Weight Distribution Hitch for Towing a MAXX-D Dump Trailer With a Ford F-150

Updated 11/03/2026 | Published 10/30/2026

Question:

Hi, I recently purchased a 2027 MAXX-D D7X 12k dump trailer to pull with my 2020 F150 ecoboost. My plan is to use it for hauling construction debris about 15-20 miles and occasionally for firewood or some dirt/gravel. My truck is rated for a little over 10k towing but my ford hitch is only rated for 5,000lb unless I use a WDH. I planned on purchasing a WDH but after getting the trailer home realized the toolbox and A-frame bracing is in the way of most WDH bracket mounting points. The dealer I chose and the manufacturer both tell me WDH aren’t needed but I’d like to explore my options as my truck’s manual clearly states they are required. The Fastway e2 brackets could mount with the center of the bolts just at 24” but my local RV shop said they don’t do hitches on dump trailers. I’m curious if you have any options for this?

Hey John.

Based on all the information you provided, I suggest taking a look at the Blue Ox # BLU27FR as this WDH will mount anywhere from 20"-25" from the hitch ball, so your 24" requirement is met. This will also allow you to use the max weight distribution weight ratings of your vehicles hitch. However, keep in mind that with this trailer fully loaded, you exceed your weight capacity in both metrics, so I recommend against loading this to the max with your current tow vehicle.

We also have to ensure that we have mounting space for our spring bar brackets within that 20"-25" range from the hitch ball (see picture) making sure to clear the toolbox. Your 5" tongue height falls into the range of the Blue Ox hitch as well.

How much weight do you foresee yourself needed to pull?
