Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.
When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.
Adjustable Channel Design
The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

Today we're going to take a look at the Demco primed hydraulic break acuator. It has an 8-inch adjustable channel center and an 8,000 pound weight capacity. Now this hydraulic acuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. The adjustable channel right here has three different mounting positions for the coupler. Now the composite master cylinder right in the front here, if I turn this over, you can see underneath, this composite master cylinder is very durable and efficient. It is a glass reinforced nylon construction which will help resist rust and corrosion.
It has a very large reservoir to provide increased capacity for brake fluid and at the top here, you notice here it has the automotive style diaphragm cap and that'll help create a completely enclosed system to prevent any contamination of your brake fluid. The acetol co-polymer lining on the inside of this will provide a nice smooth operation as the acuator telescopes in and out. The breakaway you can see right here, the cable and the breakaway itself is all included. This is a heavy duty steel construction. You can see it has a nice prime finish to it. It is a weld-on installation and it is made in the USA.
A few specs on this, the application again is for trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. Again, the gross towing rate capacity is 8,000 pounds. The maximum tongue weight capacity is 800 pounds. Now the channel width, let me try to turn this around so we can give you a measurement. The channel width, which is right here that it fits onto is going to be right at 3 inches.
The channel height, which is the adjustable portion right here is going to be right at 8 inches and again it's for mounting onto a straight 3-inch wide trailer ton. Now this does have a standard model number of DA91 and one last thing on this acuator I do want to mention is because this actuator does not include a reserve lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free backing breaks so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer brakes.
