Replacement Tires for Old Travel Trailer Tires G78-15
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
I have a 1982 TT double axel. The wheels have a 4 bolt pattern, 9.5 inch across. 3 wheels have G78 15 tires and one has 215/75/15. All run within 2 inches of the wheel well. Will this tire be a good replacement? I know its diameter is a little smaller, but that would give more clearance in the wheel well.If not, any suggestions? Thanks

Yes, the Provider Radial Tires, # TR20515D, will be a good replacement for your G78-15 tires. The G78-15 tires have an overall diameter of 27.1" and the 205/75/15 have a diameter of 27.13". Your clearance of just 2" is concerning. Typically, we recommend no less than 4.5" between the tire tread and the wheel well for bump clearance on trailers with leaf spring suspension.
It is fine to change the size of your travel trailer tires as long as the tires you select are rated high enough for the application and you have enough clearance at your fender to accommodate the tire size. It is important that all of your tire sizes (including the section width) and construction (radial or bias) match, which is why I also recommend that you replace all of your tires, including the spare, at the same time. If you are unable to replace all of them, you should at least replace both tires on an axle at the same time to prevent uneven wear and provide a more comfortable ride.
The Taskmaster Provider tires that you selected are load range D, and have a maximum load of 2150 lb. For your double-axle travel trailer, the maximum load you could carry on these tires would be 8600 lb. If you are within that range, these tires will work for your application. We also offer replacement rims in the 4 on 9.44" pattern, # AM20312. And replacement valve stems, # AM20903. I've provided links to some helpful articles and videos.
