Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig CB-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, youll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the chains.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip and tug it until it's tight.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Feed the tensioning chain through as many red clips along the side chain as you can, leaving room to still be able to stretch the hook across the tire. Attach the hook to the side chain directly across from the last clip you ran the tensioner through. The hook should face away from your tire.

6. Drive forward around 325' (about the length of a football field) and stop. Check the chains and tighten them as needed.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Toyota Corolla

I have to say I'm extremely satisfied with these tire chains!! They're so aggressive and work well with my corolla. My at is front wheel drive and the weight of the motors sits perfectly in line with the tire/chain combination. They bite and dig right in the snow and ice. My drive way is very long as you can see and quite dangerous in snowy conditions. I've had numerous times where I've had to slip the chains on and it was a breeze. They're so easy to put on and off. I feel extremely confident throughout the winter season with the Thule tire chains in the back of my trunk. Thank you so much! You guys have great products going!

Hi, Austin. Thanks for the review. I just purchased these same chains and am wondering if you have ever had any problem with the chains scratching or damaging the rims? Thanks

I don't usually submit online reviews but in this case wow what a great company! I ordered some chains for my Lexus ct200h on a Saturday and got a real live phone call on Sunday from Erika stating the product I ordered was out of stock. She recommended these chains instead and not only were they less expensive but they arrived on Thursday just in time for a California ice storm on Friday. I had to put the chains on for the first time on my way home to my house at 5000 foot elevation. I watched the video before leaving work and as promised they went on in a breeze even with the low wheel well clearance. Great company, great product- I couldn't be happier!

2012 Honda Civic

Due to our new residence location (Big Bear Lake CA) I've been researching tire chain specs and options. My past experience was only seasonal, but now that we live here permanently I wanted the most effective design and durable materials....not only for my Jeep, but my wife's Honda. Just received both via UPS last week. Nice product and packaging. Now just waiting for the snow!

I [feel bad], I haven't practiced with putting it on. I have the miracle car for Norther Minnesota! It all depends on the township plowing schedule. If they plow in a timely manner, I can get back off highway on road. If they don't I'm spinning with my cheap Ferrari. Yeah the car is great in fall Spring, summer! (VW TDI jetta). That's not to mention my hilly divided cement 6" pads driveway with glaze. I heard wolves at 03:00 scraping concrete to get to work!
Gave you guys laugh for the day! You guys and girls, do great work! I'll get the Silverado out next time! Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

ettrailer is my go-to for online purchases on anything vehicle related.

I already have this Konig set for the minivan, and now this smaller set will secure our sedan in case anything goes wrong. My wife is a physician and needs to get to and from the hospital securely no matter what weather - people need doctors all the time. I am very pleased that etrailer shipped our chains day-of and they got here on time, in perfect condition. I can trust the products that are listed for sale on this site, and I can trust I get the best deal on shipping, and hopefully this is a good review.

Installation was simple enough for me who has no experience at all. The manual has some translational issues, but overall, just remember when threading the inside cord around the wheel, pull the rest of the chain matter through as well, then the process of tautening, spreading, and evening out the part is fairly straightforward. Save your bacon! Get chains. For $100 versus buying a car with 4WD, I think this is a great value.

2010 Toyota Corolla

Tire chains delivered earlier than expected and are even easier to put on than I thought. The plastic covered rear cable makes putting on the chains so easy and I don't have to hug a dirty wet tire. Will definitely recommend this site and use them again.

Great! Just use them last week in 24 inches of snow. Never got stuck, got me home nice and safe. No one could believe I made it.

Of course since I bought these tire chains, we have not received enough snow in my area of the country (mid-Atlantic) to actually test them under road conditions. However ...
I do recommend that you practice installing these chains BEFORE you need to use them. It is not intuitively obvious how they get installed on your tires, and the pictograph directions are not the best. The mounting system is more complex (but probably more robust and secure) than the simpler systems of 20+ years ago. You should also be aware that after first mounting the chains, the car must be driven for a short distance to take the slack out of the chains and allow them to be fully tightened. A minor annoyance, but manufacturer-recommended, so do not avoid this step.
I trial-mounted my Konigs on the front drive wheels of my Toyota Corolla. They are definitely low-profile and would allow for steering angles. Definitely a lot of Swedish steel in this product; I am sure it will get you through a Scandinavian winter. My chains always ride in my Toyota during the winter months.

Wasn't sure there'd be snow for my trip to Big Bear last year, but we ended up using the chains twice. Easy on, easy off. Highly recommend.

These Thule chains look a little light for long lasting, but time will tell. My only comment pre-use is that the directions for installation would have been just as helpful if written in Chinese.

so far so good. i spent an afternoon practicing putting them on and taking them off. got it down to about 7 minutes for both. just waiting for a nice ice storm to really try them out!

also wanted to mention the customer service from etrailer was great. they mistakenly told me my order shipped the same day when in fact the item was not in stock. the next day i got an email and a phone call apologizing and asking if i wanted a different item, a refund or just wait till the chains came in. 2 days later they arrived. they were totally on top of it. thanks...

NOTE: Ended up not needing chains, so I cannot attest to how well they would have performed. However, I did a test run and put them on the tires at home (wearing leather gloves) and was pleased with how simple it was.

2017 Toyota Corolla

These chains are easy to install. It takes only a few minutes to install them and be on the road again. You don't have to lay in the snow and/or get under the car to install them. Of course the second part is the traction they provide. The car was not safe to drive on such slippery snow pack to no problem at all.

by:

Only 4 stars bc they aren’t the fancier self adjusting version.

by:

I use the chain yesterday to bring my Nurse wife who works night shift to her work in the hospital. I live here in Long Island New York and she works in Jamaica Hospital in Queens. The chain makes it easy for me to navigate the snow. Would highly recommend to everyone who needs to be in a road in a severe weather like snow storm.
