Time-Delayed Braking

The Venturer applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Venturer. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (sync) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Venturer sends power out in the same way, with the same gradual delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the sync setting.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Curt Venturer Controls and Components

The above diagram shows the controls and components of the Curt Venturer trailer brake controller.

  1. LED display
  2. Power output control
  3. Sync control
  4. Slide-bar manual override

Output Control

During the initial setup process, use the slide-bar control on top of the Venturer to adjust the output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, slide the switch to the right. To decrease the power output, slide it to the left. The bars on the LED display indicate the output setting from 1 to 8.

Sync Setting

To adjust the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking action, use the slide-bar control on the side of the Venturer to change the sync setting. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the switch forward. To get smoother braking action, slide the switch backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter the sync setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller.

Installation of the Venturer requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your vehicle. To hardwire the Venturer, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6-brake applications

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

I installed the Curt C51110 along with Plug & Play C51382 into my 2016 Frontier. The installation took me about 2 minutes. I did not drill holes or use the supplied mounting bracket, just Velcro. Works perfectly! 291590

Received product very fast. Everything I ordered was exactly what I got. Plug and play with what i ordered. It was hooked up with in less than 2 minutes then a couple minutes to screw in the bracket screws. Very pleased . I needed trailer brakes because I bought a camper and I did not want to wear out my truck brakes faster than normal. I looked around locally and on internet Etrailer had the best deal . 552650

seems to work great, just right for my small single axle trailer. 122699

after 8k miles of towing with this controller, I wish I had bought a better one. the controller works fine, but is hard to keep in adjustment. one day it works fine, and the next its applying too much, or too little braking. If you plan on doing a lot of towing, buy a proportional controller.

Thanks for your follow up and reply. I agree with you the proportional brake controllers are much better, especially for frequent towing. Our best selling ones are the Tekonsha P2 # 90885
Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional
$114.95
and the P3 # 90195
Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional
$116.86

Didn’t use do to lack of wiring that it doesn’t come with. Was looking for more of a plug in and go. Used a different product will try to use this on a different vehicle. 545769

Comments

This brake controller isnt a vehicle specific item. The wiring pigtail is the vehicle specific portion, and because the actual plug varies from vehicle to vehicle, the vehicle specific plug is sold separately. Most full and mid-sized pickups and SUVs manufactured since around 2000 will have the factory supplied connector for installing a brake controller.

This is my first experience with installing and/or using an electric brake controller so I'm by no means an expert. However, the Curt Venturer was easy to order and etrailer.com noted other parts I would need to complete the installation and use the product. It was delivered in a timely manner and was exactly as specified. I had my mechanic do the installation on my 1998 Nissan Pathfinder and it took him a couple of hours because of the age of the vehicle. The controller is easy and intuitive to set up and use and it works well. I will keep etrailer.com on my list of go-to places for my towing needs. 143219

easy install, but extremely hard to adjust trailer load setting cannot stop trailer from over braking, very hard to drive in traffic. if this is not a defective I would not recommend it 574025

Comments

The brake controller has two adjustments. You can adjust both the amount of power delivered to the brakes, and the speed at which that power is delivered. The synch control is located on the side of the controller, try decreasing the aggressiveness of the brakes a bit and see if that helps. Finding the perfect setting for the smoothest possible braking action could take some fiddling around with both the power and the speed adjustment.

got the package in the mail open product quick and easy install plug and play per say the product works grate noticeable difference with it. the only thing on this product is adjustment knobs has 2 to adjust not too difficult to adjust but once you get the hang of it its easy to work with it.. love the unit i don't pull a trailer everyday but im glad i have the controller on my truck. better to have one and not need one then need on and not have one. 561304

Great brake controller, very small in size but works great. Ordered with the plug and play wire, hooked up in minutes. Was ordered for a brand new vehicle and didn't want to drill any holes in dash. Wire was long enough to just let the controller lay on the center console since it's a time delay controller and doesn't need to be facing any certain way. When not towing, the controller gets unplugged and stored in the glove compartment while the wire is stored under the dash out of the way ready for the next adventure. 653444

The CURT Venturer brake controller works as described in the user guide. It would be better if the display LED segments were bright enough to see in bright light. My installation is different from most. I mounted the brake controller and a trailer 7-pole socket to my Trailer Valet with a magnet and use the controller to operate the electric brakes on my trailer. This is far better than relying on the Trailer Valet brake alone, especially when moving the trailer on a grade. 557200

Sorry for the late follow-up. I just wanted to let you know that the brake controller and wiring harness I purchased through eTrailer worked very well with my 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins 6.7L diesel. Pictures are attached for your use, as required. The trailer was an 18-foot enclosed snow machine tailer with a steel chassis. I can't remember the empty weight, but it's substantial. We towed empty and full on dry and snow covered roads from Oklahoma to Colorado and back. Even with th exhaust brake on my truck, I can't imagine towing this load through the hills and mountains without a brake controller. It's been done before, but I would say it's an unnecessary risk given the more than reasonable prices at eTrailer...it was cheap insurance pulling such a heavy rig with my family on board. The controller was definitely not your top-of-the-line model, but the adjustability and controls were more than adequate for somebody who tows occasionally. A professional may desire more proportional controls and adjustability, but not much more. This unit peformed flawlessly. Thank you for your time. Please feel free to contct me if you would like any clarification on my statements or pictures. 121176

simplistic and it works for my purposes. Small form factor to fit to the left of the driver side dash. 167654

For a time based controller its good for my single axle trailer. Eventually I will upgrade to the intertia based controller. Time based cant seem to find a happy medium with the brake intensity at various loads.

Excellent controller for my needs...fast shipping and a great price too! I read up on Progressive vs. Time Delay controllers; and for my needs I felt this Curt controller would be just fine. I just finished installing and adjusting the controller this morning. We recently bought a '99 Coleman Westlake Pop-up that weighs about 2,400 lbs. dry (much less than my brake-less boat trailer) and wanted to take advantage of the brakes that came on the camper for when we travel in the SC & NC mountains camping. On level ground I have found the controller to be very responsive and easy to adjust. I am sure having working brakes in the mountains will be nice! As others have said, finding just the right place to mount the controller was the most difficult part. The "plug & play" adapter/harness was more than long enough to complete the installation. Oh, did I mention fast shipping too! I am another very satisfied etrailer.com Customer! 402072

When used with part number C51515, easy install, hardest part of install is deciding where to drill into your new vehicle's dash to mount controller, or just ask your wife :). The included test light makes finding the correct "cold" brake wire a breeze. 82283

The products worked great up until about a few weeks ago Thats when I sold the truck where the items were installed. lol. Really though, I very much liked how the products listed and purchased from etrailer.com were easy to find, fit exactly as described, and performed as needed. etrailer.com is always one of the first places I look when searching for items for my new truck.

The controller works as advertised although we've yet to get it perfectly adjusted and won't until we have the SUV and trailer loaded for camping. The video didn't make clear the difference between a time delay controller like this and one that adjusts braking force in response to the tow vehicle's braking force. So I wonder, now that I know, which would really have been better for my situation. This so far tends to lock up my trailer wheels near the end of the brake cycle while seeming too gentle in applying them early on. Better adjustments may help, of course; time will tell. I'd recommend you discuss your planned installation with eTrailer before purchase. 178249

Comments

I have used this for a full year and agree... They seem light at the start of brake cycle then lock-up at the end. I have found that as a result I have it set on the gentle side.

The adjustments are too sensitive. It does nothing or it locks up the brakes. The unit in my other truck had a digital readout. I will replace it with a better unit. I think Curt is a good product, I just should have bought a better unit. 558307

Comments

Have you tried adjusting the sync control on the side of the brake controller? Pushing the control toward the front of the vehicle makes the brakes more aggressive, pulling it towards you makes them less aggressive. Id recommend lowering the aggressiveness, which should provide the results youre looking for.

Trailer brake controller works great on my 2019 Honda Pilot. Took about 15 min to set up. Very easy. I had the factory tow packaged installed, all I had to do was plug wiring harness under dash then into the controller and done. Priority shipping made it to California in 2 days. etrailer made it easy. I just put in my vehicle info, and I did not have to second guess my purchase or worry about the part not being right. Way easier than amazon or somewhere else. Plus it was a little bit cheaper than amazon. 718942

Straight forward installation. Works flawless. Simple and effective. Nearly impossible to find more bang for the buck. I have no reason to get anything else. 716273

nice product for the price, but i will probably upgrade eventually. Don't usually haul very heavy things and would like to be able to turn controller off when brakes are not needed. 673744

Comments

Because its very easy to forget to turn them back on, youd be pretty hard pressed to find a brake controller that can be turned off. If it makes you feel better, the unit can be unplugged when not needed, but for safetys sake we recommend leaving the unit plugged in. Once the vehicle is shut off, the brake controller will go into a standby mode after several minutes at which point the current draw is minuscule. If the vehicle was left unattended for months on end, the current draw might be enough to draw down the battery, but thats what itd take.

  • The Curt Venturer part # C51110 would have plenty of braking power to activate the brakes on the tent trailer you are purchasing. This controller can activate up to 3 brake axles so it would be more than powerful enough. I do have a better option for you though. The controller you referenced is a time-delayed controller. Which means that it applies a preset amount of braking power at a preset speed every time you touch the brakes. That can work out decently, but in reality rarely do...

  • What is Needed to Install Curt Venturer Brake Controller in 2007 GMC Sierra New Body?
  • If you have the factory 7-way on your 2007 GMC Sierra New Body you can install the Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller # C51110 with just the Universal Wiring Adapter for Curt Trailer Brake Controllers # C51515. Should your truck not have a factory 7-way you will still need the adapter, but you will also need to add Connector # PK11898 or, if your Sierra has a round plug with a cap instead of a bundle of wires above the spare tire, use part # 30955 instead. There is going to be a...

  • Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 1997 Chevy K1500
  • You can add a 7-Way connector to your truck but it requires some hard wiring. If your 1997 Chevy K1500 does not already have any trailer connector you would start by installing a 4-Way, # 118315. Then you would need to install 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. If your truck already has a 4-Way then you will not need to install a different one. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation. The ETBC7 harness also includes the parts needed to wire up a brake...

  • In order to install the Curt Venturer brake controller # C51110 on your 2016 Ram 1500 you will need wiring harness # C51458. It plugs into the factory plug on the truck located under the dash, to the right of the steering column, taped to another harness. I included a picture showing the location. the picture is from the instructions for # C51458 which I have also linked for you.

  • Adapter for Curt Venture Brake Controller on VW Touareg
  • In order to use the Universal Wiring Adapter for Curt Trailer Brake Controllers # C51515 with your Curt Venturer # C51110 brake controller, you will need additional parts from your Volkswagen dealer. Please see the attached help article on installing a brake controller in 2005 and up Volkswagen Touareg's. It states in part: "To install a brake control on a 2005-current Volkswagen Touareg or Porsche Cayenne using the factory brake control connector, you will need to assemble a brake...

  • Brake Controller Compatibility with Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
  • The Pilot 2-6 Brake Electronic Brake Controller - Time Delayed # 80550 has not been tested by the manufacturer to work with Electric Over Hydraulic brakes. Most time delayed controllers are not a fit for the EOH systems. The Curt Venturer # C51110 and the Hayes Engage # HA81760 are the only two the manufacturer states will work with EOH, but I honestly wouldn't recommend either for that use. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 or P3 # 90195 for the best operation with an...

  • Brake Controller Installation on 2014 Ford E350 Van
  • The vehicle is unlikely to have the connector behind the dash unless it has the factory equipped 7-way on the rear bumper. If it does, the connector that the controller would plug into is clipped to the rear of the small cubbyhole or coin tray in the dash. You'll access the connector by removing the coin tray. If the van doesn't have the factory 7-way, you'll need to hardwire the brake controller using our Install Kit, part # ETBC7. If your vehicle is a motorhome on a van cutaway chassis,...

  • Which Curt Brake Controller Adapter Fits a 2015 Ford F-150
  • The Curt adapter, part # C51436, fits your 2015 Ford F-150. It plugs into the factory connector under your truck's dash and fits most Curt brake controllers, like the Venturer part # C51110. I've linked a video of a controller being installed into a 2013 F-150 using the # C51436 adapter.

  • The Curt Venturer Brake Controller, # C51110, and Brake Controller Wiring Harness, # C51322, will install in your 2013 Ford Explorer if you already have the 7-way trailer connector installed at the rear of your vehicle. If you do not have a trailer connector installed, then you will need to install a 4-way connector harness, # 118540, a Universal Installation Kit for Brake Controller, # ETBC7, and Brake controller Harness, # C51515 with the Curt Brake Controller # C51110. • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2004 Dodge Ram Without a Factory Tow Package
  • We have everything you need to install a brake controller on your 2004 Dodge Ram. Since your truck does not have any factory trailer wiring, we will want to install a trailer connector first because the brake controller will tie into the trailer connector, vehicle battery and the vehicles stoplight switch. You will notice 4 wires on the back of your brake controller. The black wire is for 12 volt power from the vehicle battery via a 30-amp circuit breaker. The white wire should be grounded...

  • How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2010 Chevy Avalanche
  • The wiring to install a trailer brake controller is located under the dash of your 2010 Chevy Avalanche. There will be 4 or 5 wires held together with a white tag that lists the functions of the wires. The bundle should be under the dash to the left of the steering column. If using Curt brake controller # C51110 you will also need wiring harness # C51515. The connections should be as follows: Brake controller white to truck white for ground Brake controller black to truck red/black...

  • Brake Controller Won't Light Brake Lights When Using Manual Override Slider On 2016 Ram 1500
  • The wire colors under the dash are not designed to match on any vehicle, they match function but not color and the Curt Brake Controller Adapter # C51458 is the correct harness for your 2016 RAM. I reached out to my friend at Curt and he confirmed that when you use the manual override slide on your Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller, # C51110, it is designed not to send power to your vehicle brake lights. It sends signal to your trailer brakes, but not to the lights. To adapt your...

  • Could Curt Triflex Replace Curt Venturer In 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • Yes a proportional Curt controller like the part # C51140 could easily replace a # C51110. It would be just a matter of unplugging the old controller and plugging in the new one. For suspension enhancement I would go with the Timbren kit part # TJRJK instead of an air bag kit because maintaining air pressure in bags can be a bit of a hassle and the Timbrens get installed and you never have to think about them again.

  • Brake Controller for a 2015 Chevy Traverse with Factory Tow Package
  • There are basically 2 types of brake controllers: time delay and proportional. I would only recommend using a time delay controller if the trailer weight never changes since they require a lot more adjustment and fine tuning to get the trailer braking right when compared to proportional controllers. A proportional controller will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much your 2015 Chevy Traverse is braking. As such it is the safest way to stop and reduces wear and tear on the...

  • Finding Stoplight Circuit in 2004 Chrysler Town and Country for Installing Brake Controller
  • When we installed the Curt Venturer part # C51110 in a similar 2010 Chrysler Town and Country we used the white wire with a green tracer for the stoplight circuit. To test the wires for being a ground you would want to use a test like part # PTW2993 to probe the wire with one end of it and on the other attach it to a known 12 volt power source. If the light comes on then you know the circuit is grounded. Check out the install video I attached that shows the Venturer installing on...

  • Installing Brake Controller On Cold Side Of Brake Switch
  • Your Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller # C51110 and Universal wiring adapter for Curt controllers # C51515 are a confirmed fit for your 2011 GMC Terrain. This wiring adapter does not directly mount into the dash because this vehicle did not have a tow package available. You will need to tap into the cold side of the brake switch near your brake pedal and you will need to attach a ground as well as a power wire. The blue wire will go from your controller to another length of wire...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Says Not Connected to Trailer
  • Since your trailer's brakes worked on another truck that would indicate that the problem is on the truck side of the equation. First and easiest thing to check is to check for corrosion on your truck's 7-way. Some fine grit sandpaper can easily remove any corrosion that would prevent the connetion from being made. Testing the brake controller is fairly easy. Sever the blue brake output wire near the brake controller leaving enough room to reconnect it and then apply the manual slide....

  • Brake Controller and Install Harness Recommendation for a 2011 Toyota Tundra
  • For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. To install this controller all you would need is the install harness part # 3040-P. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.
