Getting there is half the fun, right? Not if you're being bumped, jerked, jammed, and pushed around from the chucking, road shock, and bounce that occurs as you tow your fifth-wheel trailer or RV. And imagine the costly wear and tear on your trailer as it endures that rocky ride.

Put the fun back into your trip and ease the stress on your trailer by replacing your factory pin box with the Trailair Flex Air pin box. The internal air bag and built-in shock work together to cushion your ride, improve handling, and limit strain on both your truck and your trailer. But what sets the Flex Air apart from other air ride pin boxes is the addition of a pivoting head. This head, along with its built-in rubber compound, provides additional cushion, absorbs road shock, and reduces chucking for a significantly improved ride.

Rubber Compound and Internal Air Bag Absorb Road Shock

Lippert Flex Air pin box has a rubberized pivoting head

A heavy-duty rubber compound is built into the head assembly of the Flex Air pin box. This rubber is the first defense against road shock. It helps to absorb the bumps and vibrations experienced when towing a fifth-wheel trailer over rough roads. Standard pin boxes without any type of shock absorption transfer road shock to your trailer, resulting in potential damage to the trailer and an overall bumpy ride. The shock-absorbing rubber inside the Flex Air takes the beating so there's less wear and tear on your trailer or RV and you get a smoother ride.

Lippert Flex Air pin box has a shock and air bag

Because the rubber may not be able to absorb all of the road shock that you experience, the Flex Air also implements air ride technology to virtually eliminate shock. When you encounter uneven terrain on your trip or hit a pothole on the highway, the Flex Air pin box compresses vertically, similar to how a pair of scissor blades closes in on each other. This compression transfers the road shock and vibrations to the internal air bag, saving your fifth-wheel hitch, trailer, and tow vehicle frame from enduring a rocky ride.

A built-in strut, or shock, controls the Flex Air's compression so that the internal air bag doesn't burst. The strut also causes the pin box to appropriately rebound without any bounce, and positions it to be ready for the next bump in the road.

Pivoting Head Reduces Chucking

Lippert Flex Air pin box has a pivoting head that reduces chucking

The pivoting head on Flex Air allows for controlled back and forth movement of the king pin to reduce the uncomfortable jarring known as chucking. Unlike a rigid pin box that has little give at the point where the trailer and the hitch are connected, the Flex Air can pivot slightly to compensate for those times that your trailer suddenly pushes or pulls on your tow vehicle. Because the pin box head - not the king pin itself - is moving, the chucking that often occurs when the king pin jerks around inside the hitch is significantly reduced.

Simple Setup and Installation

First, simply remove your existing Lippert 0719 pin box from your trailer. The Flex Air uses the same bolts that held on your original pin box so no additional hardware is required for installation. Plus, the Flex Air pin box comes out of the box ready to be put on your trailer, so no assembly is needed. Because the Flex Air is quite heavy, you should put it on an elevated surface or have a friend help you support its weight during installation.

The internal air bag should be inflated after the Flex Air pin box has been mounted on your trailer. Using the air intake valve, inflate the air bag until the outer cylinder of the shock rises high enough to fully expose the yellow inflation indicator sticker.

Video Transcript for Lippert Components Fifth Wheel King Pin - Pin Box Upgrade - LC328484 Review

Today we're going to review part number LC328484. This is the Lippert Trailair Flex Air fifth wheel pin box. This is designed to replace the Lippert 0719 pin boxes. Has an 18,000 pound weight capacity. Now this is an air ride pin box with a pivoting. Head, which will replace your standard Lippert 0719 pin box that's on your fifth wheel trailer.

It will cushion your ride, improve your handling, and limit the strain on your truck and your trailer. It does drastically reduce the chucking, which is the back and forth movement, and it will virtually eliminate the bounce and jarring which is the porpoising also it's called that you'll get with your truck and trailer. Does have a internal air bag right down in here that will absorb the road shock. If you'll notice, there's a pivot point right here so this will give you a scissor-like motion which allows the pin box to compress, which will compensate for jarring and bounce. Also has a built-in shock right here on the end. This will ensure that this pin box rebounds, keeps the air bag from breaking down.

You also notice on the bottom of the part here there is another pivot point. That's because it has a pivoting head. This head part right here that the kingpin is attached to will move up and down. This will limit the chucking by allowing controlled movement of your kingpin within your hitch. Also between this pivoting head and the bottom here there is a rubber compound built into the head that will absorb the road shock and helps reduce the wear and tear on your trailer. Now the internal air bag right here, when you go to inflate it a good guideline is what you first want to do is make sure this pin box is mounted on your trailer.

Once it's all mounted then you go up to the top where the intake valve is, remove the cap here, and then just inflate this air bag until the outer cylinder right here of the shock will rise high enough to fully expose this yellow inflation indicator sticker. On the inner tube there's a yellow sticker and it says inflate to this point. There's two arrows point up. What it's telling you is put air in this until this outer tube will rise right above that sticker. That will give you a good starting point when you put air in your bag here. Now this whole pin box is a black powder coat finish, provides a nice rust resistance.

It's made of a sturdy steel construction. The kingpin right here on the bottom will connect to any fifth wheel trailer hitch. It is a bolt-on installation. The bolt pattern you can see right here. There's no assembly required. When you receive it it's all ready to be bolted on. This part is made in the USA. Again, the specs on this, it's designed to replace the Lippert 0719 fifth wheel pin box. Weight capacity is 18,000 pounds. Now I do want to give you some pin box measurements. The critical measurements are going to be this bolt pattern measurements. This is what you want to make sure your measurements will match up to that so this will replace your Lippert 0719 pin box that's on your trailer. The first measurements going to be the horizontal distance between the bolts. If you take the front row of bolts and the rear row, if we're going to measure I mark the center, so center of the front row hole to the center of the rear. We put a ruler on that. Should measure 7-3/4". Now the vertical distance is going to be measured from the center of the hole to the center of the hole right above it. On all these holes center to center should be 2". The bolt hole diameter is 5/8". The other critical measurement is going to be the pin box width. I'm going to turn this so I can show you where to measure that. Let's just rotate the pin box around here. There we go. You want to measure outside to outside, so if we put a ruler on that right at 12" would be your pin box width. You want to make sure the width on yours will be 12". Now I'm going to rotate this back. I'm going to give you a couple other measurements that will help you. There we go. I'm going to give you the measurement from the center of the king pin. We're going to use right here the center of this pivot bolt because that's where the center of the king pin would roughly be. Measure from there to the center of the front row of bolts and then from the center of the kingpin to the rear row of bolts. If we put a ruler on that, try to show you here if you go center to the front row is about 14-3/4". To the rear row is going to be right at about 22-1/2". Now one last note, when you use this Trailair Flex Air pin box this pinbox cannot be used with any type of gooseneck adapter. You just want to be aware of that. You do not want to use this with any type of gooseneck adapter. That should do it for the review on part number LC328484, the Lippert Trailair Flex Air fifth wheel pin box to replace the Lippert 0719 pin boxes, with an 18,000 pound weight capacity. .

The Flex Air does exactly what I wanted it to do. It absorbs the shock of bumps and transfers that energy to the hitch, not the truck or the fifth wheel. Installation was straight forward with a little bit of planning. It did require I adjust the fifth wheel hitch in my truck as this is a little longer than the original and extends downward more. I was able to modify the settings on my hitch to accommodate. Overall, I've happy I added this to my RV. 375017

Having not pulled a fifth wheel with a traditional pin box setup I have nothing to compare it to. Watching the suspension action over various road conditions I would have to assume that it is doing a very good job of stopping the transfer to the trailer. We have found that we have to keep an eye on the air pressure because it seems to lose air over time (months). We keep a portable air pump in the trailer to cover this situation. The only other observation I have is that the design does seem to carry the nose of the trailer a bit higher. My truck has had no suspension adjustments made to it and the hitch-head is set at it's lowest setting. I can't blame the pinbox alone because there are many contributing factors, but an element of consideration none-the-less. All in all it's a sturdy, well built, piece of hardware that adds a third layer of suspension to the traveling experience. The health of the trailer will definitely benefit from its use. I have had multiple comments made by other campers. 333916

This is some of the best money we ever spent. It truly makes a huge difference in the ride - even on the roughest roads and bridges. Wouldn't pull a long trailer without it now. The handling is so much better - the trailer doesn't try to 'drive' the truck for you. If you want a better, smoother ride - this is what you need. No more bucking felt. Install was very easy. Highly recommend this product - you won't be disappointed. 351642

What a difference this pin box made in towing my fifth wheel. Excellent product, makes towing a joy! Took the bumps and jerking out of towing. Went to 12 states and 14 National Parks up mountains and down back roads after installing this pin box. Put on over 12,000 Miles. It’s worth every penny I paid for it. Will never own a fifth wheel with out one. Thank you for making this wonderful product! 501084

I will be on the third flexair pin box when it gets here on the 21st of November 2016. The problem iIm having is with the lower roto flex portion. The rubber block shifts and I have talked to others with the same problem. Lippert has been great about the replacement, But the the hassle of replacing this three times in one year is not worth it. 318083

I have used my Flex Air for over one year and put around 3000 miles on it. I purchased this for one reason to reduce bucking when I it bumps in the road. I can safely say that it has virtually eliminated the bucking. It has also made the ride a lot smoother. I would highly recommend the Flex air. I did my own install of this product by my self. I am very happy with my Flex Air king pin. The customer service folks worked with me so I could have it before going on vacation. The old one came off and the new one fit right up. I used a forklift to do the lifting. it sure made the trip to DC more enjoyable. 292954

Really helped take away most of the jerky ride we used to get from our solid king pin. The air bag helps to smooths out rough roads. As per the advice of Lippert customer service I made 5 pound adjustments until I found the best ride. I keep a portable battery operated air pump along for adjustments. My airbag had a small air leak at the valve threads when new. After resealing the threads all is good. 513070

Gives better ride than my original pin box, but not worth the extra money. Also, due to the added length, I had to remove my fold up bed cover. Air bag needs inflation before each use. 324839

1st one had wrong bag(to small and would not lift trailer) they paid for all shipping etc for exchange. Hard to tell how well it works because I have bags also but overall I'm pleased. 312386

Comments
Mixed bag, it functions perfectly but I also have air bags on truck so it performance is improved by that. I had problems with not being able to fit air fill nozzle on filler, clearance issues. Rubber chucking damper pad got squished out backside of hitch requiring me to disassemble and install screws to hold rubber in place. And it just looks like a clap trap. Ive been looking at the Reese® Goose Box™ Gooseneck Coupler. But I also have the metal rollup tauno cover that causes clearance issue with both. So to sum it up, it works.

Installed flex air myself with 2 friends used a floor jack on the bed of the truck to raise the flex air ,went right in .the flex air works great you can see it flex going down the road .the ride is very smooth. Remember to air it up before you connect each time mine takes about 105psi but I have a heavy 5th wheel toyhauler .well worth the money a lot less than campingworld and other places. With the flex air your truck and 5th wheel each will ride so much smoother and less stress on both vehicles. 5 stars from me . 552548

4 stars as I have just recently installed this although I received it over a year ago. I just put 750 miles on it and experienced almost every PAVED road condition imaginable and it worked great. I can't imagine what that would have been like with the stock pin box. 4 stars because I still need to see how it performs off road and I am just a few days into using it on a trip covering OR, ID, MT and WY so I still have my personal evaluation to complete and need more drive time to see if anything fails on it. Installation was a breeze but it's a heavy hitch so caution is advised. 572537

First, about etrailer. As always, their service was outstanding. They honored their low price guarantee without question and shipping was fast. I upgraded from a Trailair Air Ride pin box with a fixed turret. That pin box helped with bouncing and jarring, but I still got a lot of "chucking". This FlexAir pin box solved that problem as well. Installation was a breeze, although you must make sure you have enough adjustment on your trailer to mount this pin box higher up than your existing pin box. I had to mount it at the very highest set of holes on my trailer. Lipperts web site has specs on this pin box and installation instructions, including measurements and torque specs. With the help of a friend and using the bed of my pickup truck, we unbolted the old one and bolted the new one in. Took about an hour and that was not hurrying. I took the trailer out this past weekend with the new pin box and hit some pretty bad roads. Wow! What a difference this pin box makes. I can only describe the ride one way. Smooooooth. I am very pleased with both etrailer and this product. It's pricey, but to me, pulling a large fifth wheel trailer, it's worth every penny. Highly recommended. 287066

Pin box was just as I ordered. It does improve the ride. Won't make your truck ride like a Cadillac but does help. I was also surprised that it was shipped in a card board box that was coming apart when it got to me. A wooden crate I think would be better. 725583

This 250 lb item was shipped in a cardboard box that was just sitting on a pallet. When I opened the box I found the Flex Air was sitting upside down with the foam pad on top. I have no idea how the air filling nozzle wasn't damaged. Luck I guess. There were no "UP" markings on the box. No instructions were included. Installation went smooth, it's just heavy so be careful. Instructions and videos can be found on-line. The Flex Air is at least 4" taller than the OEM box that came with our Grand Design Reflection. I mounted the Flex Air as high as I could and lowered the receiver on the truck. The trailer is still nose high but seems to tow fine. My test ride was noticeably smoother. You can see a lot of motion on the Flex Air that would have otherwise been transferred to the truck. 722359

Have not had a chance to take it for a road test yet. But it fit well, was easy to mount, the issue I ran into was getting the pin height. As my truck is 4x4, and the B&W hitch is as low as it can go, I still needed another 2 inches to get the pin box high enough, could not raise pin box any higher, and with the 5th wheel already at 13'4" did not want to lift the trailer, so ended up lowering the truck 2 inches to get everything back level again. But will find out next week how it works as we start out on a close to 12,000 mile trip to the west coast and back across through canada and back to florida. 694438

I wasn’t expecting a big difference in the ride of my F350 and my 5er and boy was I surprised! The chucking was reduced significantly and the RV was floating on air. Figuratively and literally. It could not compensate for crappy roads and pot holes but it sure made a difference in the ride overall. 668004

  • Recommendations to Reduce Chucking with a 2006 GMC 2500 Towing a 2015 Flagstaff 27 ft 5th Wheel
A 5th Airborne Pin Box with Sidewinder would help quite a bit with the vertical chucking, but for fore and aft your best solution would be to upgrade your fifth wheel trailer hitch to one that has a jaw that makes better contact with the king pin as that is where most of that type of chucking comes from. 5th Airbornes are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have know in order to pick out the correct one. There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM...

We have Trailair Flex Air fifth wheel pin box replacements for Lippert 1621 and Lippert 0719 pin boxes. You will need to know what model pin box you have on your trailer to find the correct replacement. You can typically find that information on a sticker or a tag on the side of the pin box. If not and if it is the original pin box you can contact the dealership and give them the VIN and they should be able to tell you what pin box number was installed on your trailer. If you find...

  • How to Pick Out a Lippert Flexair Pin Box for a Fifth Wheel Trailer
The Lippert Flex Air pin boxes like the part # LC328484 are great pin boxes to use to cushion the ride quality of towing a fifth wheel trailer. In order to know which Flex Air you would need you would need to know either the part number of your current Trailair or the original pin box that was on your trailer. With that info check out the link I attached to see all of the Lippert pin boxes we carry that would fit your trailer.

  • What is Air Pressure Range for Trail Air Flexair Pin Box
Air pressure for the TrailAir pin boxes such as # LC328484 can range from 20 to 120 psi. There isn't a specific amount of pressure you have to use. Instead it is recommended to inflate the air bag to maintain a level ride height but do not inflate the bag over 120 psi. Step 11 of the installation details (which are linked) Inflate the air bag with only enough air to raise the pin box to the ride height mark on the front of the shock absorber with the truck and trailer at rest. Overinflating...

  • When to Set Air Pressure in Trailair Flex Air Cushioned Pin Box
To get the best ride quality you want to inflate the air bag of your Trailair Flex Air part # LC328484 when the trailer is fully loaded as that will ensure that the shock and air bag will be as effective as possible. If you'd have to exceed the 120 psi limit of the bag you most likely are exceeding the weight capacity of the pin box. Inflate the air bag with only enough air to raise the pin box to the ride height mark on the front of the shock absorber with the truck and trailer at rest.

  • Cushioned Pin Box Recommendation for a Trailer to Reduce Chucking and Noise
The Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Boxes like the # LC328484 that you referenced would do an excellent job reducing the chucking you are experiencing. The internal air bag and built-in strut work with the rubberized pivoting head to achieve a dramatically smoother ride. This specific part number would work if you have a Lippert 0719. Otherwise you will need to first determine what pin box you have so that you can find the correct one to replace what you have. To determine what pin...

  • Recommended Trailair Pin Box Replacement for 1621 Pin Box on Heartland Oakmont 345RS 5th Wheel
The Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box - Lippert 1621 - 18,000 lbs # LC328492 or the Trailair Air Ride 5th Wheel Pin Box - 21,000 lbs # LC158778 will work as a replacement for your Heartland Oakmont 345RS which looks to have a GVWR of 15,500 lbs. The difference in these pin boxes is more than capacity and price. They are different in that the 18K is a Flex Air which means it has a pivoting head along with a rubber compound built into the head to absorb road shock and limit chucking....

  • Cushioned Pin Box Replacement Recommendation for 2018 Keystone Montana 3811MS
I gave all of your info to Lippert (who made your trailer frame) and they told me that you have the 1116 pin box currently so for a cushioned pin box that will be an upgrade from your Rota-Flex you'd want the Trailair part # LC155943 which will bolt right up easily and will give you vertical cushioning that will be much smoother than the cushioning of your Rota-Flex. This is the best cushioned pin box option for your trailer available.

  • Solution to Allow Ford F-350 More Tailgate Clearance when Connecting to Fifth Wheel Trailer
The Lippert 1621 pin box is already considered to be an extended pin box so that wouldn't be the route to help your situation. Instead I would recommend a fifth wheel tailgate that has a cutout in the top of it to allow a pin box to pass through without having to drop the tailgate. You didn't mention what year your truck is but we have the Stromberg Carlson 4000 Series 5th Wheel Louvered Tailgate # VG-15-4000 which fits newer Ford trucks like a 2018 model.

  • Availability of Longer Pin Box to Gain Tailgate Clearance with 5th Wheel Trailer Hooked Up
There may be some compatible replacement pin boxes for your trailer that are slightly longer than your current model but none would provide enough clearance to allow room for your tailgate to open. Any replacement model will be relatively similar in terms of overall size to the factory unit. If you are needing to lower the tailgate in order to hook up the trailer you might be interested in a 5th wheel tailgate like # VGD-10-100, which is designed for certain model Ram trucks. If you...

  • Tailgate Solution that Allows 2018 Ford F-350 to Connect to Trailer without Tailgate Interference
I believe I have a better solution than what you are hinting at which solves your problem, costs less, and is much more possible since longer pin boxes aren't available. What I'd recommend is a fifth wheel tailgate part like the Stromberg part # VG-15-4000 as this allows you to connect to your trailer without having to drop the tailgate which alleviates all of the concerns you have about clearance. I attached a review video for this tailgate for more info for you to check out as well.

The Trailair Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box # LC328484 that fits a Lippert 0719 pin box is the best upgrade you can make, and far better than MORryde's rubber pin box.
