What Kind of Sealant do I Want to Use to Patch My Cargo Trailer Roof to Keep it Air Tight?

Updated 03/14/2025 | Published 03/09/2025

Question:

I have a cargo trailer damaged by hurricane Helene. I need to patch the roof with a new metal panel to cover the damaged spot and plan to rivet it down to the roof framing. What sealant do you recommend to go between the new metal and the old? Thank you for your help!

Hello James,

I am very sorry to hear that your trailer was damaged by the hurricane, I hope there is not too much other damage that needs repairing. Glad you are OK and able to write in.

For sealing the new metal panel to your cargo trailer’s roof, I’d recommend using butyl tape # AL28FJ between the new and old metal surfaces before riveting. This will create a strong, flexible seal that helps prevent water intrusion. Once the panel is secured, you’ll want to go over the edges and rivet heads with self-leveling sealant # 34427034145-1, which will spread out smoothly and ensure a fully waterproof seal. If any part of the repair is on a vertical surface or a steep slope, it’s better to use non-sag lap sealant # 344270341437-1, since it won’t run or drip. This combination should give you a durable, weatherproof patch that holds up well over time.

Do you have a lot of other things you are repairing due to the Helene?
