BOLT Locks for Convenience and Security

Are you tired of carrying a bulky ring of keys - for your hitch lock and coupler lock, your pickup cover or trailer door, and all the various padlocks securing your equipment? Tired of fumbling for the right key or having to replace a lost key?

BOLT (Breakthrough One-key Lock Technology) has solved that problem by designing a line of locks that can operate with a key you already have handy - your vehicle ignition key.

When you insert your own key into the cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. When the key is removed, the cylinder moves into the locked position. When the key is turned again, it will rotate to the unlocked position.

BOLT is particularly useful in commercial applications. Imagine being able to send a crew without having to sign out multiple keys for a work truck, trailer, hitch pins, and equipment locks. With BOLT, the vehicle key becomes a master key. It opens all those locks and you no longer have the hassle of getting to a work site only to find that you've brought the wrong keys.

Video Transcript for BOLT Covered Padlock: The Breakdown

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bolt line of padlocks. These are designed to be keyed exactly to your vehicle's ignition, so you're always going to have the right key with you. Available for Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan several different manufacturers. It's a very simple operation, here on the bottom you're going to have a small cover that needs to be removed. You can do it by hand, it's a pretty simple process, just pull that off. That exposes our lock core, We'll then take our vehicles ignition key, place it in, we want to turn it all the way over until we feel it stop. As you can see that's unlocked our lock for us, now any time we go to us it, ignition key goes in, you're able to unlock it.

This is going to be great for securing trailer couplers, securing items to your trailer or even like farm gates or something. You're always going to have your truck when you go to your farm so it's nice that you won't forget the key, you're always going to have it there with you. They use a hardened chrome plated shackle here, it measure 2 inches tall in usable space. It's going to have a 5/16 inch diameter on it. As you can see we've got a hardened rubber coating, all the way around the lock, that's going to protect it for us. They use an automotive grade tumbler, it's got a 6 plate design, so it's going to resist any kind of tampering we might encounter.

It's kind of hard to see but inside we do have a stainless steel shutter. That protects the dirt, debris and moisture from getting into our cast zinc cylinder. We're going to have superior corrosion resistance. They have made these in the United States and they offer a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we've gone over all the features of our lock let's show you how it looks in action.

Here on our generator we're going to secure it, just with a length of chain. Run that right around where we need that to be used. It's a simple process of coarse we'll unlock our lock, go through our chain, really with that extended we could bring our excess up and secure that off as well. There's a lot of good working room on there so you won't have to worry about securing that chain. You see nice and secure, ready to head down the road, park our trailer and we're not going to have to worry about somebody getting our generator. Now that we've had a good look at it and seen how it works that will complete today's look at the Bolt Line of Padlocks.

The fact that I don’t need to carry another set of keys makes these locks ideal for my situation. I use a pair of these on the back of my car hauler.

by:

I had bought one of these locks I had seen on display at a store and it was their last one, so I checked back at my loyal suppliers’ etrailer, low and behold they have them in stock I bought 4 more, these are the best locks all keyed to the same vehicle this happens when you insert the vehicle key and then it is keyed to that key. Love it. No more messing around with carrying all the keys for the locks for this and that, can’t remember which key went for what. Nope that is all gone. Locks stay with the vehicle and you will have the keys to the locks. Simple.

Great product. I liked it so well that I bought the 5/8” x 2-1/2” hitch pin lock. Now I know when my travel trailer is hooked to my truck that I always have the keys to unlock it in my pocket and not left at home!!!

by:

This is an excellent heavy duty padlock. It works with the ignition key of my vehicle, eliminating the need for another key. However, you have to use a key--a fob will not operate it.

by:

I have multiples of these for locking various cables and hitches to my vehicle. It is the best thing since sliced bread. It keeps my key bring down to just a couple of keys instead of 7 or 8 different lock keys for various locks. You can also pick them up in a shackle style lock as well.

by:

Great product, love having all locks on the same key. ETrailer delivered right on time.

by:

The lock rusted more than I thought it should for the price I paid.

by:

Love this padlock. Keyed it for my Toyota Tundra. I also have several of the BOLT hitch pins lock and a BOLT reciever lock. Very convenient to use your ignition key for these. Better yet, have a cheap, non-chipped copy of your ignition key and keep it on a different keychain and use it for your locks, to open your vehicle doors and tailgate, etc. even while your ignition key is in the ignition. When you have a non-chipped key copy, be sure to NOT try the non-chipped key in your ignition as it will not start the vehicle and will disable it if you try it a few times. But non-chipped key copies are a enconomical (a few dollars to have some made) and besides using the for these locks, your tailgate and doors, you can also hide a copy on your vehicle to unlock your doors if you lock your chipped keys in the passenger compartment.

These are nice locks. 2 Years in and the lock mechanisms still operate smoothly. Use these for hitch lock, toy hauler ramp door locks, receiver pin lock, and cable lock for my surge protector. It's very nice having all the locks keyed the same. And since it's keyed to my towing vehicle key I never have to worry about forgetting the keys. I always have the right key when pulling with my truck!

by:

using this on my trailer ball hitch. Shaft is not to big and the length of the shaft is good. Easy to set up with my truck key.

by:

It's a great, quality lock. Spends most of its time on the back of my trailer keeping my ramps where I left them. Opens easily with my truck key.

by:

Saves me keys and key finding and frust ration

by:

Easy peasy. I’ve got a 2022 3500 HD Silverado with the key that pulls out of the remote. Stuck it in the locks, turned clockwise and done! I checked out these locks on Amazon and each part number said it wouldn’t fit my truck. I knew if I bought them from e-trailer and had a problem, I would get the customer service that I needed. The price difference was negligible ( Amazon was $2 more) and shipping was free over $100. No contest! Oh, I had emails through the whole process telling me where everything was at, and an email that said it was delivered! Can we say great customer service!

by:

I have used the Bolt lock system for about 3 years. I ordered the first ones directly from the manufacturer. I have the padlocks and a j bolt for securing our TT hitch. I needed more padlocks and found they were now available through distributors. I chose to use etrailer because they have an excellent reputation for a large inventory and especially service. I really like the Bolt system because I can key them to my truck key and the quality of the products.

by:

I love BOLT locks, the only locks I use for trailering. I have the padlocks for trailer doors; then I also use hitch and coupler pin locks from BOLT.

I truly value using my truck key for locks rather than having 3+ sets of keys for individual sets of locks!

Marking this a 4 (vs. 5) star because the padlocks can be a bit finicky when trying to close them; this is nothing Earth-shattering, but there is always room for improvement.

Great product eliminates having unnecessary keys on ur key ring

by:

All three items I ordered - are exactly what I expected (padlock, hitch receiver lock, and coil cable lock). I had these same products for a truck I recently sold, and immediately ordered them when I purchased my newer truck! The ease and simplicity of your ignition key to work on these locks is brilliant! What a concept!
These locks are durable - reliable - and I’d even say a “necessity” for whatever type truck you own. I have never had any kind of problem or issue with the BOLT locks - high quality workmanship!
Never worry about your trailer ball mount being stolen, and you will see the cable and padlock have “endless” uses for securing items on or off your truck! You won’t be disappointed with your purchase…..

by:

I have seven locks I use in my Jeep, trailer hitch and Turtleback trailer. One in my Jeep I use to secure a lock box for a Glock; two-four secure my max-coupler articulating hitch; and five-seven are on my overland trailer (Turtleback Getaway).

Obviously all are keyed to my Rubicon fob.

Convenient, heavy duty locks.

by:

i like these locks that will work with my truck key. i like having one key that will work on my truck and these locks. very well made and heavy duty at that.

by:

Still just as great as ever. I use these for everything I can. Only downside-when you sell the vehicle everything stays with it.

Thanks for your product review, I did want to let you know that this Bolt lock BL7018518 is not a fit for a 2003 GMC, the earliest GMC year offering for this lock is a 2007. Which would explain the issue you had. For your 2003 GMC you would want the Bolt Lock BL7018517.
