Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're going to be going over the CURT base rail lock for fifth wheel trailer hitches. So, if you're one of those people who like to leave their fifth wheel hitch in the truck bed permanently, you can certainly do that. These fifth wheel hitches are very heavy so it's not something you really want to be moving in and out of your truck each day, or each time you get done towing. So a lot of people actually just leave them in the truck bed permanently, they may even get a tunnel cover to protect them from the elements. However, we still are going to be vulnerable by leaving the fifth wheel hitch in the truck bed there if we ever leave our truck unattended. Although I don't think everyone's going to be capable to come up in the truck bed, remove the pins, pull the fifth wheel hitch out, and take off down the road with it, I certainly wouldn't put it past everyone.
Therefore, we need a way to secure the fifth wheel hitch in the truck bed here, so we don't have to worry about someone taking off with it. How do we do that They really don't make a lot of different locks for this purpose, but CURT, thankfully, just came up with one that works very well. So here is CURT's solution here to locking the fifth wheel hitch into the rails of the truck bed here. You can see, we have our standard half inch diameter pin, which all fifth wheels use to secure to the rails. This is much longer than most pins as well to help extend it past the outside of the legs there, so we can then clamp on our locking mechanism.
Now this thing kinda looks plastic from the photos I will say, but this thing's actually made of metal, it's very sturdy. It's got quite a bit of weight to it. So this is definitely something that would be pretty hard to get into. Even drilling the lock would probably be quite a bit of a chore. So I don't think anyone's gonna come up here with a hammer and be able to break this thing.
This is a very secure and sturdy lock. But basically, how this works is, what we're gonna do is, we're gonna be removing one of our pins, it doesn't matter which one we do. I like to use the ones in front here, cause they're a little bit more accessible. This also brings up a good point is, now these locks I wouldn't say they're necessarily cheap, but they're not super expensive either. Nonetheless, we don't wanna have to buy four of them to lock each side down.
Due to the way these fifth wheel hitches are designed, with just one lock in place you'll be able to secure the entire hitch to the rails. You don't need to purchase one of these for each of your four pins. But with that being said, we're gonna take our extended pin here with the bent side facing in. We're gonna line it up through the rail there and through the hitch. Now we're gonna take our locking assembly here. We'll simply place that in until we hear it lock into place, it should click. Then we can just simply remove our key and cover the lock core with the cap. So you can see here, we have quite a bit of room. This extended pin design there is gonna allow this to clear on most fifth wheel hitches. So then maybe we're done towing for the season and we do wanna take the fifth wheel hitch out of the truck bed. Maybe once a year isn't too much, just on and off season. It's pretty easy to remove this lock. You're simply going to remove the rubber cover here, this actually has a built-in keeper around the locking mechanism so it's not something you have to misplace. Then we'll just simply take our key here, insert it, and an eighth of a turn, we should be able to remove that and just slide the lock right off. It's that easy. I mean the pen just simply comes out like so. So, if you leave your fifth wheel hitch out open to the elements, or you ever tow in any inclement weather, we'd be happy to note that the lock core housing here has a black powder coated finish, and the lock core is also covered with a rubber plug. Therefore, we don't have to worry about any dirt or water getting in there, possibly seizing up the lock, or rusting, or corroding the body. So our lock does come with two keys here so we can keep on our key ring. I recommend keeping the other one in the house, maybe in the truck in case you lose one. However, if you misplace the second one, what you guys wanna do is, as soon as you get your keys there's gonna be a key code written on the actual keys. You wanna write that down somewhere and store it in a safe place, because if you did ever misplace both sets you'd be able to reach out to the manufacturer and obtain a replacement set of keys using this number. And that's gonna do it today for our look and installation of the CURT base rail lock for fifth wheel trailer hitches..

Steel pin with powder coated aluminum housing. Includes 2 keys.I always like etrailer and there quality products, I always use curt products because they are well built, tough, and excellent quality, and a very good price.
I used this on my super glide 5th wheel hitch. My truck didn’t have the puck system so I had to install rails for my hitch. There was not enough room to put the lock on the rear two holes so I put it on the front pin. Works just fine and easy to insert key when un-locking.
Too bad 1 star is as low as you can go. Used 1 time, and now it won’t unlock!! It’s useless! Do t buy this product!

I hate to hear that the lock is not working for you. Has the lock been in place for a long time? I reached out to Curt and they gave the advice to soak the lock cylinder and inside the key hole with PB blaster, then slowly work the key in an out then back and forth. The lock likely has build up from weather and road grime.
with the curt crossing 5th wheel hitch so light and easy to remove I decided that this is a must for security of my hitch.
As a devoted Curt hitch customer who pretty much keeps my 5th wheel hitch mounted on the rails, having this lock will provide a little more piece of mind that the hitch will stay in the truck. PS., my local Curt dealer stocked these lock but at a much higher price.
I loved it now I don’t have to worry bout my 5th wheel hitch being stolen
