Where Does Specialty Recreation Skylight Install Sealant Get Installed

Updated 09/08/2026 | Published 09/03/2026

Question:

I am looking to purchase a polycarbonate skylight . I understand you need to use a special butyl sealant . Does this special sealant go over the flange in place of a dicor self leveling sealant? Or is it just used under the flange ? How many tubes would be needed for a 14x22 skylight?

Hey Duane, for the Specialty Recreation 14" x 22" polycarbonate skylight # SR87RR we sell the sealant goes in two places:

Under the flange: Butyl tape is optional but recommended as an additional primary seal between the skylight flange and roof.
Screw the skylight down.

On top of the flange: Apply the polycarbonate-safe sealant over the flange edges and screw heads, just like you'd normally use self-leveling lap sealant around a roof accessory. For this you can use the part # SR76RR.

Do you sell the butyl tape you mentioned? How many tubes of polycarbonate safe sealant would be needed to cover the flange edges ?

@DuaneC We do have butyl tape like the part # AL66FJ which is a 20 foot roll.
