Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

size was right. delivery fast. tire life..low.. for trailer tires most brands including this are only good for 5k-10k miles.. I put around 15-20k miles on my trailer per year. it would be great to trailer tires lasted longer. for a boat trailer that is hauled to lake a couple weekends a month. they might be great tires. I use them on my work trailer..daily. hence the 15-20k miles per year 508318

I prefer to deal with etrailer, they've sent exactly what I've ordered every time and for the price I was quoted. I tried to use Walmart one time for the trailer tires, the order kept getting changed and cancelled. They ended up telling me they couldn't sell those tires and ship for the price they advertised. I waisted 3 weeks dealing with that. Etrailer had the same tires on my porch in less than a week 344875

I have had these Kenda tires on my dual axle trailer for over 10 years with no problems. They were the original equipment provided on Cargopro trailers manufactured in Maine. When they finally needed to be replaced, I read reviews for other name brand manufacturers and thought, why would I ever buy tires that most people didn't get more than three years life? I searched the web, found Etrailer.com, their prices were very reasonable and they shipped the same day I placed my order. Their service was great, the tires arrived in three days, they are installed and ride smoothly. Thanks to Rebecca for all of your help! 167851

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

Know the load-range requirements of your trailer. On my trailer, the factory label calls for "Load-Range C" tires. This is not correct, and I can't believe the manufacturer even suggested them. According to the trailer specs, my trailer has a maximum weight of 7,500 lbs. ST205/75R14 trailer tires in load-range C are only rated for a dual-axle load of 1,570 pounds. That is a total of 6,280 pounds with 4 tires. However, in load-range D, the maximum dual-axle capacity is 1,930 pounds. That is a total of 7,720 pounds, or a better match to the rated capacity of the axle and trailer. Therefore, I am very glad that I switched to these Kenda tires, and I am optimistic that I will get much better service life from them than what I had before. 666707

This tire will be used as a replacement on my boat trailer. I'd been waiting for over 3 weeks to receive this make tire from a dealer in the Cleveland Ohio area. I canceled the order after speaking with Natalie, who, by the way is a wonderful customer service representative. Then, I received the tire 2 days later! Great company and excellent service!! When I need tires again I'll call. Thanks Natalie 656281

These tires are NICE tires! Taller than I expected, which is ok , because I put these tires on my little camper and gave it more ground clearance. I bought these tires because we pull our camper long distances and the bias tires were blowing out quite a bit. I haven't taken out my camper yet for a trial run but hoping these will give me what I need when we travel. 658958

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

Overall I’m kind of disappointed. I ordered expecting to get at least new-ish tires but got 2 year-old tires. All appeared to be manufactured in the middle of 2017. Most of the information I’ve seen about trailer tires says to replace every five years regardless of what the tread looks like. (I’ve seen 6-7 years on this site.) If that’s the case, two years, or a quarter or more of my tire life is potentially done already. 666932

Comments

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured more than a year before we received them. With the exception of the Goodyear Endurance, these tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can easily take a month or more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

So happy to get these tires for my boat trailer. The radial tires will give better service than the bias tires. They replaced 4.80 X 12 Bias tires. The radials also handle more pounds per tire than the bias. Also, I have at least 8 sets of wheels so I went to the local nationwide department store and their auto department took off the old tires and mounted the new tires for $5.00 each. 616869

Great deal on a really good set of tires. I chanced my stock China Bomb tires on my travel trailer for 3+ years. I had to order some reliable rubber for my upcoming 5000+ mile trip. etrailer.com had a great price, fast shipping, and most importantly, individually boxed. I’ve ordered tires from other internet shops and had them arrived banded together for who knows how long. 604701

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

Tires arrived in good condition in three days, individually boxed. Had them mounted today on my Lance travel trailer and they look great, much better than the Tow-Max tires they are replacing. Only minor surprise was that the DOT date code on the tires indicates the tires were manufactured around mid 2017. Nevertheless, they look great and I am confident my BAD experiences (three) with "Blow-Max" brand tires are over. Concerning etrailer, this is one of many purchases I've made over the past 10 years and I have always been impressed with the EXCELLENT customer service, product information and instructive videos, communications, pricing, and product selection. IMHO etrailer is one of the best retailers on the web and I highly recommend them to all. 653723

  • How to Select Correct Trailer Tire Size and Load Range Weight Capacity

  • Since the 205 is the tallest you can go I recommend sticking with the ST205/75-15 size. We have many options for the size but only 2 for radial constructed tires. For a load range C, rated for 1,820 pounds at 50 psi, use # AM10244. And for a load range D rated for 2,150 pounds at 50 psi use # AM10245. I have included a link to our help article on trailer tires for you.

  • What Will be the Right Tire Pressure for Load Star ST205/75R15
  • The tire size you mentioned indicate a radial tire, though the Loadstar tires are bias. However, the tire pressure is still going to depend on the load range of the tire. For example, the Karrier ST205/75R15, # AM10244, with a load rating of C, has a maximum load capacity of 1,820 lbs at 50 psi. Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D, # AM10245, has a maximum load of 2,150 lbs at 65 psi, and Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E, # AM10303, has a maximum...

  • Can I Swap 205/75-15 Tires with 235/80-16 Tires on Dual Axle Trailer
  • The 235/80-16 tires will be about 3.6 inches in diameter larger than a 205/75-15 tires. Half that difference (1.8 inches) is how much closer the tire would be to the fender. When fully loaded, you will want to see no less than 3 inches of clearance between the top of the tire and the underside of the fender when the trailer is loaded. So, unless you currently have about 4.8 inches of clearance between the top of your existing tire and the underside of the fender, you'd be in danger of bottoming...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Tire Cupping
  • When you have cupping wear on a tire it is from the tire bouncing on the road. You will want to check the air pressure in the tire and make sure you are running the maximum air pressure that is indicated on the tire. Then, I would recommend to have the tires and wheels balanced. Another thing to check is the suspension parts on the trailer. When suspension parts begin to wear and get loose it can cause the tire to hop when being towed and cause the cupping pattern.

  • Finding the Bolt Hole Pattern of a Trailer Wheel and Measuring a Trailer Tire
  • The Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C, # AM10244, is just a tire (pictured on a wheel). We do have wheels with tires, or just wheels. I have provided the links below for each for a 15 inch wheel. To determine the correct wheel, there are a few things to look at. One is the bolt hole pattern. I have provided a link to an FAQ article that explains how to find the bolt hole pattern. You will also want to look at the tire size and load range for the wheel. I have...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace a F78-15
  • The modern tire size equivalent to your F78-15 is the size ST205/75-15 like the part # AM10245. This is a Load Range D tire with the capacity of 2,150 lbs at 65 psi. For a Load Range C in this size you would want the part # AM10244 instead. This tire has a capacity of 1,820 lbs at 50 psi. As long as you go with a tire that has enough weight capacity for your trailer when loaded it doesn't matter which Load Range you go with. You should note that trailer tires should always be inflated...

  • Replacement Trailer Tires Needed for a Trailer with H78-15-LT Tires
  • Your trailer tires work out roughly to be the same size as a 225/70-15 tire or a 215/80-15 tire. By my calculations the 225/70-15 tire is 27.4 inches tall and 8.9 inches wide and the 215/80-15 tire is 28.6 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide. The LT designation on your tires is for light truck applications and you would be better off using ST (special trailer) tires that are designed for use on trailers. We do not have an exact match to the above mentioned tire sizes but we do have two...

  • Compatible Modern Tire Size for 8.25-15 and 7.75-15 Size Tires
  • The tire sizes you mention are considered to be obsolete sizes. The 8.25-15 tire would have an 8-1/4 inch width and a diameter around 28-1/2 inches. The 7.75-15 tire would be around 7-3/4 inches wide with an approximate diameter of 27-3/4 inches. The closest modern tire size to the 8.25-15 would be a ST225/75-15, available in bias ply load range D as part # AM1ST96, or in radial load range D as part # AM10256 or load range C as part # AM10251. A ST225/75-15 would be about the same diameter...

  • Travel Trailer Tires for 25 Foot Tandem Axle Trailer with ST205/75-15 Tires
  • It is best to stick with the tire size recommended by the trailer manufacturer. This information should be on a sticker or plate on the trailer tongue or frame somewhere. Since the trailer weighs or is rated at 6,000 pounds, I recommend going with load range C ST205/75-15 tires if that is what the trailer manufacturer requires. Use # AM10244 for a radial or # AM1ST92 for a bias ply tire. Each is rated for 1,820 pounds at 50 psi. I have linked our help article on trailer tires for you.

  • Recommendation for Replacing Tires on 6x10 Utility Trailers
  • The 15 at the end of the tire size for your second trailer indicates the wheel diameter that the tire is mounted on. If this trailer uses 15 inch wheels, then a 14 inch tire will not be compatible. For your trailer that uses 205/75D15 tires, I recommend staying with this same size such as the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 # AM10244. This tire has a 1,820 pound load capacity at 50 psi and includes a limited 2-year warranty. Then for your other trailer, the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14 # AM10234...

  • Recommended Tires for a 5x10 Trailer with 3,500 Lb Axle
  • The number of plies a tire has no longer has a direct correlation to the weight capacity of a tire as manufacturers have begun to use stronger material which means fewer plies and a higher weight capacity. The figure that is now used instead of plies is load range. The load range of all tires will need to exceed the gross trailer weight (GTW) of the trailer. I recommend the Karrier Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10251 if you have ST225/75-15 tires or part # AM10244 if you have ST205/75-15...

  • Plastic Fender Recommendation for Trailer and ST205/75-15 Load Range Tires
  • It looks like the Single Axle Trailer Fenders # PF11X35W-2 that you referenced would be your best option. But before you order it check out the dimensions for it in the picture that I attached so that you can compare them to your trailer. For a Load Range C tire in the ST205/75-15 size you would want the part # AM10244. This is a radial tire that would work great for you.

  • Should I Use Radial Or Bias Tires On My 1992 Prowler Travel Trailer With Tandem Axles
  • If the tire size is the ST205/75R15 Load Range C we have the Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C, # AM1ST92, which is a bias tire with a maximum load of 1,820 lbs. at 50 psi. We also have the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C, # AM10244, which is a radial tire with a maximum load of 1,820 lbs. at 50 psi. I would recommend the radial tire over the bias tire because of better stability, better ride comfort and it will also dissipate heat better....

  • Dexstar Vintage Steel Wheel Recommendation as a Spare for a 1978 Winnebago Tag Along Trailer
  • I would recommend you get a Dexstar Vintage Steel Wheel w/ 5 mm Offset # AM20501, this rim is 6 inches wide and would better match up with the current wheels that are on your 1978 Winnebago Travel Trailer. If you need a tire as well I would recommend a Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10244. I attached an FAQ article on trailer tires for you to check out.
