Trailer Hitch Ball Sizes Commonly Used With a Class III Receiver
Question:
Which ball size is more standard for a class 3 trailer hitch, the 2inch or the 2- 5/16? Thank you.

While most your class 3 trailer hitch receivers are rated for 3,500lbs-8,000lbs the hitch ball size is generally determined on the trailer. The 1-7/8" Hitch Ball # 19260 is generally found on very small trailers with a total weight below 2,000lbs. The 2" Hitch Ball # 40038 will be the most common size used on most utility trailers you would be able to tow. The 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C40005 is commonly found on larger trailers but is also the most popular size used on camping trailers. We do offer a Convert-A-Ball Interchangeable Ball Set # 900b that allows you to easily switch between ball sizes if you tow multiple different trailers.
I find having a ball mount like the B&W Tow & Stow 3-Ball Mount # BWTS10048B is great as you will have all 3 ball sizes and be able to adjust the height from a 5-1/2" rise to a 5" drop to keep the trailer level while towing.
