Recommended Way To Transport a Lawn Mower with a 2001 Toyota Camry

Published 02/13/2018

Question:

Hi, Conner: What about a hitch adapter to go from 1-1/4 to 2"? I'm a tad concerned about a 21-inch mower fitting on the 21x55 Rola cargo carrier you suggested. Might be a tad sung, and I might want an inch or two of width for wiggle room. Would a hitch adapter work for the trailer hitch receiver you recommended for my 2001 Toyota Camry? 36336

We have cargo carriers that work with trailer hitch receivers from Class I to Class IV. However, your options will diminish with the lower your hitch is rated. The highest rated hitch we have for your 2001 Toyota Camry is a Class II like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36336 which has a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening.

The best cargo carrier we have for your vehicle and mower is the Rola Cargo Carrier part # 59507. The Rola Cargo Carrier is is rated for use with Class II receivers and has internal dimensions of 55" long x 21-3/4" wide x 4-3/4" tall. The 21-3/4" width will be the widest cargo carrier we have for a Class II hitch. If the mower does not fit completely inside the carrier then you can always secure it further with a set of ratchet straps like part # SM54FR.

I have attached a review video of the above carrier on a similar 2017 Toyota Camry for you as well.

A hitch adapter that will go from a 1-1/4" to a 2" like part # HTAD will reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50%. For example, say your hitch/vehicle has a tongue weight capacity of 100. That means the mover and carrier would have to weigh less than 50 lbs which is not ideal. It is also important to note that the hitch designed for your vehicle like part # 36336 will be rated much higher than the vehicle is capable of handling and you will need to abide by the lower of the two ratings being the hitch/vehicle. As previously stated, the 21-3/4" internal width of the Rola Cargo Carrier part # 59507 will be the widest cargo carrier we have for a Class II hitch. The Draw-Tite hitch and Rola carrier will be your best option as there are very few others.
