Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2017 Nissan Titan

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Nissan Titan, we're going to be taking a look at and show you how to install the replacement and custom multi-tow seven weight and four-way trailer connector. Part number 30955.This is what our seven and four pole looks like when it's installed. Our seven pole side is going to give us all the functions for your running lights, brake lights, turn signals, your ground, your reverse lights, and also it's going to allow you to hook up a brake controller for electric brakes on a trailer. You're also going to have a four-pole connection, which is going to give your normal running lights, brake lights, inaudible 00:00:37 turn signals, and also your ground. Our seven pole plug here is going to have a spring loaded lid so we don't have to worry about making sure it's closed, it'll stay closed by itself. On the inside here, it's going to have a rubber ring, that's going to seal around this edge to keep any dirt and debris, moisture from getting on your connections.Four pole side here, is going to have an attached cover, it's also going to help keep any dirt and debris from getting on your connection points. Now that we've gone over some of the features of our seven and four pole plug, let me show you how to get it installed. Our seven pole and four pole plug is going to come with a bracket. This bracket we're going to mount on our pre-welded bracket on our hitch. Your hardware, you're going to have a Phillips head screw, a flat washer, on the bottom, you'll have a nut and a lock washer. Now our hardware to mount our seven and four pole onto the bracket, you're going to have Phillips head screws like this, four of them.

And you're going to have a nut with a star washer attached. To help us get our factory seven pole plug over to the back of our new plug, we're going to be using part number HM40985. It's basically an extension. What we're going to have to do is we're going to cut this plug off. We're going to splice our wires together to the factory wiring, and that'll give us enough to get to our new plug. Now your adaptor is going to come with some dielectric grease, I suggest putting it on before you put your plugs together. What this is going to do, it's going to protect your connection points from corroding, if any moisture or anything gets in there.Push them together, make sure you can't pull them apart.I'm going to take my wiring and extension, there's actually factory wiring that runs right across the back of the vehicle, up above the spare tire.

What I'm going to do, is I'm going to take this feed it up like that, it's going to help keep it away, and I'm going to start zip tying it across over to my factory plug. Now because our factory seven pole, the wiring is just a little bit different than our wiring on our plug. We need to test all of our wiring on our factory plug to determine what the functions are for each one. On our new adaptor plug, or our new extension, our green wire and this is going to tell you in the instructions, our green wire is going to be right turn, white's going to be ground, red is power, yellow left turn, running lights is your brown, this is going to be your reverse light, and this is going to be for a brake controller. Now we're going to go ahead and remove our factory plug. Just going to cut the wires off here. I will go ahead and cut off our ring terminal on our ground wire from our extension, or our plug that we just attached.

Go ahead and strip back all those. We determined that our green wire is going to be our left turn signal and brake light. Our red wire is going to be our running light signal. Our yellow wire with the black is going to be our brake and right turn. Our yellow with the red is going to be our reverse.

White and blue is going to be our power wire. Black is going to be our ground. Brown is going to be for our electric brakes. Now we'll just match our color wires from our extension to the corresponding wires or correct functions on our factory lights, our factory wiring. Now, your kits going to come with butt connectors, I recommend using heat shrink butt connectors, because this is going to be outside of the vehicle. The heat shrink is going to protect your connections from corroding. You can pick those up on our website, using part number DW05744. Now before I heat shrink anything up, I'm going to go ahead and test my plugs and make sure everything is working correctly. Now I'll test out our wiring using an alternate power source. Brake lights, left turn, right turn, running lights, reverse. Now that we've determined everything's working correctly, we'll take our heat source and shrink our butt connectors. Now that we've got all of our butt connectors, heat shrinked up, we can go ahead and clean up our install. I'm going to through a little bit of wire loom on just to match what they have here, you can wrap it in, electrical tape. That'll do it for a look at and installation of a replacement custom multi-tow seven light and four way trailer connector on our 2017 Nissan Titan.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Product was exactly what I was looking for and thanks to the hitch system previously purchased, it was fabricated for a perfect fit. Also, the first one that came in was busted up a little, etrailer immediately sent a new one out with no hassle. Great company.

by:

Great fit works good has 7way rv plug and the regular flat 4 plug no need for adapters to lose or have stolen.

Been using this plug for a year now still working great

by:

Perfect fit just plug and play good quality hitch.

by:

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver was easy to install and has worked just fine in pulling my several trailers. For the price, an excellent deal. The 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness Connector by Hopkins was a disappointment because the cap that doubles as a dust cover and latch to the adapter has come off and missing after a few months. This cap is not replaceable, the whole connector would have to be replaced.

by:
2006 GMC Sierra

Exact fit for my 06 GMC Sierra it took longer to get my spare tire down than to install the tow package. My spare was stuck.

by:

Perfect fit and function as usual from etrailer.

by:
2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Perfect! I used this on a single cab Chevy Silverado 1500. Plugged into factory trailer lights near spare tire, mounted it up, plugged in trailer and everything worked just like it should. My truck does not have a spare tire so I removed the spare tire keyhole mount and cut some of the bumper to fit the adapter. My truck did not require a ECM/PCM flash of any kind, although I hear some vehicles may have to.

by:

I installed this today. Took around 90 minutes but part of that was learning how to get the spare out of the way. I drilled two holes in the bottom of the bumper because of where I wanted the connector to be placed. All necessary hardware came with the unit. This was very easy to do after watching etrailer's How To video. Good job guys, great product.

by:
2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Product exactly what I was looking for. Fit factory harness perfectly. Strong and rigid, appropriate mounting hardware. Perfect

by:
2006 Chevrolet Silverado

in my case I have to say that first look at YouTube from there I got the video with the description of the process and the number of the part of there just went to etrailer.com I put the # alone went out it was really easy to send fantastic just wait 4 days in regular shipment for the installed only you see that plug it in thank you I hope that some more will serve..

by:

Nice product ,Easy to install and then worked as supposed to . I installed in bumper as opposed to the add on bracket that came with it ,made for a easier way to plug in trailer cord.

by:
2006 Chevrolet Silverado

I bought this 7 way trailer connector to replace a broken one on my 2006 Chevy 2500HD. It was an easy install and only took a few minutes to complete. I tested it with my trailer connected and all works fine.
The shipping was super fast.
Thanks , etrailer.

by:

Works great!!! Thanks....

by:

Cathy T. was very good help. She set me up with the correct parts for our 2001 Chevy so we can have a 7 prong plug in at the bumper and in the box.
We got rid of the cobbled up mess that started giving us trouble and now everything works great. The plug and play took me about 1 1/2 hours to complete. We will do business again if needed. Thanks again Cathy T. and etrailer!

Perfect fit. Could not ask for anything else.

by:

worked great thanks

by:

Easy install. Black plastic cover broke of very quickly.

by:

The product was an exact one-for-one replacement. However, I ended up having to replace the female connector due to corrosion. This took a bit of time. The result was all new connections that work fine. Thanks for all your assistance.

Bought this 7 way connector to replace my current 5 pin. It fit into the factory wiring and came with a bracket and screws. Fast shipping and 10 minutes to install. Thanks Etrailer

2007 Chevrolet Silverado

My 2007 Classic Silverado Crew Cab 4x4 did not have a factory hitch receiver, so I selected the 13322 Curt Hitch Receiver because it closely resembles the OEM hitch receiver and attaches to the bottom of the bumper. Installation was easy, as shown in the videos and described by other reviewers. All holes aligned perfectly. I did not remove the spare tire as it is not necessary. I used two jack stands to raise/support the receiver frame in place while I started the first bolts. I had the 22mm and 19mm sockets needed to tighten and torque the bolts/nuts. It looks great and I now am able to tow.

For the wiring I installed the 30955 Hopkins 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors to the bumper adjacent to the license plate. This required drilling a 2-1/8" hole in the bumper, which was time consuming, but it now resembles a factory installation. I was able to remove the license plate and connect to the factory plug.

I ordered these parts from etrailer for a number of reasons: 1) The website is intuitive and contains a tremendous amount of information for the person who is trying to research product information; 2) the selection and inventory is amazing; 3) the prices are very competitive – free shipping for orders over $99; and 4) the dedicated customer service is outstanding – the email communication is prompt. I ordered on a weekend and it was delivered by the following Friday.
A very positive first experience.

by:

Quick shipping. And best part they sent me the correct hitch and plug in. No complaints here!

by:

The male prongs on the plug on the wire end were too short and did not engage.
The lights would not work. I bought another brand plug that the prongs were longer on and it worked fine.

2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Spent a little time on phone with Preston discussing a wiring solution to accompany the trailer hitch desired. He recommended a product and confirmed that it should be a plug and play situation. Long story short, the hitch was bolted up and the wiring functional in 1 hr's time. I had to drill (2) holes to mount the wiring receptacle, but that was expected. Great service, fast delivery, and excellent prices. I'm very happy. Vehicle: 2005 Chev 1500, 4-dr, 6-1/2 ft bed. Note: Factory wiring harness trailer plug-in was located above the spare tire, towards the rear of the vehicle.

  • What Circuit of 2015 Chevy Silverado Connects to Trailer Battery
The 1:00 pin of the 7-way at the rear of your 2015 Chevy Silverado is the circuit that would connect to and charge the trailer battery. On a Silverado like yours this circuit can sometimes not be active but with a few connections under the hood the circuit will be active. If you check out the attached help article you can see how this connection would get made on a truck like yours.

When manufacturer's make the 7-Way plugs on the back of vehicles like your 2005 Chevrolet Sliverado they combine the tail light and turn signals before the plug on the rear. What I recommend is to add the Replacement Custom Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors part # 30955. This will give you a 4-way and 7-way to use any time you'd like. This will plug into the already existing 7-way plug on the rear of the truck and can be permanently attached eliminating the need for an adapter....

  • Location for Installing Hopkins # 30955 Replacement Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector
You are entirely free to choose an alternate mounting location for your new 7-way as long as your factory wiring harness can still reach its location. Your vehicle and trailer will not care on which side of the hitch their electrical connection is made. I do suggest you first make certain that your trailer connector can reach your new preferred location on the vehicle when the trailer and vehicle are hitched. You also need to be sure the OEM harness on the vehicle (with the round U.S. Car...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer that Illuminates Trailer and Vehicle Running Lights When Connected
There must be a short on the wiring of the trailer you are towing or on the tow vehicle. Sounds like it has to do with the running lights and the 12 volt power circuit. Since it only happens when the trailer is connected I would expect it to be on the trailer side of the situation. Check out the 7-way wiring diagram I attached and compare that to how the 7-way of the trailer is wired. You would also need to look for obvious signs of a short like cut or exposed wiring or corrosion. If...
