadlock to go with the rack. I'm definitely going to want the lock for the rack and bikes. I will have to place another order but would have preferred to buy it at the same time. Awesome service from e-Trailer. I will definitely shop here again. I appreciate the continued correspondence about my purchase. 42820

If you will be installing this alone, be ready for some WORK. Other than that, the thing fits as required and looks like it will be totally acceptable. Happily, it fit the car really well, so while I was schooching around on my creeper, I was able to hold it it place with just a 4x4 on a jack. (Keep the 4x4 short of the exhaust...) And their "snakes" needed help. After an hour of fighting I gave up and made a snake of bailing wire, to which I bent their snake, and then things went forward. Again: great fit. Obnoxious install - but that was predictable. 131992

I ordered my hitch on a Saturday and it arrived on Wednesday. The shipping box the hitch came in was damaged so I was afraid parts might be missing. Fortunately, all parts and instructions were still in the box because they were taped to the hitch. I removed the hitch and installation parts and did a quick review of the instructions. The printed instructions are not as helpful as the short video on the website so I recommend watching the video first. They send 2 pull wires. I destroyed the first wire pulling the first four bolts and blocks through. I used the second and final wire to pull the remaining 2 bolts and blocks through without destroying it. The trick is to carefully thread the wire off of the bolt by trying to keep its size integrity. I stretched the first wire too much when removing from the first bolt. Since I did the installation by myself, after installing the most forward bolt and nut on each side, I figured out that I could place a bolt through one of the rear holes from the outside to hold the hitch in place while I threaded the other bolt through the frame channel. It worked well. I did not have to use jack stands or rope to hold the hitch on place by using that technique. It took me a total of 40 minutes from opening the box and removing the contents to tightening the last bolt and pushing the exhaust pipe back onto the post. The only thing that I think would be a bonus would be to send a bolt puller wire for each bolt. They send 2 but since there are 6 bolts, some extra pull wires would be great. I did notice some slag (small bumps) on the Tubing that made the finish look less that perfect. The slag is obviously from the welding during the manufacturing process. The manufacturer could do some final cleaning after the welding process before it goes to the paint shop. At the end of the day, the damaged box, pull wires, and a little slag on the finish were not enough of an issue for me to give this hitch a less than stellar rating. It's well worth the money and I will recommend etrailer.com to others. 414149

Got the hitch on, today, without any help. Being almost 70, I don't have the stamina to hold anything of this weight up from under the vehicle. I used rope (yellow in the pics) to raise the hitch, winch like, from the rear, side mount holes on both sides. Used the jack to balance the receiver end. Once it was close, I got the front carriage bolt set, and worked the hitch up to it. After that, the other side went the same way. Got the side holes aligned, once the front bolts were snug, using the jack. Took a few hours, working very carefully. Had to get the muffler out of the way. Really easy with the way (ala the old VWs) they make the rubber hangers. 80240

I purchased a hitch and wiring harness kit. The hitch had a real nice finish, fit perfectly, had a wonderful hardware and installation kit and went on in about 20 minutes. The wiring harness took a little longer to install but again was a real nice quality kit, went on in an hour and worked perfectly. The price was in line with the competition but the quality was better than others I have tried. I highly recommend etrailer.com and their products !!! Their customer follow up was great also!!! 202260

Has it been a year? Wow! You know I've moved 2 times in that year. A process made much easier by the fact that I have a hitch on my ride now. As an engineer and past mechanic I have always tried to find ways to make the installation easier. With this system and the installation instructions the only thing I found was the bolt leader wires. I added a small piece of yellow wire insulation to the end so it was easy to see and pull through the holes. This was the easiest thing I have installed on a vehicle in a long time. Kudos to e-trailer for price, quick shipping, and if installation takes longer than an hour, you’re drinking to much beer. 639464

It would be helpful if the trailer hitches came with instructions on how to install them. You tube is not always clear on the steps. I am going to have to pay a mechanic to install it. The hitch itself is nice. 639150

I've also added links to installation videos of these hitches for you to take a look at. Please keep in mind that if you already have a factory hitch the Curt # 13650 will not be a fit. To add a 4-way to power your trailer's lights you need Wiring Harness...

  • What is Towing Capacity of 2012 Ford Escape with Draw Tite Hitch 75751 Installed
  • The Draw Tite hitch part # 75751 has a towing capacity of 4,500 lbs so as long as your 2012 Ford Escape has at least the same capacity as this you'd be able to tow up to 4,500 lbs. My research on your vehicle states it would only have a capacity of 1,500 lbs so even with this hitch installed you'd be limited to that as it's the weakest component.

  • Availability of 2 Inch Hitch to Fit 2009 Ford Escape with Factory Class II Tow Package and Hitch
  • We have two Class III 2-inch hitches that will fit underneath the OEM 1-1/4 inch hitch. One from Curt, # C13651, and one from Draw-Tite, # 75751. Either of these hitches will fit just fine with the factory hitch. However, you cannot use both the Class III hitch and the OEM Class II at the same time. It would put too much stress on the vehicle frame.

  • Recommended Wiring and Trailer Hitch for 2012 Ford Escape
  • Based on the picture of the plug you found pinned beneath the rear bumper, and also considering that there is not a factory trailer hitch installed on your vehicle, I do not believe you have a factory tow package for your 2012 Ford Escape. I am not sure what the connector might be used for, but you can use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to see if it is active and what their functions might be. You can also visit your local Ford dealer with the VIN and they will be able to tell you exactly...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2012 Ford Escape
  • We do offer several hitches that are confirmed to fit your 2012 Ford Escape. Of all the hitches we offer I recommend the Draw-Tite Hitch, part # 75751. This hitch is a Class lll hitch with a 2 inch receiver opening. When I checked out the photos of the hitches we offer that fit your Escape, this one appears to be the least conspicuous. Due to the design of the vehicles it is difficult to find a hitch that is really concealed. If you plan on towing with your Escape, I recommend...
