I would be happy to help you set your 2012 Toyota RAV4 up to tow a trailer. Since you're needing a brake controller you will have to add a 7-way. Additionally, with the options for your vehicle you'll end up with both a 4-way and a 7-way connector because of the available parts.

The Curt Hitch item # C13149 is a great option but our etrailer item # e98864 is a better option. They're both manufactured by Curt but ours has a better finish and it's a more affordable option. Both hitches are class III's with a 2" receiver. They will definitely cover your 3,500 lbs towing capacity.

Here are the rest of the parts you will need to set up your RAV4:

4-Way Connector - Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector item # C56165. This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your RAV4's wiring harness, which is located behind the tail lights.

7-Way Connector - Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your vehicle with an included bracket.

Brake Controller - Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness item # RED52VR

Ball Mount - Curt Towing Starter Kit for 2" Hitches item # C45534. This towing kit will provide you with a 2" ball and a fixed ball mount with a 3/4" rise and 2" drop. It also includes a hitch pin and clip, hitch receiver lock with keys, hitch cover, and a storage case.
