Solution for Carrying 2 e Bikes on 2021 Kia Soul

Updated 09/04/2020 | Published 09/03/2020

Question:

We have a heavy duty Kuat dual bike rack for carrying our ebikes and we what to use it our our new Kia Soul. I don’t want an adapter to make a 1 1/4” hitch receiver into a 2” receiver as that would be a weak point and add length. Is there a suitable hitch with a 2” receiver for a Soul? I will not be using it for towing.

Unfortunately, none of our hitch manufacturers offer a 2 inch receiver hitch for the 2021 Kia Soul.

We do offer a solution for you, though. You'd first install the Curt Class I hitch, part # C67FR. Then, you'd add a class I compatible e-bike rack. The Thule EasyFold, part # TH903202 is not an inexpensive alternative, but it is the only rack we offer that can carry heavier e bikes we offer that's compatible with a class I hitch. On the upside, the EasyFold offers some excellent features like its 65 lb per bike capacity, an integrated loading ramp and built in wheels that make transporting the rack from its storage space to the rear of the vehicle. The rack also tilts rearward for easier access to the vehicle's cargo area. The rack can also fold up against the rear of the vehicle when unloaded. The hitch includes locks that secure the bikes to the rack and the rack to the vehicle to help deter theft.

You are right on the money being reluctant to use a hitch adapter, as the bike rack manufactures don't recommend doing so. Adding the extra piece in between the rack and the hitch receiver tube increases the leverage applied to the hitch, which lowers the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by half. The extra length will also cause more bouncing, especially with heavy e bikes which will add additional stress to the hitch and its attachment points to the vehicle.

I've linked to a product demonstration video showing how the Thule EasyFold rack works.
