How To Determine Axle Weight Capacity For A Fish House Trailer

Question:

How do I calculate the trailers axle rating on a crank down fish house trailer? The company claims that each wheel assembly is 3500# with a 6 bolt hub. With a single wheel on each side they come up with 7000#....is this right or is it still just a 3500# axle rating?

Expert Reply:

If you have a single axle trailer with a 3,500-lb axle then your total weight capacity is 3,500-lbs with each wheel bearing 1,750-lbs. There should be a sticker or plate somewhere on the frame near the front of the trailer that lists the official capacity. You should also find a sticker/label on the axle tube that gives axle capacity.

Also, the trailer can only be rated as high as the lowest rated component. For example, if you have a coupler that is rated for 5,000-lbs like Item # CT-5003-Z but everything else is rated at 3,500-lbs then you have to go by the 3,500-lbs amount.

If you send me more details about your trailer like axle capacity, how many axles, axle diameter, and your bolt pattern, I can give your a more specific answer and recommendation.

I am also attaching some additional information for you to check out that should help.
