Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

A16 Two-Piece Interlocking Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A16 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

R16 Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' and 6-1/2' beds, this roller helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a roller to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

Non-Binding Design

The round-tube design of this slider allows for relatively uninhibited movement of your fifth-wheel hitch. Because your hitch can glide smoothly and easily along the rods, there is less chance of binding.

With straight, flat contact points, as found with square-tube sliders, tension can build between the slider and the hitch when your truck and trailer are somewhat out of line or are on uneven ground. As a result, it can be difficult to properly activate the slider when your truck and trailer are not in a straight line.

With a round-tube slider, there is more give between the contacting surfaces, allowing better mobility of the hitch system. Fewer corners means less tension buildup. Activating a round-tube slider is easier, and operation as a whole is smoother.

Curt rebranded this fifth-wheel trailer hitch by changing its name from Q16 to A16 in 2016. All features and specifications remained the same.

Video Transcript for Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Ram 2500

Today, on our 2017 Ram 2500 we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with R16 Slider, part number C16521. Here's what our 5th wheel hitch looks like fully installed. It's going to mount using our base rails here and it's going to allow us to tow a 5th wheel trailer. This is a six foot bed truck. If you've ever towed a 5th wheel with a short bed truck, you know that it comes in handy to have a slider like we have here whenever you're making tight turns. We come to this handle and we pull out. We can turn it and our 5th wheel's going to slide back 12" to give us extra clearance so we don't have to worry about our 5th wheel trailer hitting our cab. The slider is a nonbinding slider, so no matter what angle you're pulling your trailer at, it's going to be able to slide freely back and forth. Whenever we're done making that tight turn and getting around the corner, we can straighten our trailer out, straighten our truck out, and our slider's going to slide right back and lock into position. The jaw here is a two-piece jaw.

It's going to make a full 360 degree contact with the king pin. If we come to our tethered handle over here we're going to have a safety pin that's going to make sure that our handle is locked in the closed position, or if we open it up and we remove the pin, we can slide our handle back and we'll open up our jaws. Another nice feature is right here on our jaw we're going to have built-in grease zerks, so that way whenever we need to do maintenance on our 5th wheel, it's going to be that much easier just to reach them right there. The head itself does articulate backwards, towards the front, and left and right, which is going to come in handy because it's going to make it easier to hook up to your trailer even if you're on unlevel ground. Here on the side you can see we have multiple hole locations, as well as on the head itself. This is going to be able to determine how high you want your 5th wheel head to sit. It's going to go all the way from 17-1/2" all the way up to 21-1/2". Now, a nice feature that's also a safety feature is right here at the back of the head. If we look, we're going to have a green circle right here in the middle.

If we look over to the right, it's going to tell us that we're ready to tow. Depending on where the jaws, if they're locked open, if they're in the couple position, or what position it's in this dot here is going to change and it's either going to be red saying, "You're uncoupled. Do not tow," green, "You're good to go," or yellow saying that you need to couple or it's not fully locked into place. Now, our slider also has a color indicator. Here, on the passenger side it's letting us know the green indicator means it's ready to tow. So if you see this green piece sticking out, our slider is locked in the towed position.

If we come to the driver's side where our handle on our slide is, we'll see that there's a red stripe and this sign right here next to it is going to say, "Red indicator. Do not tow." That's letting us know that it's not locked into the towing position, but it is able to slide into the maneuvering position. Now, our hitch is going to feature 16,000 pounds of gross trailer weight rating and the vertical load limit is going to come in right at 4,000 pounds. I do want to mention you always want to double check with your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure your truck can handle that. Now, our 5th wheel slider here, it is compatible with all industry above-the-bed rail kits. The safety pin that goes into our handle here, we also have the option of putting a padlock here. That way our trailer is secured to our hitch. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how we get it installed. I already have my slider in place. The way it's going to attach to our rails on our bed here, is we're going to have a couple of pins and clips and on each corner it's going to go through.

I'm going to take my pin, slide it through, now I can secure it with my cotter pin. Now that we have this pin in place, we're going to go ahead and put all of them in place. To begin the installation on our head, we're going to take the handle assembly here. We're going to slide it onto our handle, but before we slide it all the way on we're going to take the spring that they provide in our kit and we're going to slide it into this slot, into this section right here, we're going to hold it with our finger, that way we can slide the handle over the spring and we can line up our holes here. We're going to need to get a bolt through here. The trick to get this spring to move out of the way without having to finagle a screwdriver or anything like that is if we take our handle and we push it all the way in nice and tight, then we can come back very slowly pulling our handle back and it will give just enough tension to grab that spring. Now, we're going to take one of supplied cap bolts here, we're going to drop it down into position, and we're going to pull the handle back slightly so we can line up the other hole on the backside here and we drop our bolt into place as well. We're going to take one of our M8 bolts, here, with a lock washer, we're going to slide it through. Now, we're going to pull our handle back slightly to line up this hole in the back and we're going to do the same thing. We're going to take one of our cap bolts with a lock washer and then drop it down. Now, we're going to take this block that's in the kit, it's going to have three holes. Two of them are going to have threads in them and one of them's just going to be open like this. We're going to take it and line up the two threaded holes with our bolts and that large hole is going to go towards the large hole at the end of our handle here. We're just going to loosely line it up and then we're going to come back and using a 5mm Allen we're going to go ahead and start tightening down our bolts. Just want to get each one started hand-tight. We don't have to worry about cross-threading our bolts, and then we can snug everything up. With our handle in place, we can put our safety latch in, put the clip into place. That way our handle's locked and we can get ready to put our head into our truck bed. So, I have my 5th wheel on my slider now. We're going to have two holes on the front and the back of our slider. Each side is going to be mounted using two bolts and two lock nuts. In our application, we have a tonneau cover, so we are going to set this at the lowest setting. We can go ahead and push our bolt through from the outside going in, making sure that it's going through our slider in our 5th wheel head and then we can thread on our lock nut. Then we can do the same thing on the back end. Now that we have this side done, we can go and repeat the same process on the other side. I'm going to go ahead and snug down all my hardware evenly before I torque it down to the final mount. I'm using a 21mm socket for the bolt and a 22mm wrench for the nut on the inside. Now that all my hardware's snug, I'm going to come back with a torque wrench and I'm going to torque all my bolts the specified amount in the instructions. We're going to repeat that for all the remaining bolts. With everything torqued down, we're ready to back up to our trailer and hit the road. That will finish up our look at the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with R16 Slider, part number C16521 on our 2017 Ram 2500.

I received my new hitch, slider package and puck system legs for my Ram 2500 and had it installed in about 2 hours. Backed up to my camper and connected with no problems once I got the camper king pin at the correct height. I like the overlapping jaws on this hitch much better my old hitch which didnt overlap. This just feels more secure. The hitch released and uncoupled with no problems. I'll be taking a trip with it soon and will know more about how it feels with 11,000 pounds connected to it but for now, very happy with my purchase. I cant submitt my review without adding some kudo's to etrailer and their customer service team. I had ordered a different hitch but had second thoughts as to it being a good match for my truck. One call to customer service confirmed my thoughts and i had a different system on order and delivered in 3 days. Awesome team. 488531

Still very happy with this setup. Have pulled our camper from South Georgia to the panhandle twice and as far north as Michigan since my first review. It works great and feels very secure when connected.

Great hitch used it on a few trips already driven over 3,000 miles. Love the dual jaws and the adjustability, my truck sits a bit higher and I was able to adjust this down to get it where it needed to be- even with the Reese adapter plate(see photo). The polyurethane is also a nice touch, makes the ride a little more cozy then a standard hitch. Use with the provided lube plate 355598

Easy install and simple to use. Very helpful staff at ETRAILER! The warning labels were damaged in shipping but that is minor. 474188

This is my first fifth wheel. I have a short bed so I got the package deal with the hitch and the slider. Took me about 5 hrs to install with the custom mounting brackets and rails for my 2015 chevy 2500 HD. Everything went as the instructions said without any issues. I have only pulled my RV with it one time just to try it out. Felt very smooth no rattles or pops as I have herd with other hitches. So far I like it a lot. 414028

Overall I am impressed with the product and the service etrailer provides. The shipping was fast and the prices vs local competitors was cheaper. I actually installed the same day I received the hitch. Unfortunately my fith wheel head has a small dent in it, I would assume from shipping, and my hardware bag was ripped open scattering throughout the box. To my surprise no hardware was missing. The dent did aggravate me a little as to the price of the product, but will not effect the performance. Etrailer did double box all three packages the shipped which was nice, however I'm not sure they'll make a profit with the amount of staples used in packaging haha. Overall happy to have great reviews on great products to help aid in the decision of my purchase of the Curt slider 16k fith wheel. Fits nicely in my 2013 Silverado 2500 short bed with my fold back cover still functioning when not in use. I did find during installation that the heat shield worked best for me bent up than cut, also I did remove the wheels for easier access but not a necessity. There might need to be clarity on the hardware not being used via instructions, and on the bed rib spacers on the diagram. Very pleased with my purchase and will recommend etrailer in the future. 479630

The Curt system is really high quality. No issues at all putting the system in. One thing I do like is the position of the plate handle. It does not stick upward and is even with the plate. By designing the handle that way I can still cover my bed with my tonneau cover where other manufactures the handle was higher than the bed rail. The price was excellent and dealing with customer service was the same. 380677

First off I just got done installing the hitch and I hooked on my 35ft fith wheel trailer and went for a ride with windows down sun roof open and not a single rattle , clank , or noise from the bed of the truck with this hitch . It was easy to assemble but I did have one spot where the paint got chipped on the slider during shipping so I just touched it up . Very satisfied with hitch it latches automatically when you back in to it and the slider part works like it should . 294820

I have only used the hitch on one short trip but at this point I am very happy with it. Shipping was fast but shipping boxes were torn open, all the parts were ok. I followed the instruction video on etrailer site and there was an error in it that took me a few minutes to work out. When installing the handle after you place the two bolts in the holes and start to put the bottom plate on the video shows putting it on upside down. I kept trying this and checking the video and it did not work, finally took it apart and looked and could see the problem. Overall very happy with everything I have ever bought from etrailer. 447726

Could not be happier. ...shipping arriving on time as scheduled, with other options available to your needs. Shipping boxes little tore up but exspected as it is heavy, but product boxes undamaged along with the items.. Assembly easy with directions included, and a video to help if needed. ..or staff to call to get you through. Had existing rails to mount into, with the side mounting right in...head assembly fit into the slide without any issues. You will have to make your height adjustments depending on your needs for your application as I did.. First pull I made from last hitch was a 100% noticeable difference. Hook up and disconect with ease without any issues. I will HIGHLY recommend etrailer for any needs to anyone they may have or products needing. Thanks etrailer. ..you will be hearing from me down the road if needed for any of my RV needs 677004

Great product. Easy to assemble and fits perfectly in standard bed rails on 22” center. I have coupled up with it but have not towed with it yet. Have a short trip of about 400 miles coming up in about 2 weeks. So far I am very happy with the way it couples and slides. Unlike my old square tube slider this one is very smooth and the price was right . Ordered late afternoon on Thursday and it delivered on Monday. Great shipping time. I like everything about it especially the fact that when you uncouple it is automatically set to recouple. 662531

The curt a16 fifth wheel slider hitch is a great hitch. I just used it on its maiden voyage today. It gets 5 stars from me. 619766

Overall on a flat road the hitch is smooth and handles the 13,500 weight it's pulling with a 3500 HD dually diesel. Going up or down hills or stopping and starting the hitch slams back an forth with a grinding metal sound. It hits hard. We are told that's the way it was built. It seems a simple fix of some bushings or rubber stoppers would be a plus. The resale value on hitches is poor so we will keep a few years then upgrade again. 604765

Great service, great products. Along with the slide hitch I also got the rails and brackets for my truck. It was a perfect fit. The only difficulty was tightening the bolts going through the bed to the brackets. There’s only about an inch clearance. The only thing I would change would be flipping the bolts so the nuts were easy to get to in the bed. However I was afraid it would compromise strength and safety. Ordered on Monday, delivered on Wednesday. And shipping was free!!! Awesome for a nearly 300lbs shipment. 601499

Beware if purchasing this hitch and oem prep rails. Good smooth head. But with oem rail system from curt you will not get the hitch head adjusted low enough. Description states 17-1/2” low but with rails lowest is 20-1/2”. Had to buy different head. 576373

The product is great! Seems solid and extremely functional. It's perfect for my short bed Ram 3500. My only concern was with the shipping of my order. As expected the packaging was literally shredded inside the boxes where the hitch parts were tumbling around. Thankfully no real damage occurred to any of parts in all three boxes. Thank you etrailer for a great product at an affordable cost. Just be aware of the damage in the shipping area. 496573

I am giving this Curt hitch 5 stars. The bed rail kit was easy to install on my 2005 GMC 2500HD. Watching the video certainly was a huge help. The hitch is solid and of good quality. I installed it in a couple evenings after work. We went and picked up our new camper that Saturday. The hitched pulled nicely, no clunking or banging was heard. And that was pulling the camper 6 hours home. Highly recommend this hitch! 494811

Easily installed, haven't used in towing yet but I know it will be an improvement over my old Pro 15000 490923

Outstanding. No slack in the hitch as with the Reese that I had. I love it.

We love our Curt A16 5th Wheel Hitch W/r16 Slider that we purchased last year through etrailer.com. This hitch is a top quality, well-made hitch. It's very easy to hitch and unhitch. We couldn't be happier. 487214

Called because a bolt holding the roller wheel broke. After the lady helping me figured out that that bolt wasn't sold separately since it was part of the roller I was figuring over $300 for a new roller assembly but she said they had one that had been used as a demo and it was only $200 with free shipping so I got it in two days. It took a good deal of time/effort as she tried to see if they bolt was somehow sold separately which was well appreciated. 485478

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for 2017 Ram 2500 Short Bed with Factory Rail Kit Puck System
  • We have a number of options available for your 2017 Ram 2500 with factory rail kit and short bed. You can use any industry standard size 5th sliding 5th wheel hitch using an adapter like the Reese 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Ram OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package - 25,000 lbs # RP30154. Curt has an adapter for your rail kit that is only compatible with their hitches # C16022, but their hitches are also compatible with the Reese adapter. For a hitch, I recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel...

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2018 Chevy 2500 Silverado with Short Bed and Factory Pucks
  • For your 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the factory pucks, I recommend the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 20K # BWRVK3770 for your short bed. This is rated higher than the 16K you needed as a minimum and is able to be installed in two pieces. It is one of our most popular sliding hitches for the factory rail kit/puck system. Another option I recommend is the Curt A16 5th Wheel Slider # C16521 along with the specific adapter...

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2018 Ram 3500 Mega Cab Short Bed with Factory Prep Package
  • For a perfect fit in your 2018 Ram 3500 with factory rails, I recommend the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider for Ram Towing Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 20K # BWRVK3670. This slider is an easy fit designed specifically for your truck. This hitch is made in the USA and has 12 inches of travel front to back. There are other 5th wheel hitches that will work but they require an adapter. For an auto sliding option, you can use the rail adapter # DM6099 and then hitch...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch For 2017 Ram 2500 With Factory Prep Package
  • For your 2017 Ram 2500 with Factory Prep package, I recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16520-16021. This will allow you to have a clean bed when not in use and easily install this hitch that is capable of pulling your 13000 lb loaded trailer with MORyde pin box. You may also be interested in the 5th Wheel wiring harness # C56000, to put a second 7 way in the bed of your truck for easy accessibility. If you have...

  • Difference Between Curt Q16 and E16 Fifth Wheel Hitch Sliders
  • The Q series of Curt fifth wheel hitches are considered to be the nicer Curt fifth wheel hitch when compared to the E16 hitch. Biggest difference being the jaw design. The E16 # 16516 uses a slide bar jaw design that allows quite a bit more movement than the Q16 (now called A16) # C16521 which uses a 360 degree contact jaw.

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch For Short Bed Truck With Rails Installed
  • The rails in your 2005 Ford F-250 with 6-3/4 foot bed are standard rails compatible with most hitches. Because you have a short bed, you will need a sliding hitch. There are a few options for you, but I'll give you a recommendation for an auto-slide and a manual sliding hitch. The reason you will need a sliding hitch is because the clearance between your truck and trailer is limited due to the short box, so you want to make sure you have the ability to turn in tight spaces without having...

  • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2017 GMC Denali 2500 with Factory Prep Kit & 6.5-Ft Bed
  • For your 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 with factory 5th wheel prep and 6-1/2-foot bed you will need a slider type hitch to provide enough turning clearance for low-speed turns. All suitable options are shown on the linked page. Since your trailer weight is in the range of 11K, I suggest the Curt 16K-rated hitch # C16521 along with the matching installation kit # C16023. The install kit drops right into your factory pucks and the hitch then drops right in to the install kit. This Curt hitch...

If you need additional clearance to stay level, you would want to consider a king pin replacement; I've added a link to our page with all of our replacement king pins for you to take a look at. • Recommended Fifth Wheel Hitches for 2018 and 2019 Ford F-250 and F-350 Trucks
  • Hello, When you say doing a fleet of vehicles with the fifth wheel prep package are you referring to simply adding fifth wheel hitches to these trucks that have the prep package? If so I would only need to know the bed size (in order to know if you need sliding hitches or not) and what capacity (16K, 20K, 24K) you are looking for.

  • Comparing Curt 16023 and Demco 6194 Fifth Wheel Rail Adapters
  • Each of the fifth wheel rail adapters you mentioned, the Demco # DM6194 and Curt # C16023 will offer you complete security for the hitches that fit on them. The Demco works by turning the locking plate with the thumb screw, which rotates the feet of the adapter locking it into place. The biggest difference between these two adapters is going to be the hitches they fit, which is generally the deciding factor in the adapter they have. The Demco adapter can accommodate any fifth-wheel hitch...

  • Recommended 5th-Wheel Hitch for 2017 Ram 2500 with 6.4 Foot Bed
  • For your 2017 Ram HD Mega Cab with a 6.4 foot bed that does not have the factory rail kit, I recommend looking at a sliding 5th-wheel hitch to provide the additional clearance that will be needed for making tight turns. The Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16521 along with the Custom Installation Kit # C16427-204 is a great option for towing your Jayco Jayflight with your Ram. • 5th Wheel Hitch With Maximum Height for Most Trailer-to-Truck Bed Rail Clearance
  • Thank you for the photo of your 2016 Ram 3500's bed rail which sits 59-inches above ground. You are correct that the recommended minimum clearance between a bed rail and the underside of the trailer's overhang is 5 to 6-inches, as shown in the linked diagram. Since your trailer sits lower than your truck you'll need some height adjustment to tow safely. By chance is your truck lifted? Lifted pickups are not ideal for 5th wheel towing for the reason you have already discovered. Even some...

  • The Reese Elite underbed rail kits are the same as the Ford factory rail kits like you mentioned, but Reese does not offer an underbed rail kit that fits your truck. If you wanted this style of rail in a 2019 Ford F-250 without the factory rail kit you'd have to get the rail kit from a Ford dealer and have them install it. • Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch Options for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch
  • A sliding hitch is necessary for a short bed truck if you don't have a Sidewinder style rotating pin box to give you the turning clearance you need so your trailer doesn't make contact with the cab of your truck. Although the B&W Companion Slider # BWRVK3400-5W is the one of the best options for a slider, you are correct that you do have other options. The biggest issue is that you can't have 5th wheel rails and your gooseneck installed at the same time due to the mounting locations,...

If you don't already have a 5th wheel hitch, the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16120 or part # C16521 is one of my personal favorites. • 5th Wheel Hitch for 2002 Silverado 2500 HD with 6-1/2-foot Bed
  • The best type of truck to pull a larger 5th wheel trailer such as a 39-foot Jayco is a 1-ton long-bed. Long beds avoid the issue of too little turning clearance and 1-tons will have the power needed to pull a heavy trailer without strain. They also avoid the need for slider hitches which usually require you to get out of the truck to release the slide before making a tight turn in a campground. Trucks with a 6-1/2-foot bed will require you to use a sliding type hitch unless the trailer...

But if the truck also has the center hole for a gooseneck ball you can use # C60692 to add a ball and safety chain loops. • Are Demco Base Plates with 4 Mounting Slots Compatible with Industry Standard Hitches
  • The older Demco base rails you have installed on your truck are likely just missing the two inner slots that are usually found on industry standard rails. These inner slots, on rails that have them, are spaced 10 inches apart on center and really only used for a gooseneck plate. There aren't any current fifth-wheel hitches that would use these slots. With this in mind, as long as the Demco rails on your truck feature industry-standard spacing for the 4 slots they do have, they will work...

  • Sounds like you have the Curt EZr gooseneck hitch part # C611-624 installed in your 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 short bed based on what you described. To install a slider gooseneck hitch you'll need an X5 adapter part # C16220 so that you have a set of rails for the hitch to install in. • What is the Height Adjustment Range for the Curt A16 Fifth Wheel Hitch
  • The Curt # C16521 5th wheel hitch you mentioned is indeed height adjustable from 17-1/2 to 21-1/2 inches in height. Some of the bed sides on todays trucks are pretty tall (like the Ford F Series), so the hitch heights needed to increase as well. To determine the necessary hitch height so your 5th wheel tows level, jack the 5th wheel so it's level. Measure from the bottom of the skid plate to the ground (not the king pin). Take the bed height above the ground and add the hitch height...

  • Pros and Cons of 5th Wheel Hitch With a Slide Bar Jaw Versus a Dual Jaw Hitch
  • The difference between a slide bar jaw and a dual jaw is how tightly the fifth wheel king pin is held. Both do a good job securing the king pin, preventing it from coming loose. The Dual Jaw will hold the king pin much more tightly, preventing the king pin from rattling around in the pin box. Any movement of the king pin in the hitch jaws will be easily felt and heard in the truck cab. Every time the you brake or accelerate, if there's any movement in the hitch jaws-you're gonna feel...

  • How to Determine Fifth Wheel Hitch Height Setting Needed
  • You will want the hitch to be set at the height that 1) allows the trailer to be level, and 2) allows you a minimum of 6 inches between the bottom of the trailer loft and the top of the bed rails. The fifth wheel hitches offer several inches of up and down adjustment to help accomplish this. Many pin boxes are also height adjustable. To do this you will want to measure from the top of your truck bed floor to the ground and then measure from the plate of the pin box on the trailer down...
