Time-Delayed Braking

The Venturer applies your trailer's brakes when the brake pedal in your tow vehicle is engaged. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Venturer. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. Both the amount of braking power (output) and rate of application (sync) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, type of trailer, and size of the load. To determine which levels are best for your application, you must test out your towing setup and choose what feels best.

A time-delay controller is so named because there is a delay between the time that you initially apply the brakes in your tow vehicle and the time that the controller reaches maximum power output. Unlike a proportional brake controller, which activates your trailer's brakes based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle, the Venturer sends power out in the same way, with the same gradual delay, no matter the braking situation. Although this delay always exists, it can be adjusted by changing the sync setting.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Curt Venturer Controls and Components

The above diagram shows the controls and components of the Curt Venturer trailer brake controller.

  1. LED display
  2. Power output control
  3. Sync control
  4. Slide-bar manual override

Output Control

During the initial setup process, use the slide-bar control on top of the Venturer to adjust the output. The output control lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the output is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, slide the switch to the right. To decrease the power output, slide it to the left. The bars on the LED display indicate the output setting from 1 to 8.

Sync Setting

To adjust the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking action, use the slide-bar control on the side of the Venturer to change the sync setting. If you want to reach maximum power output faster, move the switch forward. To get smoother braking action, slide the switch backward, thus supplying power to the trailer brakes more gradually. You can alter the sync setting to suit your driving preferences or to improve handling based on changing road conditions or varied trailer loads.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. As a result, mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller.

Installation of the Venturer requires that you either purchase a custom wiring adapter designed to plug into the controller or that you hardwire the controller directly into your vehicle. To hardwire the Venturer, you must remove the plug at the end of the integrated wiring harness.

Installation Accessories

For easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required:

20-Amp circuit breaker (9506P - sold separately) for 2- to 4-brake applications

30-Amp circuit breaker (38630 - sold separately) for 6-brake applications

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Curt Brake Controller C51110 Review

Today we're going to review part number C51110. This is the Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller. This brake controller is designed for trailers with up to three axles or six brake assemblies. It is designed to be used only with electric trailer brakes. It will not work with electrical over hydraulic. It does have a limited lifetime warranty.

Now this brake controller will activate your trailer brakes with a preset intensity. The signal is sent to the trailer when the tow vehicle brakes are activated. Right here at the top you'll see there is an adjustable slide bar power output control-this will let you determine the amount of braking force. I do have this hooked up to some power so I'll show you when you set this. As you can see there's one bar showing right now so as you turn this and slide it you'll see that the bars increase-it does show one to eight bars; eight would be the maximum. You can set that to the maximum when you travel through a hilly terrain with a fully loaded trail or you can back off the output when you're towing a light weight trailer. On the very side here there's a sync setting which will let you adjust the aggressiveness with which the brakes are activated.

Again you'll see the bar showing and if watch that as I push this back you can see the green light will flash that shows you're setting the sync setting and the bars will increase all the way-would be the eight bars.If you pull it towards yourself it would reduce down to one. If you get full power output faster by moving it forward to increase the activation speed and if you pull it back you'll achieve smoother braking when you move it in the opposite direction; that'll supply power gradually. As you can see it does have the LED display right up here that'll show you brake force output. This controller does have a self-diagnostic function which will monitor the trailer connection and check for shorts. You'll be able to see here if I disconnect the trailer you'll see this red light come on. This LED red light it'll display that shows-it will glow red which means a disconnection of the trailer has occurred.

If you end up hooking it back up you'll see the red light will go off.Up here at the very front you'll see is a built in slide bar manual override and you'll see when you push that-that would be used in emergency braking situations-you'll want to have access to that. When you immediately push that all the way-it'll show you whatever your maximum output is set at and it will go to that maximum right away. This break control is a quick and easy installation. There's no need to mount it level like a proportional brake controller-it can be mounted any wheres 360 degrees but you do want to be able to see the LED display. The mounting bracket, the wiring harness comes with the plug and the hardware for the mounting bracket is included. There's also a nice quick reference guide which will show what the readings would mean in the LED display.

It does come with a limited lifetime warranty and again I just quickly want to show some of the when the brakes are applied-you'll see the output setting will come on and at the very top you'll see as you turn it-you'll turn it down-turn it all the way to the max. Then when the override is pushed it'll go to whatever the max you set it at. On the side here is the sync setting so as you push it towards the front of the vehicle you'll see that it will increase the sync setting and as you pull it back towards you it'll reduce the sync setting. That should do it for the review on part number C51110, the Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller.

Sorry for the late follow-up. I just wanted to let you know that the brake controller and wiring harness I purchased through eTrailer worked very well with my 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins 6.7L diesel. Pictures are attached for your use, as required. The trailer was an 18-foot enclosed snow machine tailer with a steel chassis. I can't remember the empty weight, but it's substantial. We towed empty and full on dry and snow covered roads from Oklahoma to Colorado and back. Even with th exhaust brake on my truck, I can't imagine towing this load through the hills and mountains without a brake controller. It's been done before, but I would say it's an unnecessary risk given the more than reasonable prices at eTrailer...it was cheap insurance pulling such a heavy rig with my family on board. The controller was definitely not your top-of-the-line model, but the adjustability and controls were more than adequate for somebody who tows occasionally. A professional may desire more proportional controls and adjustability, but not much more. This unit peformed flawlessly. Thank you for your time. Please feel free to contct me if you would like any clarification on my statements or pictures. 121176

When used with part number C51515, easy install, hardest part of install is deciding where to drill into your new vehicle's dash to mount controller, or just ask your wife :). The included test light makes finding the correct "cold" brake wire a breeze. 82283

Comments

I have been very pleased with the products. The installation was easy and they work exactly as I had hoped. I will definitely purchase any towing products I need in the future from etrailer.com

Installed easily and looks nice. Used my own screws/nuts with washers to mount through lower dash unit. Simple connection to factory wiring using Curt custom wiring C51322. 92205

The products worked great up until about a few weeks ago Thats when I sold the truck where the items were installed. lol. Really though, I very much liked how the products listed and purchased from etrailer.com were easy to find, fit exactly as described, and performed as needed. etrailer.com is always one of the first places I look when searching for items for my new truck.

simplistic and it works for my purposes. Small form factor to fit to the left of the driver side dash. 167654

Comments

For a time based controller its good for my single axle trailer. Eventually I will upgrade to the intertia based controller. Time based cant seem to find a happy medium with the brake intensity at various loads.

Great price on a nice brake controller, and super fast delivery. I have used etrailer a number of times, and am always amazed at the prices and delivery. Will use them whenever I need similar products. 229132

Im having the same problem as Mark. The controller seems to want to apply more and more braking as time goes on. I will probably buy a better controller soon.

seems to work great, just right for my small single axle trailer. 122699

after 8k miles of towing with this controller, I wish I had bought a better one. the controller works fine, but is hard to keep in adjustment. one day it works fine, and the next its applying too much, or too little braking. If you plan on doing a lot of towing, buy a proportional controller.

Thanks for your follow up and reply. I agree with you the proportional brake controllers are much better, especially for frequent towing. Our best selling ones are the Tekonsha P2 # 90885

The controller works as advertised although we've yet to get it perfectly adjusted and won't until we have the SUV and trailer loaded for camping. The video didn't make clear the difference between a time delay controller like this and one that adjusts braking force in response to the tow vehicle's braking force. So I wonder, now that I know, which would really have been better for my situation. This so far tends to lock up my trailer wheels near the end of the brake cycle while seeming too gentle in applying them early on. Better adjustments may help, of course; time will tell. I'd recommend you discuss your planned installation with eTrailer before purchase. 178249

Comments

I have used this for a full year and agree... They seem light at the start of brake cycle then lock-up at the end. I have found that as a result I have it set on the gentle side.

I installed the Curt C51110 along with Plug & Play C51382 into my 2016 Frontier. The installation took me about 2 minutes. I did not drill holes or use the supplied mounting bracket, just Velcro. Works perfectly! 291590

This is my first experience with installing and/or using an electric brake controller so I'm by no means an expert. However, the Curt Venturer was easy to order and etrailer.com noted other parts I would need to complete the installation and use the product. It was delivered in a timely manner and was exactly as specified. I had my mechanic do the installation on my 1998 Nissan Pathfinder and it took him a couple of hours because of the age of the vehicle. The controller is easy and intuitive to set up and use and it works well. I will keep etrailer.com on my list of go-to places for my towing needs. 143219

With this brake controller and wiring harness installation was a snap in my 2014 Ford F150 STX. The unit is so light I used velcro to attach it to the dash rather then drill holes and use screws with the bracket provided. Easy to adjust the brake sync and braking force. Just a great product for the price. 115342

Super easy installation on my 99 Dodge Ram. I have only tested this item but I will be using it on a road trip soon. although I believe it will work perfectly. easy installation I recommend purchasing the wiring harness that plugs in under the dash. you can install this in about 10 minutes or less. 262434

It looks so tiny! Not quite as big as my Droid cell phone. Unit plugged right in to the optional adapter cord for my 2006 Tundra. Sensitivity and synch features were very easy to adjust. Slows my two axle, four brake Aljo trailer without dragging or locking up the wheels. Works great...For the price it is a real bargain. I would recommend this to anyone needing a simple trailer break controller for a lightweight truck/trailer combination. 108178

I purchased a trailer hitch, wiring harness, brake controller and all the additional necessary wiring for my 2008 Kia Sedona. Other than issues I encountered unrelated to the items I purchased, everything installed smoothly and continues to operate as expected after 6 months. I would definitely recommend this site to anyone. In addition, their on point instructional videos made things even easier than I could have hoped. 236938

Received it quickly. Instructions clear and easy to follow. Installed in about 15 minutes. Used Velcro on top of controller and bottom of dash (beneath air bag panel) to secure instead of the furnished bracket and can easily reach top slide and slide on left side for adjustment. After hooking up to trailer it took about 10 minutes to adjust and a short test ride on the highway to verify adjustment. Great product. 109949

- C51110

by: Andy W.07/08/2014

Installing was pretty easy. Since my trailer has only 2 wheels I think the 10 gauge wire was a little overkill. I mounted the control box vertically. I tested it with my trailer and had to install an adjustable resister because my brakes are too large (12 x 2) and locked up at 2 bars. Brakes are from a mobile home axle I got years ago. Instructions are very good. My car is a 1980 Plymouth Volare station wagon. 140146

- C51110

by: Eric06/23/2015

Easy to install and works. However, it is very sensitive to adjustments. The breaks are either barely on, or locking up. This will work for me as it is installed in a spare vehicle and not my main vehicle used for towing. If you are planning to tow on a regular basis, or tow different trailers, invest in a better quality brake controller. For the same trailer a couple times per year, this system will work. 206779

First unit looked like it might have been opened. Was immediately sent another and provided an RMA to return the first one. Got the replacement before I even got a chance to send back the original. Unit installed and worked great, very sensitive though, on my new RAM 1500. Had to turn both controls almost completely down for it to not grab too much. Great price, service, delivery time. Couldn't be better. 219816

Brake controller worked great. Hooked up like it was supposed to and is good quality. Made a 1000 mile trip with it and it never missed a beat. DON'T use the super cheap shipping if you're in a hurry. It's 5.5 hour drive from my house to the etrailer warehouse, but they shipped it from one side of MO to the other, then flew it to OH and back to me in IN. Ended up being 1 week from order to delivery. 120011

Only recently installed, but seams to work well on the test. Had a question on the installation and called the Curt co., and the man there was very helpful with a solution for where to connect the red wire if the cold side of the brake switch is grounded when the pedal is all the way up. Just connect to the 3rd brake light wire. 346410

Trailer brake works great. I installed it in my 2010 Dodge Charger to control the brakes on my pop up camper.Only thing is to tell in the directions that you need to hook to the brake switch wire that is powered with the brake lever with the key off. Could be a disaster in the dash. 99317

Ordered my brake controller for my tundra and it worked great. I had already been to a local store that kept providing me the wrong part so I took the time to research and this was exactly what I needed. 321285

Ask the Experts about this Curt Brake Controller
Do you have a question about this Brake Controller?

  • Troubleshooting A Curt Venturer Brake Controller That Is No Longer Working
  • Per the instructions for the Curt Venturerr Brake Controller, part # C51110, a blinking red light means there is a brake overload or a short. The probable solutions listed for this is to confirm the brake maximum load of 6. If that is not the issue, then you will need to locate the short and fix it. If you find no short in the system, the controller may be bad. You will need to test the wires at the back of the brake controller for proper input and output. The red wire should only have...

  • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2004 Dodge Ram Without a Factory Tow Package
  • We have everything you need to install a brake controller on your 2004 Dodge Ram. Since your truck does not have any factory trailer wiring, we will want to install a trailer connector first because the brake controller will tie into the trailer connector, vehicle battery and the vehicles stoplight switch. You will notice 4 wires on the back of your brake controller. The black wire is for 12 volt power from the vehicle battery via a 30-amp circuit breaker. The white wire should be grounded...

  • What Is Needed To Install Brake Controller On 2005 Ford F-150 With Factory Tow Package
  • On your 2005 Ford F-150 with the towing package, there will be a port under the dash that the Curt Custom Wiring Adapter, part # C51322 plugs into. I have attached a photo that has a red arrow pointing to the location on your truck. The Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller, part # C51110 is a time-delayed brake controller designed for a trailer with electric brakes only. It uses a preset sensitivity setting to activate your trailer brakes when you press the brake pedal in your truck....

  • Troubleshooting Venturer Brake Controller Red Light Comes On Intermittently
  • I can help you figure out what's going on with your Curt Venture # C51110. First lets start with the Red Light that comes on intermittently. The loss of the trailer, intentional in your case, should result in a solid single red light. If this is more of your issue than blinking, the controller is just functioning the way its supposed to when the trailer isn't hooked up. If your red light is flashing instead of solidly lit, according to the directions, a flashing red light indicates...

  • How do Electric Trailer Brakes Work on a Travel Trailer and How Often to Grease Bearings
  • Electric brakes do not use brake fluid. They work by a brake controller sending back voltage to an electro-magnet. When energized the magnet stick to the armature surface of the brake drum. The spinning of the drum pulls out the brake shoes and the pads make contact with the inside of the drum, slowing the trailer. As far as how often to grease the bearings it really depends on how much the trailer is used, how many miles are put on it, the conditions you are driving in, and so on. You...

  • Brake Controller Installation on 2014 Ford E350 Van
  • The vehicle is unlikely to have the connector behind the dash unless it has the factory equipped 7-way on the rear bumper. If it does, the connector that the controller would plug into is clipped to the rear of the small cubbyhole or coin tray in the dash. You'll access the connector by removing the coin tray. If the van doesn't have the factory 7-way, you'll need to hardwire the brake controller using our Install Kit, part # ETBC7. If your vehicle is a motorhome on a van cutaway chassis,...

  • Brake Controller for a 2015 Chevy Traverse with Factory Tow Package
  • There are basically 2 types of brake controllers: time delay and proportional. I would only recommend using a time delay controller if the trailer weight never changes since they require a lot more adjustment and fine tuning to get the trailer braking right when compared to proportional controllers. A proportional controller will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much your 2015 Chevy Traverse is braking. As such it is the safest way to stop and reduces wear and tear on the...

  • How to Find Brake Switch Wire on a 2003 Chevy S10 for Brake Controller Install
  • In order to determine which of the wires coming from the stoplight switch of your 2003 Chevy S10 should be used to install a brake controller you will need to use a circuit tester like part # 3808 to test the wires till you find one that sees voltage when the brakes are applied and none when they are released. We don't have specific wire color info for your vehicle, but testing the wires will be pretty easy and will tell you which one to use.

  • On your Ford 2010 F-150, the harness location should be located under the dash, above the brake pedal and taped to another harness. I have attached a photo that shows the typical location for the harness location on your truck. • How to Insatll a Curt Brake Controller in a 2014 GMC Sierra
  • Yes, you can. If your 2014 GMC Sierra is a 1500 model all you would need is the Curt Wiring Adapter part # C51451 to install your Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller # C51110. If your 2014 is a 2500 or 3500 the connections are available under the dash of your vehicle. You would want to wire the controller up to the wires under your dash. • Is there a Direct Plug In Port on a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado for Installing a Brake Controller
  • For your 2011 Chevrolet Silverado there is not a direct plug in application under the dash that will connect the brake controller and your vehicle. On that generation of Silverados the wiring that connects to the brake controller is established from the factory and is located under the steering column. You will need to locate this wiring bundle, and hard wire your truck wiring to the plug that connects to the back of your brake controller (part # C51515). I have included a helpful article...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Says Not Connected to Trailer
  • Since your trailer's brakes worked on another truck that would indicate that the problem is on the truck side of the equation. First and easiest thing to check is to check for corrosion on your truck's 7-way. Some fine grit sandpaper can easily remove any corrosion that would prevent the connetion from being made. Testing the brake controller is fairly easy. Sever the blue brake output wire near the brake controller leaving enough room to reconnect it and then apply the manual slide....

This harness plugs inline with your tail light wiring connectors and will provide the turn signal features for your trailer wiring. • Curt Venturer Red LED Light Only Comes On with No Trailer Connected and Stepping on Brake Pedal
  • On the Curt Venturer brake controller # C51110 the LED light should glow red all the time when no trailer is connected. If the light is flashing red when you step on the brake pedal then the controller is sensing an overload or short circuit. You mentioned that you have not towed the trailer in awhile. What usually happens is corrosion on or inside of the trailer or vehicle side connectors. Make sure the trailer and vehicle side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. Since...

  • On the Curt Venturer brake controller # C51110, if the red dot is solid that indicates that the trailer is not connected, or at least the brake controller is sensing a disconnected condition. This seems like what is going on. When the trailer jerks that is the brakes engaging and then it goes out again. The likely culprit is a dirty or corroded trailer connector, brake wiring, or the magnets themselves. Make sure the vehicle and trailer side connectors are clean and corrosion free inside...

A couple of things you should know about this controller that may be relevant to your towing requirements are that this controller is to be used only with electric trailer brakes. You mentioned that you already have different ball mounts and likely also have properly sized balls to tow the trailer so I can skip that part.
