Fairly easy to install by myself with the instructions, fits my 2004 Ford Taurus SE Wagon perfectly. I tow a small DK2 5x7 utility trailer and hardly notice the thing's behind the car. Hitch is very stable, fills all my needs.

Very happy with this purchase, and highly recommend this trailer hitch!

the hitch was in good shape when received it, but the box was in bad shape. when i went to install it, the part that bolts to the bumper mount would not line up. i had to install shims between the hitch and the bumper mount so the hitch mount point would bolt to the car in a flat manor, not cocked. the bumper mount on the car has a raised surface around the bumper impact absorber that would not let the hitch mount flat, without adding shims. there was no room to move the hitch from side to clear both sides.

The hitch is built well and will do the job very well. Customer service was easy to work with. Fairly long wait time to talk to some one. But the package came and it was torn up and was taped up. part of the hitch was hanging out the box. Everything was still in it and seems to be fine.

I installed this hitch on my old 2002 Mercury Sable and use it to tow my Harbor Freight utility trailer. It was fairly easy for me, a 63 old man,to install by myself. I can't say enough good things about etrailer website, wealth of information, ease of ordering and super-speed shipping. This makes my second hitch from them, the first for our Honda Civic to transport our bikes with a hitch rack, also bought from etrailer.

I just put the hitch on today. It is on a 2004 Ford Taurus with a carbon canister on the rear passenger side. I have no idea what a carbon canister does. Working alone, this took me 3 hours to install just the trailer hitch. I had to re-watch 2 videos on this site to figure out what I was doing with that carbon canister. They didn't have a lot of detail in the video, and the carbon canister I have has permanent plastic clamps on it which became a bit of a problem for me to put the canister back in place, but after directing the hose around the top of the canister, I think that fixed the problem. Ideally you're supposed to re-route the vapor hose through the hitch.
The included bolts are extended to get a good strong hold on the frame. Unfortunately this means you can't use a ratchet, which sucks because the driver side only has about a 45 degree cranking range. And be careful not to get cross threaded. The bolts required wrench tightening after you get the first thread fixed in the welded nut on the frame. I'm pretty sure one of mine is cross threaded now and destroyed, but it is holding securely so I'm just going to hope that it will handle the load.
I had to really crack open the access holes in the frame to get the block and nut combo inside the frame, but the video said to, so I hope that means I didn't just destroy the structural integrity of my car's frame.
After tightening all the bolts I put the muffler back on fairly easily with some WD-40. The carbon canister went back on pretty easily. Honestly, I don't even know what a carbon canister does, but I just wish it wasn't there to begin with.
All in all, I'm glad I took the 3 hours to install it, but if I had help it would not have taken so long. If one person pulls the muffler off while the other takes down the carbon canister, then holds the hitch in place while person 1 starts the bolts into the nuts, then person 2 immediately starts prying open the access holes in the frame while person 1 tapes the blocks to the nuts. This process could go quite a lot smoother and quicker. Just take your time and don't mess up your car or get frustrated with the hitch. Yeah I feel like I've been benching 40 lbs all day, but the car is in tact, and the hitch is installed. I ran out of time before I could install the wiring harness, but I got the trunk accessed for it so all I have to do is drill my grounding bolt and test the wires and attach the harness. That should be easy, even for one person who is a novice like me. And now that it is done, it looks shiny and ready to hook up a trailer to it. Judging by the way that hitch feels, the bolts will give out and the car's frame will rip off before any damage occurs to that hitch. And the coating on it is durable too so I don't think rust will start showing until I've bottomed out on some ridiculous curbs and driveways a few times.
I don't recommend installing it alone. Seriously, if you have any friends at all, they can watch the video and do this with you. I mean it! The videos help more than I can express to you.
For less than $1,000 I now have everything I needed to buy a truck for. So I just spent $250 on a trailer hitch and $700 on a trailer, and that's a lot easier on the pocketbook than $30,000 on a new truck. Yeah, I'm cheap. At the last minute I decided to change my rating from 4 to 5 stars because the only problem I had was not related to the hitch itself. It's a great product.

This trailer hitch is well made, and a suitable class 2, for towing an open trailer with a light two-place aircraft. Also for occasional rental of a U-haul box trailer.

Although I selected the Taurus Wagon version, this one is for the car version but worked out OK. The bolt holes did line up OK, except for one on the left arm that was in an optional hole that was further away from the insertion hole. A bit tricky to get nut and plate aligned for threading the bolt in place. This unit bolts up tight and no drilling or filing of holes required.

Biggest problem was removing the two existing rusted bolts. Cutting off the rusted threaded ends of the bolts, would eliminate having to unthread the rusted section back through the nuts would an option. A long handled ring wrench would be a great help due to the restricted access to the bolts.

The very helpful staff on the phone got the item shipped promptly and delivered as promised on time.

One shipping comment - is that the hitch metalwork seemed undamaged, but the packing was inadequate to stop the metal ends from braking through the cardboard boxes in two different shipping cases. The end wrapping was OK but the heavy metal part was free to slide around in the box which caused holes.

product arrived Sat. Aug. 7. I had to deliver a customer's car on monday and hurt my back (a chronic problem) and could not install this hitch until Thursday. The box was punctured by the extended "legs" of the hitch and the powdercoat was deeply scratched in four places. Once installed they were hidden. The installation was very difficult and required cutting a large hole in the left side frame and making and installing a new, heavier nut plate. I feel the design could have been much better

  • Will Curt Hitch Part C12232 Fit a 1999 Mercury Sable
Installing this hitch should not be a problem on your 1999 Mercury Sable, even with a factory dual exhaust. You will need to temporarily detach an exhaust hanger while installing the hitch. I have a solution for you, but the 36216 hitch will not fit the 2001 Ford Taurus Wagon. I cannot recommend you modify a hitch to fit your vehicle because it will compromise the structural integrity of the hitch as well as not carry the same weight ratings. It also wouldn't be covered by a warranty as well as damage the frame of your vehicle, and is potentially life threatening if it falls off during transit. The best thing to do is sell your current hitch to offset the cost of purchasing...
