Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

A16 Two-Piece Interlocking Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A16 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

R16 Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' and 6-1/2' beds, this roller helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Non-Binding Design

The round-tube design of this slider allows for relatively uninhibited movement of your fifth-wheel hitch. Because your hitch can glide smoothly and easily along the rods, there is less chance of binding.

With straight, flat contact points, as found with square-tube sliders, tension can build between the slider and the hitch when your truck and trailer are somewhat out of line or are on uneven ground. As a result, it can be difficult to properly activate the slider when your truck and trailer are not in a straight line.

With a round-tube slider, there is more give between the contacting surfaces, allowing better mobility of the hitch system. Fewer corners means less tension buildup. Activating a round-tube slider is easier, and operation as a whole is smoother.

Curt rebranded this fifth-wheel trailer hitch by changing its name from Q16 to A16 in 2016. All features and specifications remained the same.

Video Transcript for Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt A16 fifth wheel trailer hitch with R16 slider, part number C16521. Here's what our fifth wheel hitch looks like fully installed. It's going to mount using our base rails here. It's going to allow us to tow a fifth wheel trailer. This is a six foot bed truck and if you ever towed a fifth wheel with a short bed truck, you know that it comes in handy to have a slider like we have here whenever you're making tight turns. We come to this handle and we pull out, we can turn it and our fifth wheel is going to slide back 12 inches to give us extra clearance so we don't have to worry about our fifth wheel trailer hitting our cab. The slider is a non binding slider, so no matter what angle you're pulling your trailer at, it's going to be able to slide freely back and forth.

Whenever we're done making that tight turn and getting around the corner, we can straighten our trailer out, straighten our truck out, and our slider's going to slide right back and lock into position. The jaw here is a two piece jaw. It's going to make full 360 degree contact with the kingpin. If we come to our tethered handle over here, we're going to have a safety pin that's going to make sure that our handle is locked in the closed position or if we open it up and we remove the pin, we can slide our handle back and it'll open up our jaws. Another nice feature is right here in our jaw, we're going to have built in grease zerks so that way whenever we need to do maintenance on our fifth wheel, it's going to be that much easier just to reach them right there. The head itself does articulate backwards towards the front and left and right which is going to come in handy because it's going to make it easier to hook up to your trailer even if you're on un-level ground. Here on the side, you can see that we have multiple hole locations, as well as on the head itself.

This is going to be able to determine how high you want your fifth wheel head to sit. It's going to go all the way from 17 and a half inches all the way up to 21 and a half inches. Now a nice feature that's also a safety feature, is right here at the back of the head. If we look we're going to have a green circle right here in the middle. If we look over to the right, it's going to tell us that we're ready to tow. Depending on where the jaws, if they're locked open, if they're in the couple position, what position it's in, this dot here is going to change and it's either going to be red saying, you're uncoupled, do not tow, green, you're good to go, or yellow saying that you need to couple or it's not fully locked into place. Our slider also has a color indicator.

Here on the passenger side it's letting us know the green indicator means it's ready to tow. If you see this green piece sticking out, our slider is locked in the tow position. If we come to the driver side where the handle on our slider is, we'll see that there's a red stripe and this sign right here next to it is going to say red indicator, do not tow. That's letting us know that it's not locked into the towing position but it is able to slide into the maneuvering position. Our hitch is going to feature 16,000 pounds of gross trailer weight rating and the vertical load limit is going to come in right at 4,000 pounds. Now, I do want to mention, you always want to double check with your vehicle's owners manual to make sure your truck can handle that.

Now, our fifth wheel slider here, it is compatible with all industry above the bed rail kits. Now, the safety pin that goes into our handle here, we also have the option of putting a padlock here, that way our trailer is secured to our hitch. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how we get it installed. I already have my slider in place, now the way it's going to attach to our rails and our bed here, is we're going to have a couple pins and clips and on each corner it's going to go through. Going to take my pin, slide it through, now I can secure it with my cotter pin. Now that we have this in place, we're going to go ahead and put all of them in place. To begin the installation on our head, we're going to take the handle assembly here. We're going to slide it onto our handle, but before we slide it all the way on, we're going to take the spring that they provide in our kit and we're going to slide it into this slot, into this section right here. We're going to hold it with our finger, that way we can slide the handle over the spring and we can line up our holes here. We're going to need to get a bolt through here. The trick to get the spring to move out of the way without having to finagle a screwdriver or anything like that is if we take our handle and we push it all the way in, nice and tight, and we come back, very slowly pulling our handle back and we'll get just enough tension to grab that spring. Now we're going to take one of our supplied cap bolts here. We're going to drop it down into position and we're going to pull the handle back slightly so we can line up the other hole on the backside here and drop our bolt into place as well. We're going to take one of our M8 bolts here with a lock washer and we're going to slide it through. Now we're going to pull our handle back slightly to line up this hole in the back and we're going to do the same thing. We're going to take one of our cap bolts with a lock washer and then drop it down. Now we're going to take this block that's in the kit, it's going to have three holes. Two of them are going to have threads in them and one of them is just going to be open like this. Now, we're going to take it and line up the two threaded holes with our bolts and that large hole is going to go towards the large hole at the end of our handle here. We're just going to loosely line it up and then we're going to come back and using a five millimeter Allen, we're going to go ahead and start tightening down our bolts. We just want to get each one started hand tight where you don't have to worry about cross threading your bolts, and then we can snug everything up. With our handle in place, we can put our safety latch in, put the clip into place, that way our handle's locked and we can get ready to put our head into our truck bed. I have my fifth wheel on my slider now and we're going to have two holes on the front and the back of our slider. Now, each side is going to be mounted using two bolts and two lock nuts. In our application, we have a tonneau cover so we are going to set this at the lowest setting so we can go ahead and push our bolt through from the outside going in, making sure that it's going through our slider in our fifth wheel head, then we can thread on our lock nut. We can do the same thing on the back. Now that we have this side done, we can go ahead and repeat the same process on the other side. Now I'm going to go ahead and snug down all my hardware evenly before I torque down the final mount. I'm going to be using a 21 millimeter socket for the bolt and a 22 millimeter wrench for the nut on the inside. Now that my hardware's snug, I'm going to come back with a torque wrench and I'm going to torque all my bolts to the specified amount in the instructions. We're going to repeat that for all the remaining bolts. With everything torqued down we're ready to back up to our trailer and hit the road. That'll finish up our look at the Curt A16 fifth wheel trailer hitch with R16 slider, part number C16521.

This is my first fifth wheel. I have a short bed so I got the package deal with the hitch and the slider. Took me about 5 hrs to install with the custom mounting brackets and rails for my 2015 chevy 2500 HD. Everything went as the instructions said without any issues. I have only pulled my RV with it one time just to try it out. Felt very smooth no rattles or pops as I have herd with other hitches. So far I like it a lot. 414028

Wow! I ordered the products on Monday night (after 7p.m CDT) and I had the items on my property Friday afternoon! Great shipping speed which is really order processing and getting the product out so UPS could deliver it. I ordered the Curt A16, custom rails for my 2015 F250 and the Curt harness. All three items took me about 4 hours to install--mostly by myself. The install was easy, but I needed the tools that were listed in the videos--WHICH is one of the reasons I ordered from --the videos for installation and product research, not to mention free shipping. I researched the products for several months before ordering, no other site compares to educational product videos really helped me make a decision. Tools that are needed or at least will help make this quicker--Hydraulic jack, safety jacks, impact wrench, Electric drill, 2 1/8" hole saw for the harness plate mount, 9/16" bit, tape measure, hammer, long straight screwdriver for tapping spacers into place, some good light, and an uninterrupted afternoon in your garage. I am so glad I ordered from and would recommend all of these above products. THANK YOU!!! 372773

First off I just got done installing the hitch and I hooked on my 35ft fith wheel trailer and went for a ride with windows down sun roof open and not a single rattle , clank , or noise from the bed of the truck with this hitch . It was easy to assemble but I did have one spot where the paint got chipped on the slider during shipping so I just touched it up . Very satisfied with hitch it latches automatically when you back in to it and the slider part works like it should . 294820

The products have worked flawlessly no problems and thank you for checking back with me its nice when a company cares about there costumers. Next time I need any trailer products I will definitely be contacting etrailer.

The Curt system is really high quality. No issues at all putting the system in. One thing I do like is the position of the plate handle. It does not stick upward and is even with the plate. By designing the handle that way I can still cover my bed with my tonneau cover where other manufactures the handle was higher than the bed rail. The price was excellent and dealing with customer service was the same. 380677

I recently installed the Q16 Slider Hitch on my 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. I have used it a couple of times now pulling my 5th wheel and have had no issues with it at all. I used the slide feature twice and both times it worked very easily and had my truck and trailer at a 90 degree angle with plenty of room to spare. Great product, was delivered in a very timely manner with no issues. 448366

I received the 2500HD custom fit rail kit and A16 slider hitch very quickly which was great because we were on a time crunch to pick up our new camper. I selected this hitch and rail combination after reading all of the positive reviews. A buddy and I installed it ourselves in a few hours and could not be more happy with the fitment. We used the installation video below the product description which really helped. Etrailer was great to work with and I would definitely order from them again. We will be picking up our fifth wheel this weekend and will comment on how well it performs! 409008

I have only used the hitch on one short trip but at this point I am very happy with it. Shipping was fast but shipping boxes were torn open, all the parts were ok. I followed the instruction video on etrailer site and there was an error in it that took me a few minutes to work out. When installing the handle after you place the two bolts in the holes and start to put the bottom plate on the video shows putting it on upside down. I kept trying this and checking the video and it did not work, finally took it apart and looked and could see the problem. Overall very happy with everything I have ever bought from etrailer. 447726

Great hitch used it on a few trips already driven over 3,000 miles. Love the dual jaws and the adjustability, my truck sits a bit higher and I was able to adjust this down to get it where it needed to be- even with the Reese adapter plate(see photo). The polyurethane is also a nice touch, makes the ride a little more cozy then a standard hitch. Use with the provided lube plate 355598

I can't say enough about the professionalism of the staff. Carrieann was kind, helpful and answered any question that I had, she even followed up with emails on the status of the order. Everything arrived as she said in just four days. I installed it today, it fits great. The installation was a Curt A-16 fifth wheel hitch. It appears to be a well built unit and I have no disappointments. Do not plan on towing for a couple weeks but I fore see no problems. I would recommend e-trailer to anyone. Thanks!!! 240673

It works great and as I stated a year ago I was treated very honestly and professionally. I have recommended your company to others. Thanks again!

Fast shipping, solid product... took myself and a buddy 2 hours to install the custom kit and hitch on my 15 Silverado, only problem I've notice with the hitch is when it has a load on it the handle on the slider won't lock into position when changing.... don't know if it's from the cold or what but with no load it works well.... and be sure to check your height on the hitch so when you go to maneuver your trailer it won't hit your tailgate.... the hitch height adjusts... 177193

The hitch itself is great! No issues to date. Its heavy so plan on 2 people or disassembly to install or remove it everytime. My only complaint would be that the position stickers that are on it are not weather friendly at all. They are either completely gone or faded so bad you can't read them. Not a big issue at all but I keep it inside in the winter so 3 months of use they shouldn't be that bad. 399473

Hitch works great! I bought a short bed truck and used a standard fifth wheel hitch first. That was a mistake and I have the cab dent to prove it. The slider hitch is a must with a short bed. I used it this Memorial weekend and was able very pleased with the ease of use and the extra cab clearance. I recommend this hitch and! 254437

The hitch came to my house in 3 days, ordered on a Monday at my house by Thursday. The only thing wrong is the sticker that says tow position and manuver position is damaged. Instructions to assemble pretty clear, but had my rails in the bed of pickup allready. I haven't used it yet but will do a test run tomarrow 395731

Bought this a year ago needed a slider for short box ford super crew 2012 6ft. 6in. box gives me plenty of room to do a jack knife back without any problem with slider slid back . when going down the road slider slid up I can probably make a 75 degree turn with out worring about hitting the back of the cab. 383877

Review from a similar Curt A16 in Fifth Wheel

I like the dual jaws. They hold the king pin tighter than the slide bar style. I also like the color coded hook indicator on the front, although a complete visual inspection should be done each time you hook. The only shortcomings I can see are the height, it's a little short even on the highest adjustment, and the quality of the Chinese fasteners leave a little to be desired. Other than that, it pulls securely and quietly. It couples and uncouples very smoothly. Overall it is a nice heavy duty piece. 137021

The first one I bought had some internal problems and became very loose around the kingpin when towing. I talked to an Etrailer rep and he put me in touch with the Curt manufacturer directly who sent me a new hitch and had me send the old one back at no expense to me. I was very pleased with Etrailers and Curts customer service. They listened, understood, and solved the problem very quickly once it was identified. Thank you, and I WILL look to you for my further trailer needs.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch For 2017 Ram 2500 With Factory Prep Package
  • For your 2017 Ram 2500 with Factory Prep package, I recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16520-16021. This will allow you to have a clean bed when not in use and easily install this hitch that is capable of pulling your 13000 lb loaded trailer with MORyde pin box. • Difference Between Curt Q16 and E16 Fifth Wheel Hitch Sliders
  • The Q series of Curt fifth wheel hitches are considered to be the nicer Curt fifth wheel hitch when compared to the E16 hitch. Biggest difference being the jaw design. The E16 # 16516 uses a slide bar jaw design that allows quite a bit more movement than the Q16 (now called A16) # C16521 which uses a 360 degree contact jaw.

  • Pros and Cons of 5th Wheel Hitch With a Slide Bar Jaw Versus a Dual Jaw Hitch
  • The difference between a slide bar jaw and a dual jaw is how tightly the fifth wheel king pin is held. Both do a good job securing the king pin, preventing it from coming loose. The Dual Jaw will hold the king pin much more tightly, preventing the king pin from rattling around in the pin box. Any movement of the king pin in the hitch jaws will be easily felt and heard in the truck cab. Every time the you brake or accelerate, if there's any movement in the hitch jaws-you're gonna feel...

If you need additional clearance to stay level, you would want to consider a king pin replacement; I've added a link to our page with all of our replacement king pins for you to take a look at. • Is Valley Power Pull Glider 5th Wheel Hitch Compatible w/ Prep Package on 2016 Ram 3500 6 Ft Bed
  • Let's start with the Valley hitch. If your Power Pull Glider uses industry standard rails, like part # RP58058, then you could use the Reese 5th Wheel Rail Adapter, # RP30154, to mount your Valley fifth wheel in your 2016 Ram 3500. As for a Curt hitch, I would recommend the following sliding fifth wheel hitches, # C16521 for 16K, # C16536 for 20K, and # C16546 for 24K. These sliding hitches will require the use of Adapter Rail, # C16022. The factory prep packages do not include a hitch...

  • Recommended Truck Bed Fifth Wheel Wiring Harness For 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

This harness plugs between the 7-way connector you have and the harness that is plugged into the back of it. You then just route the harness to the location in your truck bed you want the harness to complete the install. I have attached a link to an installation of this harness you can check out. • Should a Long or Short Bed 2015 Ram 2500 be Used to Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer
  • The bed length only refers to the length of the bed itself and the cab style does not matter. A long bed truck is typically 8 feet long though some import truck long beds are a bit shorter. A 6 foot, 4 inch bed is a short bed on a domestic truck like your 2006 Ford F-250. Ideally, you would want an 8 foot bed in your new truck. But you don't have to have one. You would need a slider if you went with a short bed to ensure that you can make 90 degree turns without hitting the truck...

Then you can use the X5 adapter # C16210 and place a 5th wheel hitch on it. I recommend the Curt A16, # C16120 for a long bed or # C16521 for a short bed. The Demco works by turning the locking plate with the thumb screw, which rotates the feet of the adapter locking it into place. The biggest difference between these two adapters is going to be the hitches they fit, which is generally the deciding factor in the adapter they have. The Demco adapter can accommodate any fifth-wheel hitch...

  • How Much Side-to-Side Movement of 5th Wheel Trailer is Acceptable When Using Curt Hitch # C16521

The linked diagram shows the recommended minimum clearances for a 5th wheel a the bed rails, tailgate and bumper. Because the Curt hitch # C16521 has a cushioned head, it will tend to provide more sideways movement than a non-cushioned type. It may be possible to increase the height of the trailer...

When used with the # DM6099 adapter, the minimum hitch height would be about 16-1/4 inches. Keep in mind, to be safe and prevent the underside of your fifth wheel's trailer loft from impacting the tops of your bed sides, you'll want at least 6 inches of clearance between the top of the bed sides and the underside of the trailer loft.
