Recommended Trailer and Bike Rack for Hauling a E-bike

Published 10/29/2024

Question:

Do you sell trailers? I need to buy a light trailer for my cmax hybrid so that I can pull my ebike. The hitchmount rack sticks out too far with adapter and is too heavy, especially with the ebike on it.

Hey Michelle! For a light trailer, I recommend the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer item # Y08107. It has a 250 lbs weight capacity, measures 6-1/2' wide x 11' long x 22" tall, and attaches to a 2" hitch ball. It comes with two round crossbars that you can attach most bike racks, watersport racks, and cargo baskets.

Our highest capacity bike rack that would mount to the Yakima item # Y08107 is the Inno Tire Hold II Roof Bike Rack item # INA389. It has a 50 lbs capacity.

Hi Jerred, Thanks for your speedy reply ?? My bike is 77 lbs and bike rack is 48 pounds and I guess the 2" to 1.25 adapter is about 10. Since the whole shebang is sticking about 2 feet out from the receiver, I have to multiply that tongue weight by some factor. The worry is how much this exceeds the capacity of my Cmax car frame that it's bolted to. Thanks.

@MichelleG You're welcome! Happy to help! That set up is most likely not going to work, but it might. You'll want to make sure your bike rack can be used with an adapter like the item # e43YR you purchased. This information will be in your owner's manual. It probably isn't since your bike rack has that high of a capacity. To address your length from the receiver question, the Curt Hitch item # C12092 you have only has a 300 lbs tongue weight capacity and using an adapter reduces this by 50%. You're underneath this with your bike rack and bike though.

@JerredH Right but if you extend the rack 24 inches from the fulcrum, That is going to increase the downward force even more...so that's the weight I'm trying to determine since this is acting as a fulcrum in a 3rd class lever scenario. I'm wondering if this will create an unsafe situation or damage to my car.
