Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - TTWSF48012C Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number TTWSF48012C. This is the Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with a Load Range C. The bias ply tire's going to be great for agricultural and off-road use. It's going to feature the stiffer side walls, that's going to allow the entire tire to flex easily. It's constructed with criss-cross layers of strong nylon cords for strength and durability and it's going to to provide a nice, smooth ride on uneven surfaces. One of the things I want to point out is around the perimeter of the tire, it's going to to feature tread-depth bars. Those are going to to offer a quick, visual indicator of tread ware on our tire.

This unit does meet Department of Transportation specifications and it exceeds FMVSS requirements. This unit's designed to fit your rims that measure a diameter of 12 inches and a width of 4 inches. The tire size itself is 4.80-12. It's going to give us a section width from outer edge to outer edge of 4.75 inches or 4 and three-quarters of an inch. The outer diameter from edge to edge when fully inflated is going to be 20 and a half inches. The tire again is going to have a load range of C with a 6 ply rating.

It's rated for a maximum load of 990 pounds and 90 psi and it's rated for a maximum speed of 81 miles per hour. Nice tread design, again bias ply tire, load range C. That's going to to do it for today's review of part number TTWSF48012C.

After one year of use I probably have 3000 miles on these jet ski trailer tires. They were the highest speed rated Tire of the size I could find. They have done well. I remember being a little freaked out when I got them in the mail because three of them fit in a box the size of a small slim TV and they look like bicycle tires uninflated. spent an additional $40 having them professionally mounted at a local Goodyear dealer. 525078

I called etrailer and ordering these tires was fast and simple. I chose these tires as they have a higher speed rating than other brands of the same size. All three Tires arrived in a large box and I took them down to have them mounted as these size tires are very difficult to mount without an Air Blast nozzle. I watched the guys at the tire shop try to inflate them like a normal Tire and they were having a hard time they broke out a large hose with some type of attachment and held it against the bead and blew air into the tire and then they beaded up. I have not put many miles on the tires so I cannot speak as to the quality and longevity. I was expecting tires made recently however the DOT numbers on the tire indicated they were 2016 so these were two years old already upon arrival. 517332

At the time of this review the tires have about 900 miles on them. Most of the miles in the 60-70mph range. Purchased these tires for the 81mph speed rating. The 90psi air pressure usually has to be checked and some air added every few weeks. Over all the tires seem to be very good tires thus far. The previous tires had 7+ years of service. I am hoping these tires do as well. 409265

The only complaint that I have, is how the tires were packaged and shipped, leaving the tires hard to get the bead to seal to the wheel. 394882

Got these tires for their 81 MPH rating. After about 2000 miles a large patch of rubber separated from the tire. Two weeks later the tire on the other side did the same thing. The Taskmaster rep said I must have hit something that cut the tread but I think the tread separated from the inner ply. Two tires in two weeks with the same problem seems like more than coincidence. Luckily I noticed both holes before they blew out. The third tire of the set I bought from you will never be on the ground. I won't even trust it as a spare. 581795

I haven’t even opened the box yet. But let me tell you WHY I purchased these tires. I’ve had two blowouts on my golf cart trailer. Yes, I run it fast. Usually around 70-75 mph. And these tires are rated at over 81 mph! I’ve got to give them a try. 721619

Very good value. Broke Springs on a small center console tender trailer, thought OH boy how am I gonna find parts for this. Searched on-line. Found etrailer and BAM = problem solved. Got springs, shackles, bolts, even an entire spare and tire for a couple hundred bucks and THEY ALL FIT and at least as good quality as the thing was build with. Excellent and pretty quick shipping and delivery for heavy stuff. 711535

  • Replacement 4.80-12 Sized Tires for Malone MircroSport Trailer
We actually carry the spare tire that fits the Malone MicroSport Trailer # MPG460G. The spare is # MPG465 and does have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. With that being said it would be more cost effective for you to purchase two 4.80-12 trailer tires, like # TTWSF48012C, and have them mounted to the existing rims. If you need valve stems, # AM20904 will handle the 80 psi needed for these tires. I recommend these Taskmasters because they have an 81 mph speed rating, which is higher than...

When trailer tires are not speed rated with a letter, the default is 65 mph max. I've attached an article to assist. If you want a speed rating higher, then for that tire size I recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 12" Silver Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AT12R45SM or # AT12R45WS. These are rated for speeds up to 81 mph. If...

Both tire sizes you mentioned will fit the same dimension wheels. 12 inch diameter wheels that are 4 inches in width. The tire I would go with is the part # TTWSF48012C which is one of the sizes you would need and has a speed rating of 81 mph like you said you were interested in. For a wheel and tire with this tire we have the part # TTWA12WM which has a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and then we also have the part # TTWAA12WS which has a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inch.

We do carry that tire size in a Load Range C like the part # TTWSF48012C which would be my recommendation. This the best choice as it has a higher speed rating than most tires at 81 mph. Then for a spare tire carrier we have the part # FSTC1000301 which would work well. A tire of size 4.80 - 12 has an overall diameter of 20-1/2-inches and is approximately 4-inches wide. For a cover for that size you would want # CE27410.

  • Replacement High-Speed Tires for 4.80-12 Tires on Boat Trailer
The term "high-speed" tires on the sidewall really isn't a good indicator of the speed rating for your current tires because manufacturers have been changing (increasing) the safe speed for tires in the recent past. So if your tires are old enough then they could be rated for 65 mph which used to be known as fast. Since you are looking to replace your current tires and you are looking into options that are rated for higher speeds I recommend using the Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer...

They also have a Load Range C or 990 pounds at 90 psi. There won't be a need to replace your hubs or wheels but you may need higher rated valve stems if yours won't support the 90 psi. If you need them we have # AM20907 which are rated up to 100 psi.

The capacity listed on a tire is per tire so for two tires with the same capacity you would double that capacity. Going to higher rated tires will not increase the capacity of the trailer because the axle, suspension, and other components would limit the trailer capacity. The tires being 10 years old and cracked should be replaced for sure. The wheels might be fine especially if they are corroding or damaged in any way. So you may not need wheels. Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. • What is the Difference in Load Ranges for 12 Inch Trailer Tires
Any given tire size can have more than one load range. The load range represents the ply rating for a tire size and the higher the ply rating the higher the capacity of the tire. Plies are the structural components inside a tire. A tire can have fewer physical plies than its ply rating. This is due to the strength of the materials used to make the plies. • Recommended Replacement Trailer Tires Size 4.80-12 on Boat Trailer
It is recommended to replace both tires on the same axle at the same time. This is due to wear patterns on the tires. You should always use tires of the same size, load range, and construction on a trailer. If you use tires that don't match, you could experience problems of overloading and overheating, which can lead to tire failure. I do not recommend using the size 5.30-12 tire on your trailer. Their should be a plate up near the coupler that states the overall capacities.
