Will the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13703 fit I-Beam Frames

Updated 06/24/2020 | Published 08/13/2014

Question:

I have a 2004 Jayco 291RLTS 5th wheel with an I-beam frame. I am wondering if you think this hitch would work as it would have to be mounted on the outside of the I-beams due to tubular bumper bracketing and various other braces and supports mounted on the inside of the I-beam as well as an enclosed underbelly. It looks to me like I could access the underbelly enough to get a bolt through the I-beam. In looking at the pictures of the hitch it looks like the end brackets would need to be flipped around from the application shown to be mounted in my application. Outside to outside dimension of the vertical member of the I-beam is 68 7/8. Are the brackets available with the receiver tube manufactured in the opposite direction? Thanks for your answer in advance.

The Curt Hitch part # 13703 is designed to fit I-beam trailer frames that are from 22-72 inches in width so in that regard it would be compatible with your 2004 Jayco 291RLTS fifth wheel.

However, it will need to install on the inside of the frame though as that is how it is designed to install. If that is not going to be possible on your trailer due to the reasons you listed the only option I could recommend would be to contact a fabricator and have them make something that would fit.

To Jameson C or another expert, I have a similar situation on my travel trailer with rectangular tubing used to mount the rear bumper. This tubing is welded to the inside of the I-beam frame where I should be attaching the 13703 mounting plates. When you say to, "contact a fabricator and have them make something that would fit", are you indicating mounting plates that are basically the same as the ones provided, but with the tube portion facing inward instead of outward? These plates would then mount to the unobstructed outer face of the web of my I-beam frames and still be able to receive the cross tube of the hitch.

That could potentially work. Modifying the Curt brackets in that manner would void the hitch's warranty. You may even have a fabricator construct a whole new hitch that will work with the frame rails on your particular trailer.
