Question:
To replace the cable only do you need power going to the switch to get it to release

Sounds like you are trying to replace the cable on the breakaway switch of your trailer. If you are trying to pull the plunger out you would not need to put any current on any of the wires to get the plunger to release. It is pretty hard to release by design. It takes about 40 lbs of force to remove.
We sell several different replacement plungers and cables for several different brands of breakaway systems. Without knowing what brand system you have it would be hard for me to pick out the correct part you would need. So I attached a link to the right that has all of the ones we carry listed.
If you can't figure out which one you need, or can't get the plunger to release from the switch you could replace the switch and plunger with part # HM20014. The switches are universal between manufacturers so this would work on whatever system you have.
