Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - TTWSF48012C Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number TTWSF48012C. This is the Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with a Load Range C. The bias ply tire's going to be great for agricultural and off-road use. It's going to feature the stiffer side walls, that's going to allow the entire tire to flex easily. It's constructed with criss-cross layers of strong nylon cords for strength and durability and it's going to to provide a nice, smooth ride on uneven surfaces. One of the things I want to point out is around the perimeter of the tire, it's going to to feature tread-depth bars. Those are going to to offer a quick, visual indicator of tread ware on our tire.

This unit does meet Department of Transportation specifications and it exceeds FMVSS requirements. This unit's designed to fit your rims that measure a diameter of 12 inches and a width of 4 inches. The tire size itself is 4.80-12. It's going to give us a section width from outer edge to outer edge of 4.75 inches or 4 and three-quarters of an inch. The outer diameter from edge to edge when fully inflated is going to be 20 and a half inches. The tire again is going to have a load range of C with a 6 ply rating.

It's rated for a maximum load of 990 pounds and 90 psi and it's rated for a maximum speed of 81 miles per hour. Nice tread design, again bias ply tire, load range C. That's going to to do it for today's review of part number TTWSF48012C.

Just what I ordered. Hopefully I will not need the spare soon. 424427

Got these tires for their 81 MPH rating. After about 2000 miles a large patch of rubber separated from the tire. Two weeks later the tire on the other side did the same thing. The Taskmaster rep said I must have hit something that cut the tread but I think the tread separated from the inner ply. Two tires in two weeks with the same problem seems like more than coincidence. Luckily I noticed both holes before they blew out. The third tire of the set I bought from you will never be on the ground. I won't even trust it as a spare. 581795

After one year of use I probably have 3000 miles on these jet ski trailer tires. They were the highest speed rated Tire of the size I could find. They have done well. I remember being a little freaked out when I got them in the mail because three of them fit in a box the size of a small slim TV and they look like bicycle tires uninflated. spent an additional $40 having them professionally mounted at a local Goodyear dealer. 525078

The only complaint that I have, is how the tires were packaged and shipped, leaving the tires hard to get the bead to seal to the wheel. 394882

I called etrailer and ordering these tires was fast and simple. I chose these tires as they have a higher speed rating than other brands of the same size. All three Tires arrived in a large box and I took them down to have them mounted as these size tires are very difficult to mount without an Air Blast nozzle. I watched the guys at the tire shop try to inflate them like a normal Tire and they were having a hard time they broke out a large hose with some type of attachment and held it against the bead and blew air into the tire and then they beaded up. I have not put many miles on the tires so I cannot speak as to the quality and longevity. I was expecting tires made recently however the DOT numbers on the tire indicated they were 2016 so these were two years old already upon arrival. 517332

At the time of this review the tires have about 900 miles on them. Most of the miles in the 60-70mph range. Purchased these tires for the 81mph speed rating. The 90psi air pressure usually has to be checked and some air added every few weeks. Over all the tires seem to be very good tires thus far. The previous tires had 7+ years of service. I am hoping these tires do as well. 409265

These tires have not gotten much use in the past year. That said they were used on long trips 600 + miles and preformed very well at highway speeds 70-75 mph with no problems. 523440

So far I’ve been very happy with this set of tires. I purchased them because of the higher speed rating over similar sized tires. They have about 1500 miles on them so far and seem to be wearing well. 499715

From the initial order through the delivery at my front door, the process could not have been easier. The tire was delivered in a solid cardboard container preventing any damage in shipping. Mounted the next day and back on the road we were. Etrailer has my highest reccomendation and will receive my business from here on out. 228069

I have a full set of bias ply tires on my Road King torsion axle trailer (2 axles - 4 wheels). As I have not bought this brand before let's wait and see until I have a couple of thousand miles on them before fully signing off on an opinion. For the time being I'll give them a "GOOD". 241182

Bought this instead of radial based on E trailer advise. It performed very well on rough Mexican roads 4400 kms. Showing wear signs but that's likely normal on small rims. Highway at 60 mph no issues. My friend shredded 2 radial trailer sidewalls on one two hour rough Mexican dirt road, construction rocky section so I was glad I followed etrailers recommendation. 453314

This is a replacement tire. I used the same make and designation to match other trailer tires. Pep Boys did the mounting for about $17 on the old rim (install, check balance, valve stem and old tire disposal). These newer tires have the speed rating on them with an excellent 81 MPH. Which is better than the competitors with the same tire designation. The other manufactures had a speed rating of 65 MPH. The five star rating is based upon the cost, timely deliver and that it mounted and balanced without any issues. Thanks etrailer! 437239

I had to order 2 new trailer tires and wanted the same brand that was on it already. I discovered etrailer.com and noticed they carry the exact tire I was looking for. I was kind of in a hurry for the tires and was hoping they could get them to me quickly. They do have super fast shipping and the tires showed up just in time. I've ordered lots of tires in my lifetime and this is the first time I've had tires delivered in a box. Each tire was in it's own box. I thought that was pretty cool. To me, it shows they care about their product. Thanks for the fast shipping and the extra care you take delivering tires. 209286

Quick and simple ordering process; I chose free shipping, thinking I'd get this pair of tires in 2 weeks, but they arrived in 6 days and it was easy to check their progress from halfway across the country. As for the tires: these are an exact match for those that came with my dual axle trailer, which we are using for timber and milling work in the Midwest--some 1500 miles away, so these bias ply tires have seen a load of interstate miles--currently 22,000-- as well as off-road timber work, and they have held up well. My trailer manufacturer has moved to radial tires (supposedly better for the highway), but I was pleased to find these priced right at etrailer. Class operation; will order from them again. 333175

Comments

No problems this set is right at 18,000 miles about 98 highway and interstate use back and forth to Midwest and twice to East Coast. Should replace the original pair on the other axle which are getting smooth. Will do that at etrailer, of course. Thanks.

Don't buy these tires. I purchased these as a cheap tire to put on a boat trailer that I rarely use. The tires arrived extremely warped and distorted. It was impossible to get the bead to seat on the rim. I tried using a big air compressor, I tried using a strap around the tires, I tried using the explosive method, I tried using the cheater tank, I took them to professional tire shops. I ended up having to put inner tubes inside these tubeless tires just to get them to seat on the bead. I would have been much better ahead to have not incured the $40 cost of the intertubes, and also not have incurred the hours of frustration and running around to tire shops. Don't buy these tires, it's false economy. Spend more money and get a premium quality tire. I'm very happy with E-trailer. I'm just not happy with these tires. 304893

These tires work as expected. I was not able to mount them myself at home (I mount my own motorcycle tires), but a local tire shop handled that just fine for a small fee. I trailer my bikes to race tracks, and have had no issues with these, wet or dry roads. Of course, I'm not flying along when pulling a trailer. 348336

  • Replacement 4.80-12 Sized Tires for Malone MircroSport Trailer
  • We actually carry the spare tire that fits the Malone MicroSport Trailer # MPG460G. The spare is # MPG465 and does have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. With that being said it would be more cost effective for you to purchase two 4.80-12 trailer tires, like # TTWSF48012C, and have them mounted to the existing rims. If you need valve stems, # AM20904 will handle the 80 psi needed for these tires. I recommend these Taskmasters because they have an 81 mph speed rating, which is higher than...

  • Recommended 4.80-12 Trailer Tire for Higher Speed Driving
  • All of our 4.80-12 size trailer tires and tires-with-wheels are shown on the linked page. For higher-speed highway travel I suggest the 81-mph-rated Load Range C Tasksmaster tire # TTWSF48012C which is rated to carry 990-lbs at 90 psi. Always run your trailer tires at the full psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire as doing so reduces its load capacity and increases chances for heat-related failure.

When trailer tires are not speed rated with a letter, the default is 65 mph max. I've attached an article to assist. If you want a speed rating higher, then for that tire size I recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 12" Silver Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AT12R45SM or # AT12R45WS. These are rated for speeds up to 81 mph. If...

For a wheel and tire with this tire we have the part # TTWA12WM which has a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and then we also have the part # TTWAA12WS which has a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inch.

  • Replacement 4.80-12 Trailer Tires and Wheels for a Boat Trailer
  • The capacity listed on a tire is per tire so for two tires with the same capacity you would double that capacity. Going to higher rated tires will not increase the capacity of the trailer because the axle, suspension, and other components would limit the trailer capacity. The tires being 10 years old and cracked should be replaced for sure. The wheels might be fine especially if they are corroding or damaged in any way. So you may not need wheels. • What is the Difference in Load Ranges for 12 Inch Trailer Tires
  • Any given tire size can have more than one load range. The load range represents the ply rating for a tire size and the higher the ply rating the higher the capacity of the tire. Plies are the structural components inside a tire. A tire can have fewer physical plies than its ply rating. This is due to the strength of the materials used to make the plies. Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. Then for a spare tire carrier we have the part # FSTC1000301 which would work well. A tire of size 4.80 - 12 has an overall diameter of 20-1/2-inches and is approximately 4-inches wide. If you need them we have # AM20907 which are rated up to 100 psi.

  • Cause for Failure of 4.80-12 Trailer Tires That Are Not Overloaded or Incorrectly Inflated
  • Heat is the cause for most trailer tire failures, and that heat can come from any of three causes: incorrect inflation pressure (high or low), overloading the tire beyond its weight capacity or by driving too fast for the tire. All three conditions cause excess heat and can lead to failure. In your tire size 4.80-12 we have only Load Range B and Load Range C tires and tire/wheel combinations. Both our tires in this size and our tires/wheels with your 4-on-4 bolt patterns can be seen...

  • Recommendations for Tires That Will fit a 12 or 13 inch Wheel and Are Rated for at Least 70 mph
  • Since the only tire that we have that fits a 12 inch wheel and is rated for up to 81 mph is a bias tire, part # TTWSF48012C, I recommend going with a tire that fits a 13 inch wheel. There is nothing wrong with a bias tire; it's just that radial tires will run cooler on the highway than bias tires will. The 3 tires that we have which fit a 13 inch wheel and are rated for at least 70 mph are the Provider # TTWTRTM1758013C, Contender # C17513C, and the Westlake # LHWL101. Both the Provider...

  • Replacement 4.80-12 Bias Ply Trailer Tires for Boat Trailer
  • We can offer you three choices in a 4.80-12 bias ply type trailer tire for your boat trailer. All can be seen on the link provided. We have both Load Range B tire # AM10060, rated for 785-lbs at 60-psi pressure, and Load Range C tires # AM10062 and # TTWSF48012C, both of which are rated for 900-lbs at 90-psi pressure. All three carry a 2-year limited warranty. Trailer tires should always be fully inflated to their maximum psi pressure rating as noted on the tire sidewall. It is never...

  • Higher Speed Rating Tire Recommendation for Size 4.80-12
  • Not all trailer tires have the same speed ratings. Most are only rated for 65 but of the brands we carry Taskmaster tires are rated for 81 and Lionshead 75 mph. For your tire size of 4.80-12 we only have one tire with a higher speed rating and that is a Taskmaster # TTWSF48012C which is rated for 81 mph.

  • Is Width and Overall Diameter Of Size 4.80x12 Tires Standard
  • Not all 4.80 -12 size tires have the same tire width or overall diameter, though they are very similar. We carry 4 different 4.80-12 size tires, and those these measurements are very close, they are not all the same. The Kenda K353 Load Range C # AM10062 measures a section width of 4.9 inches, and has an outer diameter when inflated of 20.7 inches. The Kenda K353 Load Range B # AM10060 measures a section width of 4.8 inches, and has an outer diameter when inflated of 20.5 inches....

  • Would the Taskmaster Tires TTWSF48012C Have Enough Tire Capacity for a 1,500 lb Trailer
  • Based on tire capacity alone, yes with two of the # TTWSF48012C you would have 1,800 lbs of tire capacity so a 1,500 lb trailer would be no problem at all. You will need to make sure the tires are inflated to their 90 psi max capacity to ensure that you get the full capacity. You will need to be sure your trailer has enough capacity as well. Their should be a plate up near the coupler that states the overall capacities.

  • Trailer Tire in Size 4.80-12 that is Rated for 75 MPH
  • In the tire size of 4.80-12 we have one tire that is rated for up to 81 mph, part # TTWSF48012C. Most are only rated for 65 and we wouldn't be able to recommend you exceeding that. What you'd want to do is check the sidewall of the tire for the speed rating. If you need to go 75 and your tire says lower you'd have to get the part # TTWSF48012C.

  • Recommended Replacement Trailer Tires Size 4.80-12 on Boat Trailer
  • It is recommended to replace both tires on the same axle at the same time. This is due to wear patterns on the tires. You should always use tires of the same size, load range, and construction on a trailer. If you use tires that don't match, you could experience problems of overloading and overheating, which can lead to tire failure. I do not recommend using the size 5.30-12 tire on your trailer. I do not recommend sizing up from the 4.80-12 size tires currently on your trailer....

  • Can 13 Inch Trailer Tires and Wheels be Used in Place of 4.80-12 Tires and Wheels
  • In terms of the space you have available between the fenders and the tire tread you could go to a 13 inch tire (there isn't a 4.80-13 so it would have to be an ST175/80R13). But the 13 inch tire will be 2.22 inches wider than what you have now meaning the tire inner sidewall will be 1.11 inches closer to the trailer. If you have more than 1.11 inches between the existing inner sidewall and the trailer frame/body then you can go with a 13 inch tire by also switching to 13 inch wheels. If...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size 4.80-12 that Can do Highway Speeds
  • I do have a great solution for you, but if you exceed the speed rating of a trailer tire it will get too hot and will very easily fail. I can't safely recommend you exceed the speed rating of your tire by 10 mph for 200 miles. Instead the tire part # TTWSF48012C is a 4.80-/4.00-12 tire like you need but with an 81 mph speed rating. This will easily let you cruise at 70 mph.

  • Can Taskmaster Tire with M Speed Rating Go Over Standard 65 MPH Speed Rating
  • The M rating on the Taskmaster # TTWSF48012C tire means that it is rated for speeds up to 81 miles per hour. This means the tire can exceed the traditional 65 mph speed rating.

  • Recommended 4.80-12 Trailer Tires for Off-Road Use
  • Since you will be traveling off-road you will want to use a bias trailer tire instead of a radial trailer tire because bias tires have a stiffer sidewall which is advantageous for off-road use. The 4.80-12 trailer tires I highly recommend are the Taskmaster # TTWSF48012C because of their reliability and the tread depth bar that will let you know how much wear the tires have taken. This will make it easy for you to know when it is time for replacements, lessening the chance of you having...

  • Tire Upgrade for Small Utility Trailer with 4.80-12 Tires that Are only Rated for 55 MPH
  • I checked out the trailer you mentioned and it has the tire size of 4.80-12 which we have the Taskmaster tire part # TTWSF48012C in that size that has an 81 mph speed rating. This would be the best solution available for increasing the speed rating of your trailer. Trailer weight capacity is a combination of the frame strength, axle strength, brake strength, tire strength, coupler etc.

  • Troubleshooting Tread Wear in Center of 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
  • The inflation is not the issue on your trailer tires and you are correct to always run trailer tires at their max psi when filled cold (prior to trip). With the tread in the middle wearing faster than the outside edges, the only issue if this is premature has to do with heat. Most likely this is due to speeds exceeding the speed rating on your tires or overloading. If there is not a speed rating listed on your tires, than 65 mph max is what is standard. For your replacements, I...
