What Size Bottle Jack Do I Need to Change a Fifth Wheel Tire
Updated 10/17/2026 | Published 10/13/2026 >
Question:
Our fifth wheel weighs around 14,000 lbs loaded and has two 7,000-lb axles. I want to carry a jack and stand for tire changes, but I'm not sure what capacity I need. Is a 6-ton jack enough, or does it need to handle the entire trailer weight?

Hey Marcus! A 6-ton jack has enough capacity for changing one tire on your setup since you aren't lifting the entire fifth wheel at once. I'd recommend the Power Mountain Tallboy Bottle Jack with Stand # PM85ZR, which includes a jack and stand each rated for 12,000 lbs. The included stand supports the raised load instead of relying on the bottle jack alone.

It's a Grand Design Solitude. We travel quite a bit, and I wanted something to keep in the storage compartment in case we have a flat on the road.
