Video Transcript for Reese Quick-Install 5th Wheel Base Rails Kit Installation - 2016 GMC Sierra 3500

Speaker 1: Today on this 2016 GMC Sierra 3500, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Reese Quick-Install Customer Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th wheel trailer hitches, part number RP50066-58. This is what our rails look like installed. And as you can see it even works great with 5th wheels. Your 5th wheel or gooseneck attachment head will attach to your rail in the appropriate spot using pin and 00:00:30 clips. We have six spots going across each of our rails where we can install our 5th wheel or our gooseneck adapter plate or any other accessory that mounts to your industry standard 5th wheel rails. Now, what sets this kit apart from other 5th wheel kits on the market is that this is a vehicle-specific kit. It's not a universal install where you have to drill holes in the frame of your truck or do welding.

This'll go into existing holes already in the frame and requires minimal drilling in the bed of your truck for your carriage bolts to go through that secure the rails to the mounting brackets on your frame. This will give you a nice factory look and will help speed up your install a little bit. Now, even though these are above the bed rails, they don't stick up above your bed very much at all. So you'll still have ample room to lay any sheets of plywood down, or take use of your bed in a normal pickup truck manner. We have a nice powder coat finish across our rails and our frame brackets. This will help prevent rust and corrosion over the course of time.

Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get them installed. To begin our install, we'll need to take a couple of measurements to find the position of our rear rail. Where we'll get this measurement from the end of our bed and not the end of our tailgate. We'll fine these numbers for our bed length in the instructions. Now we'll measure and find the center of our bed and just make a small reference mark. So we'll measure side-to-side, both directions, and make a mark.

Now, we'll slide the back edge of our rail against the marks that we made. With our rail now in position, we've ensured that it's centered, based upon a reference mark that we made and we'll drill small pilot holes through both ends of our rail at the square hole that's next to the one closest to the edge. And we'll repeat the same process on the other side. Now on our center hole on the side of the rail that's closest to the cab of the truck, we'll also drill a pilot hole. Now we'll take our frame bracket, these oblong holes here and here, we'll line up with these holes in the frame. We'll slide it over the frame and make sure that these holes here and here on the back line up with the pilot holes that we made. As you can see, our pilot holes in the bed line up with the frame bracket so we're safe to enlarge these holes now.

Now we'll slide our rail out of the way and we'll enlarge our pilot holes to the size indicated in the instructions using a step bit to do this. We'll repeat this same process for our other holes. Now to help prevent rust from occurring, we're going to take some spray paint and go around the edge where we drilled out. Since we have a spray in bed liner we're just using black spray paint. If you don't have that you can just use clear coat, that way you don't have to worry about buying matching paint for your truck bed. Now we'll drop our carriage bolts through our rail and the hole that we drilled. Now we can take our frame rail, we'll make sure that our carriage bolts on the side go through the back hole and a forward hole on the rear section of the rail. And to help hold the rail in position, we'll just temporarily push our carriage bolts, the big ones, through the frame rail and in the frame. This'll support it as we install our hardware underneath. Here we are underneath the truck bed. You can see where our carriage bolt goes through our bracket. We'll take one of our U-shaped spacer blocks and place that between the frame bracket and the bed. This'll prevent the bed from getting crushed as the hardware is tightened. We'll place on a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing the frame bracket, followed by a lock washer and we'll thread on a nut. We're just going to have this finger tight for the time being. We'll do the same process for both locations. For our center bolt, we'll just have one of our blocks, our conical tooth washer, a lock washer, and a nut and just finger tight for right now. Now that we have our frame rail loosely bolted t our back rail, we can remove our carriage bolts that we used to help hold it in place. We'll take one of our pull wires and we'll go through the frame bracket and the frame and we'll work it towards the front of the vehicle.Inside the frame right above our bump stop mount the pull wire will come out. You can see that on the other side. We'll now take one of our square blocks, place it on the wire, stick it inside the frame and we will thread our carriage bolt onto the wire. We'll push that inside the hole. We will now pull the bolt through the hole. You may need to use a screwdriver to help line it up properly. With the bolt through the hole we'll now remove the pull wire, place on our conical tooth washer. The teeth will face towards the frame bracket. Now we'll thread on our nut. Now we'll do the same procedure for the other mounting location for our frame bracket. Now we'll repeat the same process for the other side of the truck. In order to get the proper placement for our front rail, we went ahead and laid our front rail in the general position and used our 5th wheel head that we're going to be using to hold it in place. This gives us the proper spacing from the rear rail and the cab of the truck. Now we'll drive our pilot holes for our rail. On the front rail we'll be using the two outermost locations on each side. We'll also use the center one that's closest to the cab of the truck. With our holes marked, we remove the front rail and now we'll enlarge the holes. We'll use our spray paint again so we don't have to deal with any rust later down the road. With our paint done, we'll now slide our rail back into position underneath our 5th wheel head. Now since our holes here don't sit flush with the bed and there's a gap underneath the rail, we'll slide one of our spacer blocks underneath the rail and then insert our bolt. We'll do the same for the other side. Now, since our middle one is flush with the bed we don't need the block, we'll just draw the bolt through. It's the same process to install the hardware for the front rail into our frame bracket, minus the fact we do not need the U-shaped spacer underneath the bed of the truck since that went on top of the bed.Now we'll install the hardware for the center bolt on the front rail the same way as we did the back. Now we'll tighten down all of our hardware. When we tighten our rails to our frame brackets you will need a ratcheting wrench because it is difficult to get in there with a socket. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. That completes our look at and installation of the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches, Part number RP50066-58 on this 2016 GMC Sierra 3500.

Frame brackets were a perfect fit and easy to install. Installing nuts on the rail's proved a little difficult on my vehicle 2018 GMC due to limited clearance over fuel tank and truck frame and exhaust shield (definitely a 2 person job). Otherwise I am perfectly satisfied with the quality of the kit and easy to follow instructions. I would recommend this kit.

Installed on 2017 chevy 2500. Square washers for the 5/8 bolts were to big to fit through the acess holes in pickup frame. I had to fish them through a bigger hole further up the frame rail. Other than that, excellent products. Once I found etrailer, its the only place I shop for trailer products

Received the product the very next day shipping was excellent. Boxes were well taped and secured and complete. This was installed on a 2011 Silverado 2500 HD with a 8 foot bed . My installation was straightforward ,followed the included directions , and it installed very easy. I only have two suggestions , Get the spare tire down and out-of-the-way and do whatever is necessary to get around the heat shield. I just cut a small section of mine away . I have done business with etrailer for about five years now. I use to price check and order everywhere off the Internet. I don't do that anymore because I always ended up back doing business with etrailer.com. For four reasons ... Best price around, quality products, great customer service from a live person, well packaged products with the fast shipping

Fast shipping!! Installed on a new 2016 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali. Only issue was the exhaust heat shield.. It must be removed for easier access to install hardware. It takes about 3 hours to install with one person. Otherwise no issues. E Trailer is great to do business with!! Thank you

I purchased fifth wheel hitch rails. They were worked great. We certainly put them through a strong test. Unfortunately we got stuck on a very muddy, greasy road on a hunt. The fifth wheel was leaning at an angle but the rails held! I was extremely relieved and happy that they did. Thank you etrailer.

The rail kit installation went smoothly. I did the complete installation alone just to see if I could complete it without any assistance from anyone. (The installation honestly took me about eight hours which included quite a few breaks!) The only difficult task for me was installing the two nuts and washers on the front two bolts on the LH Frame Bracket due to the tight clearance around the large diesel fuel tank on my truck. As some of other folks mentioned, removing the spare tire and exhaust system heat shield are a must for installing the rail kit this model truck. The quality of the components is excellent. My wife and I will be pulling our 5th Wheel to the Georgia Mountains with this hitch this weekend!

I purchased the Reese dual jaw slider and install bracket kit. Everything arrived in three days in perfect condition. After watching the install video and reviewing the enclosed instructions I installed the assembly myself. It took approximately 4 hours . As you can see I also did additional steps, cutting the rubber bed mat to fit around the rails. Also undercoating the brackets to blend in the wheel wells. Etrailer is definitely the place to go for all your RV needs.

Hi Carol. I got the package. I hope to install next week. I’m also looking to put a 5th wheel electrical plug in the bed. 2019 Chevy 3500 with the factory prep for the wiring harness. Do you have a correct fit kit to do this?

Comments
We do offer a 5th wheel wiring harness for your 2019 Silverado 3500. Id recommend the Hopkins # 41157
Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness with 7-Pole Plug
$58.96
, which you can see by using the link provided below. The harness plugs inline right behind the 7-way installed on your trucks rear bumper, between the trucks factory harness and the existing 7-way.

2016 GMC Yukon

Installed a Reese custom rail kit (RP50066-58) on my 2016 GMC Denali 4WD DRW. It took approximately 3 1/2 hours to get it completely installed. I had to remove the exhaust heat shield and drop the spare tire but once I did it gave me easy access to the hitch frame brackets. I found it very informative to watch the online video first and took the advise of another persons suggestion to tape over the holes in the top of the frame (it kept me from losing the nuts & washers down into the frame). I simply followed the written instructions that came with the kit and the hitch was installed with out any real issues. I will say it did come in handy to have someone to assist me with some parts of the installation (just to keep me from having to crawl in/out from under the truck to get tools etc). As a side note, if you had access to car lift it would make the installation much faster and easier. I didn't have access to one and it was a little tight but as I said it wasn't all that bad. I would definitely recommend this product.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

The included instructions are good, however there is a YouTube video that is super easy to follow. Also the torque recommendations are impossible to achieve unless you have a flat (non socket) torque wrench. Most home torque wrenches only go to 150lbs and the settings for the frame is 210lbs. The bolts on the rear drivers side rail were located behind the gas tank. You have to achieve a form of contortion that would impress any circus performer. Overall great product well laid out instructions and installable by the average guy.

- RP50066-58
by:

Hitch works great. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. However, removal of the wheel well liners would make installation of the custom rail kit even easier.

Although the Rails won't be installed until my new truck comes in mid April, I fully expect the product to be as advertised. I was recommended to your site and product by salesman from major manufacturer of the 5th Wheel Hitch currently used.

This was a nice product easy to install. The hitch works good the only thing is it is hard to unlock because the jaws are tight. Other than that had no problems.

Comments
If the jaws are difficult to unlock, youll want to make sure the hitch has been lubricated according to the operating instructions. Also, if the fifth wheel and the hitch arent both level, the pin box may be applying some force to the jaws, causing them to bind. Moving the vehicle a bit will usually allow the hitch to unbind.

Rail kit was great and etrailer was great with fast and free shipping. Only advice: I installed this kit on my 2014 Chevrolet 3500 and I would not do it again. I'd spend the extra money and get the RP56001-53 kit...much much easier to install If you have time and patience, it's worth the savings. Otherwise save yourself the tight quarters of trying to get to those bolts above the frame rails. I suspect this kit was an earlier design that was or should have been superseded by the later one.

Wow, I received the order in 2 days. The previous owner of my truck had a "universal kit " installed. Single bolts on the ends of the rails bolted into angle irons. I removed all the "old brackets" and installed the custom brackets. Fits perfectly. the nuts on the front rail are a little difficult to put on, but not impossible. Looks great..

Kit was delivered quickly. Installation papers were very easy to follow. It was pretty easy to install with another set on hands. There were two areas on my 2018 Chevy 2500HD with the 6’-6” bed that are tough too get to(that’s when the extra hands come in great). I’m very please the product as well as the support from George J. Recommend fully!!!

This is a custom fit rail kit that will install in much less time than a universal kit and will minimize drilling. Most likely you do not have the factory rail kit as you'd probably know if you did. If you did have the factory rail kit it would look like 4 pucks in the bed of your truck and the adapter you'd need is the part # RP30156...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 and 17,000 Pound Trailer
Since the 5th wheel trailer has a potential gross weight of over 16,000 pounds I recommend going up to a higher capacity hitch. For an economical 20K hitch you can use # PS30119 for a long bed or # PS30121 slider for a short bed truck. For the tires you should use what is recommended by the trailer manufacturer. Trailer tires, (ST in front of the size) should be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. This is because trailer tires have a thicker sidewall compared to passenger...

  • Base Rails and Install Kit for 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
The base rails and installation kit I highly recommend for your 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails # RP50066-58 because this kit will not require any type of drilling in your Silverado's frame to install. Not only is that a great thing for your truck, but it cuts the installation time down significantly. I do want to note that these base rails will give your Silverado industry-standard base rails and will only work if your Mor/Ryde...

  • Recommended No-Drill Fifth Wheel Frame Bracket/Bed Rail Install Kit for 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500
Reese offers two different no-drill frame bracket/bed rail options for your 2015 Silverado 2500, neither of which would require drilling into the truck frame. The inboard bracket kit, part # RP50066-58 is a bit less expensive, but is a bit more difficult to use, as the attachments between the bracket and the bed rail are made on top of the frame members, making them a bit more difficult to get to. Another option would be the Reese outboard rail kit, part # RP56001-53 that used bed rails...

The Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches part # RP50066-58 are designed for GM vehicle and will not fit your 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty.
