Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Plugged in the new Hopkins # 56101 wiring kit to my 2005 Chevy Silverado truck and this wiring harness is defective. Left side running and turn signals do not work, right side turn signal, right side marker lights and license plate lights work. Very disappointed after waiting over one week.

Wow, what a great company to deal with! Am in the process of making my GMC Yukon a tow dingy and called to order the parts. Got to etrailer in my search and it ended there. These people KNOW their trailers and equipment, not only did I get everything I wanted for the best price on the net, but in two instances staff recommended other ways to do the same job that saved me about $309.00. There is one sales rep there, Katie D. who is on the top of her job, an immense help ordering, also pointing out where I can get additional help thru video that etrailer has. Just a great company to deal with.

I bought this wiring kit about a year ago. It worked great on my first trip towing my 2013 Chevy Silverado to Glacier National Park from KC and back. When I tried using it again about 6 months later it didn't work. I tried to unplug it to test the circuit and the tabs that keep it fastened together broke off. I gave up on it.

by:

Very nice fit. Having a more durable wrap over the wire would be nice but I had some to use.

by:

This is great. It will install very eas ily.

Chevrolet Avalanche

This kit is soooo much easier than having to splice in all the various components to get the same result. It is literally plug-and-play.
The relay went in pretty smooth too, only problem was finding the wires under a very crowded dash in my Chevy Avalanche. By the way, the white wire from the brake switch plug is the one you need.

by:

Product worked exactly as described. Thrilled about not having to cut my wires to make my lights work when flat towing. Bill E at etrailer was a great help, put me on this awesome product.

2013 Chevrolet Silverado

I Installed on my 2013 Silverado with no problems. I pull the pickup with a Triple E Empress RV and have gone from Iowa to Key West last winter and from Iowa to Prince Edwards Island Canada last summer.

by:

Excellent customer service when ordering. Wiring kit arrived earlier than expected. Kit fit as advertised and minimal installation time. I would recommend etrailer for any towing, trailering, or RV accessories you need. Will definitely shop again.

2007 GMC Sierra Classic

Very good product. Only difficulty was in ordering. Not seeing, on line, the product I wanted prompted me to make a phone call. In which I was sent a splice harness when asked for a plug and play harness. This caused me to return it at my own expense. Bottom line,,,,make sure you know "Exactly" the harness you are needing to avoid exchanges as they come at your expense.

again the order was handled promptly and received quickly. We appreciate you keeping us advised when the order is shipped and when it can be expected. We ordered something else from another company the same day and have not even received a response that they have received the order, but they put the debit through and got their money. Well pleased with your company.

Installed today, no problems, looks to be good quality and everything works
Make sure you hold the lock open when plugging it in or you will have trouble.
Not sure it is long enough for a long bed.

  • Installation Of Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring For 2011 GMC Sierra Pickup Truck
I pulled one of the Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring Kit, part # HM56101 from our warehouse to take a look at the installation instructions. It can be confusing since they show the junction box that can be used on either the driver side or the passenger side. If you look on the frame at the rear of your truck on the driver side it will be adjacent to the spare tire. There will be 4 connectors plugged into the junction box. You will need to find the blue connector and disconnect it. Then plug the...

In order to flat tow your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 behind your RV, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. I also recommend checking your owner's manual for the Sierra for any specific guidelines or restrictions when it comes to towing the truck with all four wheels on the ground. Starting with the base plates, if your Sierra 1500 is the LD model, I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682. If you have the HD model,...

The cause is most likely a bad converter box on your Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56101. • How to Keep Blue Ox Patriot II from Draining Battery in 2008 GMC Sierra 1500
Since the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56101 has built-in diodes you will not get any feedback through the wiring. No additional wiring or kit is required to keep that from happening. Depending on how far you are traveling and how much braking you are doing, it could be possible that the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR would drain your battery, especially if the ignition key has to be left in the on position. To help eliminate the possibility of your battery becoming drained I highly...

It will not allow your Tahoe to control trailer lights. To add a 4-way connector that can be used to control trailer lights you will need the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package item # C55384.
