Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Laclede 48" Long Trailer Safety Chain w/ 7/16" Hooks

Hi everyone, Aiden here at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to these Laclede safety chains. Let's check 'em out. So in total, everything is going to be 48 inches long. They attach on our trailer just right up here to this bolt on the coupler. And then on the end, we've got our seven 16th as hooks.

That will just latch onto your safety chain, loops like this and make sure that in the case of an emergency, your trailer isn't going down the road on its own. It'll keep it attached right here. Now these are gonna be a quarter inch diameter chain with a 5,000 pound break strength. So for our small trailer that we've got these hooked up to right now, that's gonna be more than enough. And then getting these installed is super easy.

Obviously it's going to differ a bit depending on the trailer, you're putting it on, but we'll show you how we got them on this trailer. Now the first step of the installation is gonna actually be for us replacing the old chains. So we're gonna get these removed. Now ours aren't necessarily in bad shape, but we're just kind of doing this for demonstration purposes. And on our trailer we'll want to remove this front bolt on the coupler, because our safety chains are actually fed through that.

So as I pull this bolt out, you'll see them fall just like that. And then all we have to do is take our new chains. I'm gonna kind of hold them up and find where the middle roughly is. Right there looks pretty good. So this is the link I'm gonna feed that bolt back through.

So I'll just kind of pop it up into there, hold it in place and feed that bolt back through, nice and secure. And then just run this nut down on the other side and we're all done. Then we're free to hook up to our vehicle and hit the road. And that'll do it for a look at these Laclede safety chains. Thanks for watching..

  • 48 inch Safety Chain Options for Pontoon Boat Trailer
The closest thing we offer to what you are looking for would be the part # 49150 which is 44 inches long and has the hooks on just the one end. In the 48 inch length all we have is the part # 2118-348-04 which has the hooks on either end.

  • Best Way to Get Longer Safety Chains on a Trailer
You can try using quick-links to add length to your safety chains, but your best option is going to be to use a different set of chains that are longer. For a 27 inch long chain rated at 5K, go with the # 2118-605-04. For a 48 inch chain with the same capacity, use part # 2118-348-04.

  • Why do Safety Chains Have to be Behind Fulton Fold-Away Coupler
The chains need to be to the rear of the coupler of the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3" x 3" Tongue - Bolt On - Up to 5,000 lbs # FHDPB330301 because it is a DOT regulation, for which quality and reliability of a product has no bearing. Specifically it requires the chains to be attached to "any point to the rear of the attachment point" based on my research. I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well of the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit # FHDPB330301.

  • Where to Attach the Safety Chains After Installing the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit
You will need to locate the safety chains before the cut that is made to install the Fold-Away Coupler Hinge, # FHDPB330301, to be in compliance with DOT regulations. Normally the chains are welded to the bottom or side of the trailer framing, and ran forward. I would have a qualified weldor, weld a Safety Chain Loop, # E950, to the bottom of the trailer frame, before the fold way cut, and then attach safety chains, like part # 2118-348-04, with Safety Chain Quick Links, # 2114-553-04....

  • Safety Chain Connection To Westin Bumper with Integrated Hitch Ball Holes
The Westin Fey Surestep Rear Bumper - Black Powder Coated Steel # 61001 is rated to haul up to 3,500 lbs and will need a hitch ball with a 3/4 inch shank. I recommend # 19258 for a 2 inch ball or # C40001 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. The bumper has integrated holes for the safety chains on either side of the hitch ball. These holes will allow for the S-hooks of your safety chains like # 2118-348-04 to connect quickly and easily but are not compatible with clevis hooks. I've attached an image...

  • Safety Chain and Turnbuckles for a Trailer Extension
The safety chains are not included with the extension but are needed. the recommended saftey chains for this application are the 48 inch Long Safety Chain with 7/16 inch Hooks, 5,000 pounds, item # 2118-348-04. By turnbuckles, I am assuming you are referring to what we call Quick Links. The Safety Chain Quick Links item # RM-910022, can be used to attach the safety chains.

  • What is Needed to Flat Tow a 2007 Pontiac Vibe Behind an RV
To tow your 2007 Pontiac Vibe behind your RV, you will first need to install a base plate kit. For your vehicle, you will need the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit, # 3130-1. Base plate kits are vehicle specific and this one is made to fit your Vibe. I have included a video that shows a base plate kit being installed to give you a general idea of what it entails. Next you will attach a tow bar. The RoadMaster Tracker, # RM-020, is designed to be compatible with the XL series of base plates....

In addition to a hitch like # 13184, I would recommend ballmount # C45010, as this would put your hitch ball at the most common trailer height. For a more exact ballmount fit, you can measure from the ground to a point just below your bumper. Then, with the trailer level, measure from the ground to the bottom, flat part of the trailer coupler. The difference between the two measurements would be your required rise or drop. For example, if the measurement to the trailer coupler is...

Since there are four different versions of the 2017 VW Jetta (the S, SE, SEL and GLI) to confirm your model's towing capacity you need to check your printed manual. One way to determine the length you will need is to connect your trailer to your tow vehicle, back your trailer up into a near jack-knife position and then use a rope to go from the safety chain attachment points of your trailer to your tow vehicle.
