Best Weight Distribution with Sway Control for 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum Towing R-Pod RP-180
Question:
Hi eTrailer. My tow vehicle is an 2015 F150 Platinum with the 6cyl EcoBoost with Firestone airbags. I just bought and R-Pod rp180. I would like to get a sway control system and/or WDH for the set up. I am worried about control and sway on highways and in wind. 1 Do I need a WDH with sway control or can I get by with just a sway control kit? I think all I need is a sway control kit as the r-pod is well within the ratings of the F150. I can tow north of 12000 pounds and have a 1450 pound payload. The r-pod has tounge weight of 330 pounds, about 2650 pound dry weight and a cargo capacity of 1150 pounds. So do I need a WDH or just a sway control kit? 2 Which sway control kit do you recommend? Reese and Curtis each make one. There Reese mounts to the trailer with 6 bolts and the Curtis mounts with 4 bolts. I would prefer the Reese as 6 seems beefier than 4. Is this what you would recommend. 3 I will need a ball mount and ball. I think the F150 has a two inch receiver hitch and I think the R-pod takes a two inch ball. Which models do you recommend? Do I need any other parts to set this up? Thank you for your help.

Your 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum does need a full weight distribution system, and the reason for that is a WDS is needed when the trailer weight is more than 50% of your vehicle's weight (GVWR). Based on my research your 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum has a GVWR of between 6,800 lbs and 7,000 lbs, and your R-Pod has a GVWR of 3,800 lbs, which is more than 50% so you definitely want a WDS with sway control (additionally, you mentioned your truck can tow over 12,000 lbs, but no 2015 F-150 can tow that much based on Ford's towing guide. The max is 11,900 lbs and that is very specific to a certain cab, axle ratio, wheelbase and more so I do recommend ensuring your capacities via Ford).
The best weight distribution system with sway control for your 2015 Ford F-150 Platinum towing an R-Pod RP-180 with a GVWR of 3,800 lbs and 330 lb dry tongue weight is the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET because this system uses 4 points of sway control via friction in the spring bars for optimal sway control compared to other systems that use half the sway control points. It also uses clamp-on brackets so you won't have to drill along your trailer frame, and allows you to back up with the system on.
This system comes with everything you need for installation though it is recommended you use thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 to help install the 2" hitch ball. Since this system acts as the ball mount/hitch ball you will not need those separately. I have added links to video reviews as well as a help article on weight distribution for you which I recommend checking out.
