Replacement SuperLatch, Lock and Key for a Yakima SkyBox Roof Mounted Cargo Box

Updated 02/05/2021 | Published 11/13/2017

Question:

Hi, someone attempted to break into my Yakima skybox and failed. However, they did manage to leave a huge mess, as you can see in the photo. Now the handle is stuck in the locked position, and only another side of the box can be open. Im looking to replace the damaged handle. Right now, I have one key for everything, roofbox, rack, etc. If I order a replacement handle from you guys, is there anyway to make sure the core on the new part will match my current key I have the key number? Thanks!

The Replacement SuperLatch Handle kit, part # Y8880348 will include everything you need to replace both handles and comes prepackaged with a pair of matching SKS locks and keys that you can replace the existing.

In this case, I do recommend a complete replacement to ensure there wasn't any damage to the other latch that isn't entirely visible or could become a problem later on.

If you just want to replace the lock without replacing the SuperLatch handles, you'll a Yakima SKS Change Key, part # Y8007835. The change key is required to completely insert the new core into the lock.

Then, you'll get a matching replacement core by searching for "Y8771-XXXX" where XXXX is replaced with the code printed on the front of the other lock. For instance, if your lock number is A135, you'll be looking for part # Y8771-A135 to replace with a matching core.

A matching replacement key is available for core A135 as part # Y8772-A135, and you can find your personal lock code by using the same method as for the lock core.

I have maybe a similar issue. I lost the key to my Yakima skybox. Locksmith tried to pick the lock to open it, but when doing so the lock core came out. Now one side of the box is locked without a lock core and the other side is open. Any idea how to open the "locked" side? And since one side is open so I can access the interior of the box, can replace the superlatch assembly without first getting it unlocked?

You should be able to replace the latch assembly without having to unlock that locked side. You'll need part # Y8880348 and you may need to adjust the new assembly so that it fits in the mounting location correctly since the latch is in the locked position.

@JonG the key broke off in one of the super latches. Is it possible to replace that super latch in this situation? Thanks!

@SarahB Possibly. I'm linking one of our Q&A pages that has the instructions linked that you can check out. Try following these directions to see if this allows you to remove the lock or not.
