Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11141310 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins plug-in simple wiring harness with the 4-way flat trailer connector. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2013 and newer Buick Enclave and GMC Acadias without the tow package. On any custom fit part, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it will show if this will work for your application. This harness will provide this 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole, and 7-pole adapters that we do sell separately. This does connect very quickly and easily.

There's no cutting or splicing of the wires. Basically, your location points, which will be behind the tail lights on your vehicle, you just go to each side of the vehicle, plug in your T-connectors, right here, right behind the tail lights. Ground your white wire. You have a white wire with an eyelet on it. Ground that.

And then you have your red power wire. That will need to run to the vehicle's battery. This does include this tail light converter right here. This is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. It is a powered module. That's why we connect it directly to the battery and that's to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system.

The terminals on this are protective connection terminals to help resist corrosion. If you notice, it does come with this dust cap for the 4-way. Basically, what you can do with that is attach it to your 4-way plug and then when you're not plugged into your trailer, just go ahead and put the dust cap over the 4-way and it will protect those terminals from any damage or from the elements. Also, comes with some cable ties if you need to take up any slack in the wiring and it comes with terminal grease packet for the electrical connections. When you go to install this, a few specs on this first. The maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights circuits is 3 amps per circuit.

For the tail light circuit it's 6 amps. Now, it comes with all these pieces here and just to go through your installation real quick. What you do is you go to the rear of the car, again access behind your tail lights, and then you'll want to start on the driver's side. You'll take the connector here that has the yellow wire in it and you'll unplug the harness behind your tail lights and plug this into there. Then you'll take the other connector, right here, that has the length of green wire, and the green wire's for the passenger's side. So, you'll run this length of wire all the way over to your passenger side. Go ahead and plug that in behind the tail light. And then again, you're left with the white wire. The white wire, again, you just have the eyelet on, you want to connect that to a good clean ground. So, you take your grounding screw that they include, if there's one nearby you can use that, but if not, if you need to make one, just take the grounding screw, drill a hole, connect your ground. Then you have your power wire. The power wire you'll run to your vehicle's battery. To do that, they do give you a length of wire to run that to the battery. What you want to do is take the power wire with the butt connector on it, attach it to one end of this length of wire, run the whole length all the way up to the front of the vehicle to the battery, and then you don't want to connect this directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse holder. So, what you'll do is take the one side with the butt connector and make that connection. Your other end will have an eyelet on it. That is what you connect to the battery. And then just pop open your fuse holder. They give you an included 15 amp fuse. Just install that and then put your cover back over there. Then your system will be all ready to go. Like I mentioned, the terminal grease, any of these connections when you make them, you do want to put some terminal grease on all the connections, even on the 4-way when you connect to your trailer. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins plug-in simple wiring harness with the 4-way flat trailer connector.
