Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

A16 Two-Piece Interlocking Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A16 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

R16 Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' and 6-1/2' beds, this roller helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Non-Binding Design

The round-tube design of this slider allows for relatively uninhibited movement of your fifth-wheel hitch. Because your hitch can glide smoothly and easily along the rods, there is less chance of binding.

With straight, flat contact points, as found with square-tube sliders, tension can build between the slider and the hitch when your truck and trailer are somewhat out of line or are on uneven ground. As a result, it can be difficult to properly activate the slider when your truck and trailer are not in a straight line.

With a round-tube slider, there is more give between the contacting surfaces, allowing better mobility of the hitch system. Fewer corners means less tension buildup. Activating a round-tube slider is easier, and operation as a whole is smoother.

Curt rebranded this fifth-wheel trailer hitch by changing its name from Q16 to A16 in 2016. All features and specifications remained the same.

Video Transcript for Curt Fifth Wheel - Sliding Fifth Wheel - C16521 Review

Today we're going to review part number C16521. This is the Curt Q16 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch on the Curt R16 Slider. This hitch is a dual jaw design. Has a 16,000 lb weight capacity. For demonstration purposes I do already have this mounted on the base rails and the mounting brackets just to give you an idea what this would be like installed in your truck bed. The base rails and the brackets would be sold separately.

This hitch is a 2 jaw locking system which will help provide a 360 degree jaw to kingpin contact right here. Gives you less rattle, more security than a slide bar model. Again, for demonstration, I have a replica of a kingpin installed in here and you can see the dual jaw wrapped around it. On the back of this hitch head there is a 3 point color code indicator system. This color coding will tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow and basically you can see these colors right here when you're in the cab of your truck.

They are visible from the cab. The head on this is a fully articulating torsion head. It's for controlled coupling, stable quiet ride. It does move side to side and front to back. It is cushioned also for a nice smooth ride. The slider that it's mounted on is a non-binding slider and this will provide clearance which is required for short bed pickups to turn safely at slow speeds and that will help prevent the trailer from hitting the cab of your pickup during those sharp, slow speed turns.

It slides smoothly on these rounded, non-binding rods and these are designed for use on trucks with beds shorter than 8'. It's not recommended for use on truck beds that are shorter than 6'. The lockable handle right here, you can see, let's you easily secure the trailer to the hitch and it comes with this pin and clip. It is also large enough that you could put a padlock through there if you want additional security. The padlocks would be sold separately.

It is a very short throw, single hand operation. The self aligning head will pivot for simple hookup. It does have 3 lube points on it for easy access to the grease fittings. You can remove this head by itself. In one piece it would be pretty heavy for 1 person to do, but to help you remove it, basically, it's a 2 pin head removal system. If you pop off this lynch pin right up here in front, I'll just show you, slide that out and then this pivot pin right here you can pull out. That 1 pivot pin, this large pivot pin, will pull out. That will allow you to lift that head out with a cross member and you can take the cross member out and then the slider. Let's go ahead and put the lynch pin back in here. There we go. It does come with this included plastic lube plate that you put on your kingpin of your fifth wheel, helps it glide smoothly onto the hitch during hookup. It also includes the pins and clips right here that you attach this to the rails, and it also includes these rubber, there's 4 rubber sound dampeners. They have a little slot in them. Basically, what you would do with these is where the slider drops down onto the rails, there's tabs on it, this would go where the tab is and it will give you a rubber dampener between the slider and the rails. It helps eliminate any rattles or noise. It does have a 4" height adjustment. Let me turn this a little bit just to show you. If you look on the side cross member right here, on the cross member itself there is a range of 3 holes so you can move those holes up or down to give you a 4" height adjustment. Basically that will get you, for your particular application, you want your hitch head measurement from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head to be a certain measurement so this will give you a range of anywhere from 17 1/2" to 21 1/2". As I mentioned, the base rails, the mounting kits are sold separately. This will work on industry standard rails made by Curt, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Pro Series, Reese, and Valley. We do recommend on the mounting brackets to make installation easier to use a vehicle specific or a custom fit bracket kit and the reason we do that is, it's not available in all applications, what I'd recommend is on our website put in your year and model vehicle and see if there is a custom, vehicle specific bracket kit. If there is it cuts the installation time about in half because the brackets right here that go to the frames will already have holes drilled in it to line up with holes in your truck frame. Saves you a lot of time when compared to a universal bracket kit. This is a sturdy steel construction, has a durable carbide powder coat finish. Again, the specs on it, gross towing weight capacity is 16,000 lbs. Vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 4,000 lbs. The slider does move 12" front to back for extra clearance and again, the height adjustment goes anywhere from 17 1/2" to 21 1/2". First I want to show you how this kingpin would go into the hitch. Let's go ahead and remove the pin and clip and then what you can do is, to uncouple it you just pull this handle out and move it towards the cab of tow vehicle and it will slide out the kingpin. Then you can see it's ready to couple. I'm going to turn it around. I mentioned those 3 point color code indicator system. We spin this around, you'll be able to see it on the back of the head right here. Right now, with the kingpin out, you can see yellow is showing, that means it's ready to be coupled. It also shows you green, When that green shows there it means it's ready in the tow position. If it shows red it's uncoupled. You don't want to go anywhere. Just to show you, I'm going to slide this kingpin in and when I do that you'll see that it changes. That color you can see from your cab would be green now. The handle's slid up, locked into position and you just drop your pin and clip through, lock it and your ready to go or you put a padlock through there if you want to. On the slider itself, it is the same way. It does have color coding. You can see over here, the green indicator. When this is showing means it's ready to tow, so it's in the locked towing position. Over here, if the red would show, that means it's not ready to tow and basically I just want to show you how you would do that. Here's your handle for your slider. You just pull this out. Let's spin it back around so we have the right positioning, not to confuse you. If we spin this around where this is where I'm standing would be the cab of your tow vehicle and that would be the back of your truck. If you want to put it into maneuvering position, you want to slide it back to the tailgate to gain more clearance when you're doing sharp turns, what you'll do is pull out on this slider handle and when you do that you just turn it a little bit to counterclockwise position. It moves that tab to the front. What that will allow you to do is when you go into maneuver position you can see the hitch will slide and when it reaches the full 12", it will lock into position. Then, when you're done maneuvering and you're ready to get on the road to tow, all you want to do is same way, pull this out but just turn it clockwise this time. Move the tab towards the tow vehicle. With it that way, then when you're pulling away it would slide into the towing position, moves it closer to the cab of your tow vehicle, boom, locks into position. The green shows here and nothing over here. That should do it for the review on part number C16521, the Curt Q16 Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, on the Curt R16 Slider, with a 16,000 lb weight capacity. .

Overall I am impressed with the product and the service etrailer provides. The shipping was fast and the prices vs local competitors was cheaper. I actually installed the same day I received the hitch. Unfortunately my fith wheel head has a small dent in it, I would assume from shipping, and my hardware bag was ripped open scattering throughout the box. To my surprise no hardware was missing. The dent did aggravate me a little as to the price of the product, but will not effect the performance. Etrailer did double box all three packages the shipped which was nice, however I'm not sure they'll make a profit with the amount of staples used in packaging haha. Overall happy to have great reviews on great products to help aid in the decision of my purchase of the Curt slider 16k fith wheel. Fits nicely in my 2013 Silverado 2500 short bed with my fold back cover still functioning when not in use. I did find during installation that the heat shield worked best for me bent up than cut, also I did remove the wheels for easier access but not a necessity. There might need to be clarity on the hardware not being used via instructions, and on the bed rib spacers on the diagram. Very pleased with my purchase and will recommend etrailer in the future. 479630

This hitch is nice. It took longer than expected to install but I am very happy with it. It works great. 488555

I received my new hitch, slider package and puck system legs for my Ram 2500 and had it installed in about 2 hours. Backed up to my camper and connected with no problems once I got the camper king pin at the correct height. I like the overlapping jaws on this hitch much better my old hitch which didnt overlap. This just feels more secure. The hitch released and uncoupled with no problems. I'll be taking a trip with it soon and will know more about how it feels with 11,000 pounds connected to it but for now, very happy with my purchase. I cant submitt my review without adding some kudo's to etrailer and their customer service team. I had ordered a different hitch but had second thoughts as to it being a good match for my truck. One call to customer service confirmed my thoughts and i had a different system on order and delivered in 3 days. Awesome team. 488531

Still very happy with this setup. Have pulled our camper from South Georgia to the panhandle twice and as far north as Michigan since my first review. It works great and feels very secure when connected.

Great hitch used it on a few trips already driven over 3,000 miles. Love the dual jaws and the adjustability, my truck sits a bit higher and I was able to adjust this down to get it where it needed to be- even with the Reese adapter plate(see photo). The polyurethane is also a nice touch, makes the ride a little more cozy then a standard hitch. Use with the provided lube plate 355598

This is my first fifth wheel. I have a short bed so I got the package deal with the hitch and the slider. Took me about 5 hrs to install with the custom mounting brackets and rails for my 2015 chevy 2500 HD. Everything went as the instructions said without any issues. I have only pulled my RV with it one time just to try it out. Felt very smooth no rattles or pops as I have herd with other hitches. So far I like it a lot. 414028

Easy install and simple to use. Very helpful staff at ETRAILER! The warning labels were damaged in shipping but that is minor. 474188

First off I just got done installing the hitch and I hooked on my 35ft fith wheel trailer and went for a ride with windows down sun roof open and not a single rattle , clank , or noise from the bed of the truck with this hitch . It was easy to assemble but I did have one spot where the paint got chipped on the slider during shipping so I just touched it up . Very satisfied with hitch it latches automatically when you back in to it and the slider part works like it should . 294820

The products have worked flawlessly no problems and thank you for checking back with me its nice when a company cares about there costumers. Next time I need any trailer products I will definitely be contacting etrailer.

The Curt system is really high quality. No issues at all putting the system in. One thing I do like is the position of the plate handle. It does not stick upward and is even with the plate. By designing the handle that way I can still cover my bed with my tonneau cover where other manufactures the handle was higher than the bed rail. The price was excellent and dealing with customer service was the same. 380677

Fantastic! Real smooth when coupling and un-coupling

Very nice product, easy to use and have towed trailer over 11, 000 miles since purchase 722185

- C16521

smooth operation , great hitch have not used the slider. may never need the slider option there does seem to be to much play on the slider , that makes the hitch bounce when you take off and slow down 692618

- C16521

Could not be happier. ...shipping arriving on time as scheduled, with other options available to your needs. Shipping boxes little tore up but exspected as it is heavy, but product boxes undamaged along with the items.. Assembly easy with directions included, and a video to help if needed. ..or staff to call to get you through. Had existing rails to mount into, with the side mounting right in...head assembly fit into the slide without any issues. You will have to make your height adjustments depending on your needs for your application as I did.. First pull I made from last hitch was a 100% noticeable difference. Hook up and disconect with ease without any issues. I will HIGHLY recommend etrailer for any needs to anyone they may have or products needing. Thanks etrailer. ..you will be hearing from me down the road if needed for any of my RV needs 677004

it was the correct one and works fine 669420

Great product. Easy to assemble and fits perfectly in standard bed rails on 22” center. I have coupled up with it but have not towed with it yet. Have a short trip of about 400 miles coming up in about 2 weeks. So far I am very happy with the way it couples and slides. Unlike my old square tube slider this one is very smooth and the price was right . Ordered late afternoon on Thursday and it delivered on Monday. Great shipping time. I like everything about it especially the fact that when you uncouple it is automatically set to recouple. 662531

The ease of use with this hitch is unsurpassed. It slipped right into the rails in my bed and towed like a dream. No chucking or banging when starting/stopping. I almost forgot I had almost 11,000 pounds behind me. Thank you Curt and etrailer! 639138

- C16521

I am very pleased with my 5th wheel hitch.the install of the rails went well, and the assembly of the hitch itself also went well.first time towing 5th wheel no problem. I thought it was great that it was delivered promptly to my home no charge freight, that I believe saved me a lot money. I look forward to doing more towing this summer knowing the hitch is quality . Thank you for the follow up,I would recommend e trailer to anybody shopping for trailering equipment. 634449

Installation of whole package, Hitch, Rails and Elect connection took me about 8 hrs. Took my time and had to back step a few time. But, Instructions were easy to under stand and components are high quality. 634473

- C16521

I just finished the installation, the product appears to be well designed and built, We'll see how it works when I start using it. I see no reason it won't be ok. The packaging was pretty beat up when it arrived but everything was ok . 625485

- C16521

The curt a16 fifth wheel slider hitch is a great hitch. I just used it on its maiden voyage today. It is built very heavy duty and the ease of use is great. The slider mechanism is much easier to use than the normal square tube sliders and I like the double jaw hitch head. It gets 5 stars from me. 619766

- C16521

Works great! 609764

- C16521

Overall on a flat road the hitch is smooth and handles the 13,500 weight it's pulling with a 3500 HD dually diesel. Going up or down hills or stopping and starting the hitch slams back an forth with a grinding metal sound. It hits hard. We are told that's the way it was built. It seems a simple fix of some bushings or rubber stoppers would be a plus. The resale value on hitches is poor so we will keep a few years then upgrade again. 604765

This is an excellent hitch that features an interlocking 2-jaw design so that the jaw mechanism wraps completely around the king pin. This provides an extremely secure connection to the trailer but it also allows for a smooth, quiet ride during travel. • Comparing Sliding Hitch vs. Sidewinder for 40-Foot Toy Hauler Towed by 2014 Short-Bed Ram 2500
In your application with a roughly 40-foot toy hauler towed by your short-bed Ram 2500 a Sidewinder replacement pin box is the way to go. A sliding 5th wheel hitch like the Curt Q16 # C16521 can give a short bed truck like your 2014 Ram 2500 up to 12-inches of additional turning clearance. On the other hand, a Sidewinder replacement 5th wheel pin box, when used with a fixed 5th wheel hitch, gives you a full 22-inches of additional turning clearance. Sidewinders are made as replacements...

  • How Much Does Curt A16 Fifth Wheel Hitch C16521 Weigh
The total weight for the Curt hitch part # C16521 that you referenced is 193 lbs. Slider hitches in general are pretty heavy since there is a lot of moving parts which have to be very strong. The Reese 16 part # RP30047 is an excellent hitch that weighs in at 176 lb which is a bit lighter weight. This hitch works well because it has a round tube slider which will operate smoother than a square tube and because it has a great 2 jaw system that provides excellent king pin contact.

  • Do I Have to Have a Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch in a Short Bed Truck
You do not have to use a sliding 5th wheel hitch in a short bed truck. In many cases, truck beds shorter than 8 ft do not have enough clearance between the trailer and truck to execute sharp turns. This is why sliding hitches were invented. Due to the popularity of short bed trucks, trailer manufacturers started making more 5th wheel trailers with angled or indented noses so they do not contact your truck cab when turning such as the Highland Ridge Light 5th wheel trailer. The downside...

  • How Much Side-to-Side Movement of 5th Wheel Trailer is Acceptable When Using Curt Hitch # C16521
It is important for any trailer to be level when hitched, whether a bumper-pull or a 5th wheel, and it is also necessary to have enough clearance at the bed rails for the trailer's overhang. The linked diagram shows the recommended minimum clearances for a 5th wheel a the bed rails, tailgate and bumper. Because the Curt hitch # C16521 has a cushioned head, it will tend to provide more sideways movement than a non-cushioned type. It may be possible to increase the height of the trailer...
