Hi, I'm Matt with etrailer, and today we're gonna be talking about the Yakima roof rack system with the core bars on top of our 2023 Subaru Legacy. Now, this is gonna be a great option for you since the legacy is a smaller car. So if you're gonna be running out of space, you're gonna be able to store things on top of your car, whether that be luggage, kayaks, or even skis. So let's take a closer look at it. Our system's gonna be made above three components today and the first one is gonna be our 50 inch core bars. Now, the way these are gonna work, they're gonna have this arrow shape to them, so that's gonna help them be more aerodynamic, helping them reduce that wind noise.
We're gonna have these brackets that go around them and connect to our skyline towers. Our skyline towers are really easy to use and take off. The main thing about these is if you want to use this with something that you don't plan on having on your roof all the time, it only takes a few seconds to remove, just pulling back that lid, having the ability to lift up now. And all the hardware is gonna be hidden underneath this door, so it's gonna give that clean finish to it. And then at the bottom we're gonna have our fit kit.
This is gonna be this plastic piece that connects to your tower and then it's gonna have this rubber piece that connects to your car so you don't scratch anything up. As for how it's gonna sit up here, if I measure from the top of our roof to the top of the crossbar, that's gonna be a little bit over four and a half inches, isn't gonna add much to your car, it's just something to kind of keep in mind if you're going through any low clearance areas. So what I'd recommend doing is taking a tow of the height of your car, crossbars and if you have any accessories on top of there so you know you can make it under it. As for the area underneath, we're gonna have about three and a half inches, so you'll be able to fit most clamp on accessories. Now, if you have any bulky HD bar accessories or anything with large clamps, definitely be mindful, especially on the front one, because you don't want to get too close to your sunroof because you would scratch it up or damage it.
And as for our overhang from our tower to the end cap, that's gonna be about three inches. So it's gonna be pretty flush with our car. Now we do have this small gap where you might be able to put some smaller accessories on and one of the reasons why you might want to put accessory on the very edge is just so it's a lot easier to access. Now, for what our crossbar spread is gonna be, since this is a fixed mounting point, we're gonna be very limited on where we can place this. There's gonna be two holes per side you can choose from.
And for what we chose today, our crossbar spread is gonna be about 33 inches. As for what you can put up here, since we don't have any T tracks, we won't be able to put any T channel accessories, so you'll only be limited to your clamp on accessories. And you're gonna have a weight capacity up to 165 pounds. But what I recommend doing is finding out what your roof is rated for, you can find that in your owner's manual, and then going from the lowest rated component. Overall, this is gonna be a great system for you if you do plan on taking on and off your crossbars, because it's gonna be a really easy process. If you want something though with a T track on it so you can use your T channel accessories, then I'd recommend the same system only with the JetStream bars. As for the installation, it's pretty straightforward. But if you need a hand with it, just stay tuned and we'll show you how to do it. To start off our install, we're just gonna lay everything out. So we're gonna have our core bar crossbars and then we're gonna have the towers that'll go along with those. And then the fit kit. And we're gonna have the hardware that goes with it. You're gonna have two tools that come with your set. You're gonna have this regular Allen key, then you're gonna have this Yakima Allen key with a built-in torque device. And what I recommend grabbing too is a tape measure to make things a lot easier. We're gonna start with our skyline towers. The way we're gonna get this ready is just by squeezing this back door on both sides and opening it up. That will reveal this bolt at the bottom. And if we loosen that bolt up, that's gonna open up this axis door to this bolt and this hole here. Once you've done that, you can line up this bolt that comes through with this bracket on your crossbar. A good method of doing that is putting your Allen key on the back of that bolt so you can arrange it however you feel like you need to and line it up with that hole. And when everything's lined up, then you can start screwing it down. But you don't want to do it all the way because we're gonna need to make some adjustments later on. And once you've completed this process for the side, you can do so on the other side. Now we're gonna prep our fit kit. And you'll notice we have two of these rubber pieces. The one that we want is this one with the cutout on the side. So we're gonna put this other one up and not use it. And you're gonna line up your fit kit together with that rubber molding. Just pushing it on. And after when you've done that, you can repeat that same process with the other one. Now we're gonna get our hardware ready and there's gonna be a few different bolts. I just got a few of them out. And the one that we want to use is gonna be the smallest one. So just make sure you compare sizes with each one of them, making sure that you have the right one. And when you have it ready, make sure you put a washer on it. Now I'm gonna come over to the top of our car and you'll notice we're gonna have these caps on these rubber molding pieces on our roof. And what we want to use is a screwdriver or a trim tool just to pry those open. And once are open, you'll notice there's gonna be two holes in here and that's where you're gonna put your bolt through. Now you're gonna have the choice of which one you want to use. I'm gonna use the closest one. Just be sure you do the same thing on the other side, choosing that same hole. And we're gonna put our fit kit up here and run this bolt through, connecting it to our car. And then you can use your included Allen key to tighten it down. Now just recommend grabbing the towel, throwing it on top of your roof, making sure that when you do put your crossbars up here, you don't scratch anything up. Now we're gonna grab those crossbars and lift up and put them on top of our roof. And we're just gonna roughly place it up here. If everything isn't lining up, that's okay. That's part of the reason why we didn't tighten it down all the way. And now we're just gonna make some adjustments, putting our tower in place. And once it's in place, we can apply pressure and pull the crossbar towards us. And this is so we can figure out how much our overhang is gonna be on each side. After when you've made your adjustments, we're gonna flip this over very carefully so we don't move anything. And after when it's been flipped, we're gonna tighten these bolts in the bottom the rest of the way. And after when that's tightened all the way, we're gonna flip this over and put it back on. And then we're gonna tighten up this bolt in here. And once that's tightened all the way, you can do the same thing on the other side. And this will let you know if it's tightened all the way, when you hear that clicking from that torque device. And once you hear that click, you can shut this door. And after that, you'll just repeat that same process on the back side. And when it's all put up there, just make sure you give it a good shake test, make sure everything's secured and if it is, you can load it up with whatever accessories you have and take it out for a ride. If you liked everything you saw today, that's just a look at the installation and some of the features of the Yakima roof rack system on top of our 2023 Subaru Legacy.

Extremely quiet, aerodynamic crossbars attach to Yakima towers to create a stylish roof rack for your vehicle. Rubber strips in T-slots push down to load carriers or accessories - no need to trim. Full-length aluminum bars maximize carrying capacity.Great quality! They come with two different style bases. One flat, and one that is stepped to account for the raised area near the gutter trim. Good variety of screws to meet your application. My 2015 Mazda 3 (with fixed points) needed the medium length screws. Seems very solid!
I left the plastic gutter moldings on and just drilled holes for the screws to go through.
Fit our Subaru Forester perfectly. Install was a breeze. For the money I wish they came with the core locks.
Everything came in a timely manner and ready to install. Looks great, solid rack.
Very nice quality towers. Very heavy duty! They have a cool "snap" on / off mechanism for quick removal and installation.
You guys provide great products and excellent customer service.
Thanks
These crossbars were easy to install and adjust. Be sure to get all the pieces you need. There is no mention of the Landing Pads necessary to use these.
Parts arrived quickly. Installation was a breeze. Everything needed for a quick and professional installation was included in the shipment.
The 50” jetstream cross bars were perfect for my 2019 Ford Ranger with my ARE cap. They are paired with the Yakima Skyline towers and appropriate landing pads (protip: call etrailer when you order to ensure you have the correct setup;)
These cross bars are SILENT on my cap. Zero wind noise. My daughter and I installed them on a Friday (I do recommend watching etrailer’s installation video in addition to the paper instructions) and left for a 700 mile weekend road trip the next day to pick up a kayak, paddle with friends downstate then drop her off at summer camp.
Even with empty Yakima Jaylows on top, no wind noise. Even with a boat in the Jaylows, no wind noise.
These are the sweetest rack’s I’ve had. With the Skyline towers and landing pads, they are also easy to take off and put on. Click click done.
They look good, too;)
etrailer customer service for the win, too. When I originally ordered, I did not order all the items I needed for installation. When I realized this, I called and they got me squared away.
Yakima Baseline with Yakima CBX 18 Cargo Box fitted on my 2012 Toyota Corolla S Sedan 2012.
Instructions were clear and roof rack was easily installed.
Yakima Landing Pad 22 is the only product I could find that is suitable for my Mercedes E450 Coupe. The car's panoramic glass extends close to where the fixed mounting points are, but Yakima has accounted for that by designing the LP 22 so that the small part that sits on the glass is not transferring the load. Also, the LP22 accommodates the flip-open doors for the four fixed mounting points on the Mercedes. Yakima instruction manual and etrailer.com videos are highly useful.
Only complaint is with the LP 22 Covers, which are supplied for when the roof rack (Towers and Crossbars) are removed. These covers are not usable - they do not snap into place and appear as if they were designed for a different landing pad. This is not a deal breaker for me because I remove the LP 22s whenever I remove the roof rack, but it will likely be a concern for others.
Yakima SkyLine Towers are well-designed and well-executed. They easily fit into the Yakima Landing Pads and form a tight fit when closed. And they also fit nicely into the Yakima JetStream Crossbars when following the Yakima instruction manual and various YouTube videos. I did run into a snag at first where I found the rubber seal on one SkyLine Tower getting caught on the JetStream Crossbar track, but after that I was careful not to let that happen with the other towers.
I find the appearance of the Yakima SkyLine Towers to match their level of quality in materials and design.
Great company. Fast delivery.
Great product - very good quality. I liked the fact that I could keep the risers mounted on my car, but could remove the cross bars. It took me awhile to install - but I'm not very mechanically inclined.
I needed crossbars for my new 2018 Mazda CX5, which came with flush side rails. The Yakima crossbars, along with the RidgeLine Towers and the the vehicle specific kit worked great. The installation (10-15 min) is super easy. They look cool, and performed great (I strapped 160-lbs rooftop tent on them!). Removing them is also super easy (10 min tops). Highly recommend.
I chose the Yakima roof rack, because It spanned 50 inches, rather than the leading competitor's 47 inches, making it better for tying down 4 ft x 8 ft sheets of building material. It also seemed to be about half the price. It took me about 2 hours to put it all together and mount it on my car. The instructions were all visual and there was one little pic I didn't understand, but the equipment seemed to go together correctly anyway. Now that it's adjusted, it should be fairly easy to remove and replace next time. I did need to put on super tacky gloves to get the covers off. Although it seemed unnecessarily complicated, I would still choose this product again.
These really look so much better then the factory racks! Easy to install. Easy to order! Great product!
Product required a bit of customizing because the pads are a little tall and hollow, so when you tighten center bolt, pad will try to collapse inwards unless you find a proper spacer in length under the pad (NOT PROVIDED BY YAKIMA, NOT ETRAILER'S FAULT), but once that spacer was put in place, it turned out beautifully.
Good condition quality. Good and detailed instructions but aittle tedious install.
All parts arrived in good order, haven't completed assembly yet as I had cross threaded one of the support brackets. Hopefully soon
Used these on my 2011 BMW 335. It took a little while to get the threads to catch on the roof attachment the first time I installed them. Otherwise they do what they are supposed to do and don't scratch the roof.
Over the years I have purchased many items from etrailer.com. They have great customer service, fast and free shipping. The product they carry are industry proven and of high quality. I have been very satisfied with their service.
The fit is good, but there was a mistake in Yakima’s fit guide for my 2020 Kia Soul. Yakima said to use the 28mm screws but those would not reach the threads. The 33mm screws (which were also included) worked perfectly.
I’m using these towers in conjunction with the JetStream cross bars. Assembly and setup was easy, all the tools you need are provided, except perhaps a tape measure for mounting. Looks and feels solid and well made. This is my second set of Yakima towers and cross bars. I plan to use this setup for an old roof top hard shell case and for my mountain bike to get to the trail head.
After completing the installation I took it out for a spin to check for wind noise at highway speeds. No discernible noise, I’m very happy about that as I really don’t want to remove these when not needed. For reference these are mounted on a 2019 Subaru Forester Touring with factory raised rails. Plenty of clearance for attaching equipment and gear.
Side note: the gentleman that assisted me on the phone while ordering was very pleasant and helpful, got me the right products very quickly as I was in a time crunch. Two thumbs up!
Arrived quickly; easy instal!
Easy to install. No noticeable noise from the bars. Seem to be very sturdy.
