Enclosed Hitch Cargo Box vs Cargo Basket and Bag for Luggage

Updated 10/17/2026 | Published 10/16/2026

Question:

We take several family road trips each year, and with the third row up there's hardly any room for suitcases. Our SUV has a 2" hitch, so I'm deciding between an enclosed cargo box and a regular basket with a cargo bag. Is the hard box worth the extra money?

Hey Jennifer! For maximum protection, I'd recommend the Thule Arcos XL Enclosed Cargo Carrier # TH528KQ. Its weather-resistant hard shell helps protect your luggage from the elements, and the built-in locks are nice for some extra peace of mind when you stop along the way. You get 15.9 cubic feet of storage with a 110 lb cargo capacity.

If that extra protection isn't a major concern, or you're looking to save some money, I'd go with the Benton MoveHitch Cargo Carrier # B86VR and etrailer Cargo Bag # 988501. The bag gives you 20 cubic feet of water-resistant storage, and you can remove it to use the basket for bulkier camping gear. I'd also add the etrailer Anti-Rattle Locking Hitch Pin # e43JR to keep it secure.

Where are you headed next?

We're heading to the Smoky Mountains for fall break. I'm leaning toward the Benton since we could use it for camping gear too, not just luggage.

@Jennifer that sounds like a great trip! The Benton will give you a lot more flexibility since you can use the cargo bag for luggage on road trips and remove it when you need to haul larger camping gear. Enjoy the Smokies!
